Pumas now happy for Juarez to join Celtic as Hoops eye secret release clause

Pumas are now reportedly happy to let manager Efrain Juarez join Celtic, who could take full advantage of their former star’s secret release clause at the Mexican club.

The Bhoys once again struggled on the European stage in midweek, losing 3-1 against Midtjylland, as Martin O’Neill saw their problems in full for the first time. The interim boss has continued to distance himself from the permanent job, despite recent reports suggesting that he could yet be the next man to take the hotseat.

For now, the 73-year-old is set to remain in the dugout for Celtic’s Scottish Premiership clash against Kilmarnock this weekend, but Parkhead chiefs are continuing their search.

Recent reports have claimed that Ipswich Town’s Kieran McKenna is now open to joining the Scottish giants, but it remains to be seen whether he’d leave Portman Road in the middle of a campaign which has so far been disappointing.

Meanwhile, Nicky Hayen is also a reported candidate. The Club Brugge manager knows all about beating the top clubs in Scottish football, having smashed Rangers 9-1 on aggregate in the Champions League qualifiers earlier this season and defeated Celtic last season. Now, he could be on his way to the home dugout in Glasgow.

Once again, however, luring him away from Club Brugge will not be an easy task. Instead, the Hoops may have no choice but to turn towards former player Juarez, who has previously shared that he dreams of managing the club.

Pumas happy to let Juarez join Celtic

As reported in Mexico and relayed by Sport Witness, Pumas are now happy to let Juarez join Celtic, who could trigger a release clause that allows the 37-year-old to leave for free when a European club comes knocking.

More bad news for the Bhoys.

It would save Celtic a transfer fee and it would welcome someone who knows the standards of the club, given that Juarez played for the Bhoys between 2010 and 2012. Whether he has the right managerial experience for the role is another question, though, and the Scottish club may find that out after reportedly scheduling an interview over zoom.

The former player, who uses a 4-2-3-1 system, has taken charge of just two sides and is yet to even reach 100 games as a manager. At this point in time, it should be questioned whether Celtic can afford to take such a gamble.

Juarez’s time at Pumas hasn’t exactly been the greatest success, either. The Mexican has lost more games than he’s won and averaged just 1.3 points over 33 games in charge. It suddenly makes the club’s willingness to let him leave make all too much sense for Celtic to make their move.

For the time being, those at Celtic Park should trust O’Neill with the job until a suitable candidate emerges.

Shohei Ohtani Couldn't Wait to Try One New Thing During Dodgers' Celebration

Shohei Ohtani found a perfect way to wrap up his historic 2024 MLB season—by winning the World Series in his first year with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Ohtani was everything the Dodgers and their fans hoped he would be when they signed him to a $700 million deal last offseason. He became the first player in MLB history to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in the same season and while he was banged up in the last few games of the World Series, he did more than enough in the postseason to help lead the Dodgers to a title.

Ohtani had fun celebrating his first championship. He joined the FOX Sports postgame show moments after the game and told the crew there was one thing he was looking forward to trying for the first time—a cigar.

What a legend.

Ohtani could have an even more impressive season next year when he's able to return to pitching after not being able to take the mound this year following major elbow surgery in Sept. 2023.

Amy Jones: 'Setting the tone is a cool responsibility'

Wicketkeeper-batter impresses with century on her return to the top of the ODI order

Valkerie Baynes03-Jun-2025As Amy Jones raised her bat to celebrate reaching a long-awaited maiden international century, a broad smile spread across the face of England head coach Charlotte Edwards.Four days later, Jones couldn’t remember what Edwards had said to her after she walked off the pitch with 122 next to her name. But she could remember her coach’s smile, after setting up a resounding 108-run victory against West Indies in the first of three ODIs in Derby. It reflected a plan coming together to great effect for the team and Jones, who finally reached a landmark that had eluded her for 12 years and more than 200 games representing her country across formats.”In terms of the role suiting me, I definitely think it does,” Jones, the England Women’s wicketkeeper, beamed on the eve of Wednesday’s second ODI in Leicester. “I’ve always liked facing the new ball, the challenge of that, and then also having the chance to set the tone. That’s a really cool responsibility to have.”I remember when I moved down into the middle-order I was initially disappointed, so I guess I sort of tapped into that feeling and was happy to take that first opportunity.”It’s obviously been quite a long time coming with a couple of close ones, but a good few years ago. To get over the line, it’s a big feeling of relief, but a lot of pride and it was a very special day.”Related

