Arsenal "ready to pay" asking price for Prem star who Arteta and Berta want

Arsenal are “ready to pay” the price needed to sign a Premier League star who manager Mikel Arteta and Andrea Berta both want at the Emirates, according to reliable journalist David Ornstein.

Arsenal face PSG in all-important Champions League semi-final

With no games to worry about this weekend, Arsenal are currently anticipating their most important game of the season so far – a blockbuster Champions League semi-final first leg clash against Ligue 1 champions PSG.

Arsenal demand major Thomas Partey concession in talks over new deal

The Ghanaian has arguably enjoyed his best campaign at Arsenal.

Arsenal blew away Real Madrid in the last round, knocking Carlo Ancelotti’s 15-time European champions out in the quarter-finals via a 5-1 aggregate scoreline, and they’ll take plenty of encouragement from what was a truly dominant display over two legs against one of the continent’s most feared sides.

Luis Enrique’s side pose an equally tough test, if not more so, having enjoyed an excellent Champions League campaign to date whilst remaining unbeaten in Ligue 1.

PSG are the media’s favourites to win this year’s Champions League, but you can never discount an Arsenal side absolutely brimming with quality.

Arsenal's transfer plans for this summer

Away from the pitch, Berta and co are already planning for next season by identifying the club’s preferred summer signings. According to some reports, Arsenal want to reinforce the goalkeeping department, full-back area and in midfield, whilst also potentially signing a new left-winger, right-winger and striker (GiveMeSport).

A new centre-back to rotate with Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba isn’t out of the question either, with Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen reliably believed to be a top target for the Gunners.

Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen

Arsenal have held talks with Huijsen’s representatives ahead of the summer window, according to multiple media sources, after his excellent debut season in the Premier League where he’s seriously impressed under Andoni Iraola.

The 20-year-old, who actually scored against north London rivals Tottenham earlier this season, will be allowed to leave for £50 million – the value of his release clause.

Arsenal "ready to pay" release clause for Dean Huijsen

Now, as per Ornstein in a Q&A for The Athletic, Arsenal are “ready to pay” Huijsen’s release clause after negotiating with his camp recently. It is also believed that Arteta and Berta are both huge fans of the ex-Serie A centre-back, but they still face stiff competition from rivals.

“It is strong and they remain in contention,” said Ornstein on Arsenal’s interest in Huijsen.

“They are among the clubs (with Chelsea, Liverpool, Newcastle and Tottenham) who have met his representatives, with Mikel Arteta and Andrea Berta keen to sign the Spain international. Whether or not Arsenal win the race is unclear because it’s still open and I’m not aware of a front-runner between them, Chelsea and Liverpool to date. Real Madrid has always carried huge appeal to Huijsen, we hear, but so far they haven’t moved on this situation, and I’m sure he is philosophical about that. Previously, I think Kiwior exiting Arsenal was highly possible… that might be less certain following his recent rise to prominence.

“Either way, Huijsen would play a lot of football at Arsenal, and they can now show him many examples of how, under Arteta, players have developed extremely well and become top-level talents. Now, this doesn’t mean he will opt for them; there are pros and cons to each of the suitors, all of whom are ready to pay the release clause. Huijsen and Bournemouth want it sorted sooner rather than later. Let’s see what he decides.”

The Spain international was handed his first senior caps in a very competitive national team as well this season, highlighting just how well he’s performed, and Huijsen now looks set to be one of this summer’s most in-demand defenders.

ByKelan Sarson Mar 30, 2025

They could look to raid the Championship, similar to how Ipswich Town operated last summer, with a move for Sunderland centre-back Daniel Ballard on the cards.

January target Jimmy Dunne from Queens Park Rangers remains of interest to the Blades, whereas Norwich City attacker Borja Sainz is another transfer target for Sheffield United.

However, away from the Championship, another defensive option is believed to be on the Blades’ radar.

Sheffield United in the lead for defender Terry Yegbe

According to reports from Sweden, relayed by Sport Witness, Sheffield United are in the race to sign Elfsborg defender Terry Yegbe. There were claims that Brighton & Hove Albion were about to sign Yegbe for around €5.4m (£4.5m), however, it is stated that Elfsborg would want up to €6.98m (£5.9m).

It is added that Sheffield United are still one of three clubs leading the race to sign Yegbe alongside Crystal Palace and Fulham.