Jones had opened the batting 22 times previously in ODIs, but not since the 2019 Women’s Ashes, and 18 times in T20Is, most recently during the World Cup in Australia in 2020.But in all seven of her innings this season for The Blaze in the Metro Bank One Day Cup, Jones had opened with Tammy Beaumont, the pair reprising that partnership for England brilliantly with a 222-run stand and Beaumont posting a score of 107. In her previous three games for The Blaze, Jones had scored 41, 52 and 80 after starting with 30, 35, 0 and 8.”There was a lot of learning through that, times when I got off to good starts and got out in the thirties and I guess just figuring out a good tempo through an innings,” Jones said.”Going from batting towards the end or middle of the innings, typically your tempo’s quite consistent, you get in and then you try and accelerate throughout. Opening is a bit different and there’s the challenge of navigating trickier patches throughout, so I’d say that’s probably been the biggest learning from those games.”When Lottie said I was going to be opening, it definitely gave me a lot of confidence and belief that how I go about it could be a really good match for what she wants at the top of the order. So I think from that, definitely a bit of freedom just to go out there.”Something I worked really hard at in the middle order was almost ignoring the scoreboard and just playing the ball. So I think that all still applies at the top but I guess it’s setting the tone as opposed to reacting to a different situation.”Jones has found herself in another familiar-yet-unfamiliar role, being named in a three-player leadership group for the T20I series against West Indies last month to support new captain Nat Sciver-Brunt.Jones briefly captained England in the absence of Sciver-Brunt and her predecessor, Heather Knight, during India’s last visit in 2022, and was recently part of Knight’s support crew alongside then vice-captain Sciver-Brunt and Sophie Ecclestone. For the T20Is against West Indies, Jones shared those duties with vice-captain Charlie Dean and Sophia Dunkley but made way for Kate Cross to join those two as part of a more fluid leadership group under Edwards’ tenure.”It’s a really good thing and a good way of hearing different voices, giving responsibility to different players and I guess looking to the future as well,” Jones said. “We probably haven’t had that obvious list of potential captains really.”I think there’s a lot of people that would do a great job at it, but looking a bit further on, this is definitely going to improve everyone’s leadership and confidence in that area as well, which I think is huge, the belief that you can be a leader amongst the group. Sharing that out is a great way of spreading it wide, I suppose.”Ecclestone wasn’t named in either squad to face West Indies, instead playing domestic cricket after a knee injury.Fellow left-arm spinner Linsey Smith took a five-wicket haul on ODI debut in the first game against West Indies, six and a half years since making her T20I debut, illustrating Edwards’ willingness to test the growing depth in the women’s game in this country.Similarly, seam bowler Em Arlott put in a player-of-the-match performance in just her second international match, the second T20I in Hove, some four years after she was first called up to an England squad. Both have enjoyed strong starts to the domestic season, which Edwards had said, upon replacing Jon Lewis as head coach in April, would be rewarded and expected when it came to national selection.”On the whole, across all the different disciplines, we’ve just got so much competition within the squad now, which is brilliant and it’s where everyone wants to be,” Jones said. “It will improve us as a team and as individuals too.”

"Sensational" £25m maestro who's wanted by top clubs now key target for Wolves

A “sensational” £25m midfielder has now emerged as a key target for Wolverhampton Wanderers, with a number of Europe’s top clubs in the race for his signature.

Wolves keen on new additions amid slow start

Seven games into the Premier League season, Wolves sit bottom of the table, having put in some very poor performances, with the 3-1 home defeat against newly-promoted Leeds United likely to be particularly concerning for Vitor Pereira.

Usually, a manager without a win in his first seven league games would be under serious pressure, but the board have decided to back Pereira, with the 57-year-old signing a new three-year contract back in September.

New Cunha: Wolves have a "special" 18-year-old who could rival Strand Larsen

Vitor Pereira could now have Wolverhampton Wanderers’ next Matheus Cunha at his disposal, and it’s not Jorgen Strand Larsen.

ByKelan Sarson Oct 13, 2025

Chairman Jeff Shi said: “Now is a time for stability. Vitor needs time to work with the squad, to build a chemistry with new players, and we will do everything to support him and his staff.”

One of the ways in which Shi can back his manager is by strengthening the squad in the January transfer window, and a midfielder has now emerged as a key target for the Old Gold.

That is according to a report from TEAMtalk, which states Wolves are in the race for Rangers midfielder Nicolas Raskin, but there could be stiff competition for his signature, with a number of top clubs in the Serie A and Bundesliga also keen.

Within the Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace and West Ham United have also expressed an interest in the midfielder, and there is a feeling the Scottish Premiership side could demand £20m – £25m to sanction a departure.

Raskin was open to leaving Ibrox during the summer transfer window, but he ultimately ended up staying put, given a lack of concrete bids. However, amid widespread interest in the Belgian, there may be plenty of options available in 2026.

"Sensational" Raskin could be difference-maker for Wolves

We are still at an early stage of the season, but Wolves will be very keen to avoid being dragged into another relegation battle, so it would make sense to splash the cash on a new midfielder during the January transfer window.

Moreover, there are clear indications the Rangers star could be a real difference-maker, given the impact he’s made at Ibrox ever since arriving, with former teammate Scott Arfield saying: “Nico’s first two training sessions were sensational. You could see he is built to play at a club like Rangers. I can see him playing there for years. He is captain material.”

The Liege-born maestro poses a real threat on the front foot, having chipped in with one goal and four assists in all competitions already this season, while he is also solid defensively, placing in the 98th percentile for tackles per 90 over the past year.

Raskin is a very well-rounded midfielder, and the interest from some of Europe’s top clubs speaks volumes, so it would be a real coup if Wolves were able to get a deal done.

Farhan Ahmed – a generational talent keeping it real for Notts

His impact was huge, his efforts far more than lovable

Vithushan Ehantharajah26-Apr-2025

Farhan Ahmed looks on from the field•Getty Images

It was 10 overs into Sussex’s second innings that Farhan Ahmed took the ball from the Stuart Broad End. Glint of opportunity in his eyes, dark mop of hair bouncing as he marked his run-up, he looked every bit a cartoon fish embarking on a grand adventure. You cannot get further from animated japery than an early season County Championship match, even if it is between the two surprising and flawed main protagonists of Division One so far. The cloud cover means the colours don’t pop, and, here, the white sheets covering the Trent Bridge pavilion during its renovations dull any whimsy to riff upon. Then there’s the threateningly short 50-yard boundary to our protagonists’ left, the hard place to be pushed up against by the rocks of an entirely southpaw visiting top four. Two of the rock-steadiest, Tom Haines and Daniel Hughes, were already squeezing, exchanging nine fours in a steady unbeaten 50, munching through Nottinghamshire’s first innings lead of 131.What of friends to make along the way? At this juncture, struggling. Brett Hutton, the resident warlock, peak of his powers with 4 for 53 on day one, had gone off four balls into the previous over at the end Farhan was now to occupy. With only two seamers left on the park in Fergus O’Neill – already five overs deep into his work – and Josh Tongue, a lot would be required of the 17-year-old offspinner whose cursory seven overs on day one – 1 for 19 – had been somewhat carefree. As they should be at that age.Related

Fast forward 34 overs, well into the second act of this production, and our plucky fish was not simply alive and thriving, but treacherous for his own means. Sussex were stuttering on 138 for 5, scoring curtailed, batters prised out, ahead by just seven. Farhan’s uninterrupted spell of 17 overs – 11 of them up to tea – had come to an end. But his impact had been huge, his efforts far more than lovable, but a perfect distillation of the multi-purpose benefits a spinner brings when they know exactly what needs to be done, and how they are going to do it.He did not just take the first two of Sussex’s seven Saturday wickets – Hughes caught behind, then No.3 Tom Clark trapped in front in the space of nine balls. He brought a level of control that turned captain Haseeb Hameed’s anxiety about juggling his now scarce seam options into a luxury now that he only needed to worry about the Radcliffe Road End.Able to focus on himself, O’Neil banked his first wicket of the match in his second spell, trapping Tom Alsop lbw. A high-calibre second followed nine balls after tea when sticking his right-hand out in his follow-through around the wicket for a stunning catch off a flowing Haines drive.Haines, by then, had 64, a fourth fifty-plus score in his last five innings, with a third century seemingly in the offing to make amends for his two-ball duck yesterday. A lashed cut over cover point, into the PKF Smith Cooper Stand on the short side, took him to 53 from 65 deliveries, and past 500 for the season already. He had been dropped by Joe Clarke at first slip off O’Neil on 34. And it is not hard to surmise that Haines’s keeness to crack on in the evening, which allowed the Australian to finally get his man, was because he was not getting much change from the kid at the other end. Ben Duckett, scooping low to his left at second slip, removed Ollie Carter for O’Neil’s third, by which point Sussex were five down and still six behind. That was the final dismissal during Farhan’s mammoth stint. By the time he had been given the “that’ll do for now” by Hameed, his 2 for 45 had brought Nottinghamshire back into the ascendancy. The frugality of it all – conceding only four boundaries in those first 17, and just two to the leg side when skipper John Simpson arrived to sweep firmly behind square in the offspinner’s last two overs – meant the lower order dart for runs did not really shift the dial.Farhan Ahmed in his delivery stride•Jas Ghata-Aura

Tongue, having replaced the offie, was well-rested enough to find movement with a 48-over-old Dukes to remove James Coles lbw. The more senior spinner Liam Patterson-White – even if this was his first appearance of the season to Farhan’s fourth – snuck one under Fynn Hudson-Prentice’s bat and into his stumps. Even Hutton had time to shake off cramp and a neural issue to rejoin the attack late in the day.By the time Farhan returned for two more overs at the dregs of day two, Simpson had found a valuable ally in Jack Carson, whose resolute unbeaten 21 in a stand of 28 does represent a sliver of hope. They lead by 64. A sharp turner past Simpson’s edge – the first to really go big – was a nod to what the spinner might get up to tomorrow.Make no mistake, this remains a seamer’s pitch, which is another feather in Farhan’s cap. After all, we’re at Trent Bridge in April. Even before Farhan made his appearances, the sharks of Jayden Seales and Ollie Robinson wreaked havoc. The Test duo, averages a lowly 22 at that level, are a big reason why we are the best part of three innings through this fixture inside two days. They hacked away at Nottinghamshire’s strong first innings position of 164 for 3 at the start of play – five away from parity – splitting six morning wickets between them. Nottinghamshire’s eventual grind to 300 thanks to cameos from Patterson-White (42) and Tongue (39) went some way to regaining that dominance, spitting on Robinson and Seales’ graft in the process. By the end of it all, the respective four-fors for the Englishman and West Indian came from a combined 45 overs of the 68.3 Sussex sent down. Both Robinson (from the Radcliffe Road End) and Seales (Stuart Broad End) began with eight-over stints that elicited a collapse of 5 for 43. Seales, struggling with a stomach issue on Friday, showed the benefit of a night’s rest when he shaved Jack Haynes’ edge with his first ball of day two.Once Robinson had removed Haseeb Hameed for 85 with a quality delivery that finally lured the home skipper into a misjudgment – the result of movement in, pitching full but not full enough for a push – both ends were opened. And when O’Neill and Hutton were seen off with ease, 210 for 8 spoke of shifting sands.Though the 90 more runs added kept Sussex uncertain under foot, the opening stand between Hughes and Haines was on its way to wiping the slate clean. That they haven’t got away with it is not down to some pesky kid, but an English offspinner beyond his years, marrying control and responsibility. There was nothing cartoonish about it, just a generational talent doing it for real.

Enzo Maresca explains reason for Chelsea owners' surprise dressing room visit after Blues slump to Brighton defeat

Enzo Maresca explained why Chelsea's owners visited the Blues' dressing after a humiliating loss in the Premier League against Brighton on Saturday. After the disappointing home defeat, Chelsea's co-controlling owner Behdad Eghbali, along with several club officials marched straight into the dressing room. Maresca, however, played down the incident by claiming it is a regular occurrence.

Welbeck's heroics seal three points for Brighton

Former Arsenal and Manchester United star Danny Welbeck proved to be the star of the show for the Seagulls after his brace brought his side back into the game in the second half. The hosts took the lead through Enzo Fernandez's strike in the 24th minute and the Blues held on to their lead until the 77th minute, when Welbeck scored the equaliser. Maxim De Cuyper then put Brighton in front in the 92nd minute before Welbeck completed his brace in the dying minutes of the game.

Journalist reported after the game that Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali, along with sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, plus Joe Shields and Sam Jewell, marched into the Blues dressing room after the game, which raised a few eyebrows.

'They did not say anything to the players'

Maresca, however, played down the incident, as he told reporters: "They have been inside the changing-room, like always. We have an office inside the changing-room, where after every game, we sit and we talk about the game. But they did not say anything to the players. It was nothing completely different compared to the rest of the games."

Bigger talent than Simons: Spurs in talks to sign a "£100m-plus footballer"

All summer long, Tottenham Hotspur fans have been crying out for a new number ten to help
Thomas Frank in his quest for success during his spell in the role.

James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski are the two players who shared the role in 2024/25, but the Dane will be without the duo until at least the start of 2026 through various injuries.

The hierarchy have attempted to fill such a void in the last few weeks, turning to Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze – but they ultimately missed out on both of the aforementioned talents.

However, their hunt has come to an end in recent days, landing the signature of Xavi Simons, with the Dutchman joining the Lilywhites in a £52m transfer from German side RB Leipzig.

With just a couple of days left in the window, the new boss still looks as though he wants added reinforcements this summer, subsequently targeting multiple other talents before Monday’s deadline.

Premium Tottenham Hotspur Experiences Spurs’ hunt for new signings after Simons

Savinho is a player who’s been on Spurs’ radar all throughout the current window, but their attempts to land the Manchester City star have so far been to no avail.

Despite their inability to land the Brazilian international, talks have once again been held for his services in recent days – leading to reports suggesting the player wants to move to North London.

However, he’s not the only Manchester-based player in their sights, with Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo also on their radar, according to TEAMtalk.

Their report claims that Frank’s side have made an approach to the Red Devils to discuss a potential deal for the 20-year-old midfielder, who rose through the academy at Old Trafford.

It also states the player himself would be keen on a temporary move to join the Lilywhites before the deadline, after he stated his desire to gain more game time away from Ruben Amorim’s side.

Why Mainoo is a bigger talent than Simons

The deal to land Simons this week has generated huge excitement amongst the Spurs fanbase – understandably so given his tally of 18 combined goals and assists in the Bundesliga last season.

RB Leipzig'sXaviSimonsreacts after the match

£52m is an excellent price for the 22-year-old, having huge potential to develop into a world-class talent under Frank’s guidance – especially if he continues on his current trajectory.

Given the injury situation in such a position, it was vital that the manager and the board secure the signature of a new number ten – with Simons having the chance to demonstrate his quality in the Premier League this season.

However, the hierarchy can’t rest on their laurels, subsequently needing further additions to help Frank in his quest for success during his spell in North London.

A deal for Mainoo would provide added quality and talent in the midfield department – arguably being a bigger talent than the Dutchman when delving into his stats from 2024/25.

The 20-year-old, who’s been described by United writer Alex Turk as a future “£100m-plus footballer”, ranked in the 84th percentile of all players in the Premier League for tackle success rate (60%) whilst winning 1.6 tackles per 90.

Such numbers could provide a needed presence at the heart of the side for Frank – but his numbers in possession would also offer the boss a new dimension in tight areas.

The Englishman ranked in the 84th percentile for take-ons completed per 90 (1.3) also notching 0.6 carries into the opposition box per 90 – which places him in the top 19% of stars in England’s top-flight.

The youngster would be able to operate in a perfect box-to-box position for the Lilywhites – which could see him dictate the play and often provide Simons with chances in forward areas.

Despite his tender age, Mainoo has already racked up 50 appearances in the Premier League, having the potential to develop into a generational talent if given the game time under Frank.

Such a move would be an excellent coup for Spurs, adding further depth and quality to their midfield department – following in the footsteps of Simons and Joao Palhinha this summer.

If the pair can operate together in North London, there’s no reason why Frank can’t help the side battle for a spot in the Champions League once again come the end of the 2025/26 season.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Zendejas's status with the USMNT has come under question since Mauricio Pochettino arrived as manager almost a year ago.  The Club America winger, who has won league titles in four of the last five years, only received one call-up from the Argentine manager, and it came under his first camp.

Zendejas, for his part, was diplomatic when asked about it during the MLS All-Star break.

"That's his decision for him to make, and I respect it 100 percent," he said. "What I can do is my job, you know, I got to perform on the field, and then hopefully that call up will come."