The 24-year-old moved to Elfsborg in February 2024 from Finish side SJK Seinajoki for €550,000 and is under contract until 2028. Over the last 12 months, Yegbe, who stands at 6 foot 4, has made 44 appearances for his current employers, scoring three goals and even playing in the Europa League.

A centre-back who can also play as a left-back, Yegbe has also represented Ghana at international level and, over the last 365 days, ranks in the 99th percentile for clearances when compared to other centre-backs. [FbRef]

By the looks of things, a move to Yorkshire for Yegbe could be one to keep an eye on, especially if the Blades win promotion over the coming weeks.

Auction stats: Curran and Green go past Morris; Brook's record; and a debutant from Ireland

Elsewhere, Unadkat and Pandey joined their seventh IPL teams, while Wiese kept the Associate flag flying

Sampath Bandarupalli24-Dec-2022Dealing in crores
A sum total of INR 167 crore was spent by the ten franchises for signing 80 players in the 87 available slots for IPL 2023. The aggregate of INR 167 crore is the highest spent in an IPL mini-auction, surpassing the INR 145.3 crore in 2021. That this was the first mini-auction to feature ten teams contributed to the sum.

Sunrisers Hyderabad were the most active team, having entered the auction with the biggest purse of INR 42.25 crore. They spent INR 35.7 crore on 13 players. Kolkata Knight Riders were on the other side of the spectrum, using INR 5.4 crore out of their purse of INR 7.05 crore for eight players.Only three teams did not reach their squad limit of 25 players. Mumbai Indians ended up with 24, and Punjab Kings and Knight Riders with 22 each. Kings were the only team that did not reach the limit of eight overseas players, signing seven in all.The record-breakers
Chris Morris held the record of being the most expensive player in the history of the IPL auction, having earned an INR 16.25 crore bid from Rajasthan Royals in 2021. But the figure was breached twice in 15 minutes on Friday afternoon in Kochi.ESPNcricinfo LtdKings spent INR 18.5 crore on Sam Curran to set a new record. Mumbai Indians, the losing bidders on Curran, shelled out INR 17.5 crore for Cameron Green. Not long later, Ben Stokes was signed for INR 16.25 crore by Chennai Super Kings to equal Morris’ fee from the 2021 auction.Banking on youth
The franchises spent big on the young players, hinting that they would look to groom them into long-term options. Three of the five most expensive picks in the auction were 25 or younger – Curran (INR 18.5 cr), Green (INR 17.5 cr) and Harry Brook (INR 13.25 cr). Green and Brook have not featured in the league before.

Only two of the ten INR 13-plus crore buys at previous auctions were 25 or younger – Ishan Kishan (INR 15.25 crore in 2022 at the age of 23) and Jhye Richardson (INR 14 crore in 2021 at 24). As many as 27 players sold in this auction were younger than 25, and a total of INR 71.1 crore was spent on them.Brook enters IPL on a high
Brook bagged a whopping INR 13.25 crore from Sunrisers for his maiden IPL contract. The England International is now the most expensive overseas batter in the history of IPL auctions. He broke the record of Chris Lynn, who was signed for INR 9.6 crore in 2018 by the Knight Riders. The price Brook fetched was also the second-highest for a specialist batter in the IPL auction, behind Yuvraj Singh’s INR 16 crore.

Yuvraj, a designated allrounder, was registered as a batter for the 2015 auction when he earned the big bid from Delhi Daredevils. Brook is also Sunrisers’ most expensive player. Sunrisers, in fact, had spent over INR 10 crore on only two players previously – INR 11 crore on Manish Pandey in 2018 and INR 10.75 crore on Nicholas Pooran in 2022.Ireland’s first and Zimbabwe’s return
Josh Little was signed for INR 4.4 crore by Gujarat Titans – 8.8 times his base price of INR 50 lakh. He became the first Ireland player to earn an IPL contract. In another first, David Wiese became the first Namibia player to be picked at the IPL auction.Wiese was earlier part of the IPL as a South Africa player, but the 2023 season will be his first in the league since his switch to Namibia. He is now in a small list of IPL players from Associate nations – Netherlands’ Ryan ten Doeschate (Knight Riders in 2011 and 2014), UAE’s Chirag Suri (Gujarat Lions, 2017), Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan (Sunrisers, 2017) and Mohammad Nabi (Sunrisers, 2017), and Nepal’s Sandeep Lamichhane (Daredevils, 2018).Sikandar Raza, who enjoyed success in T20Is this year – with seven player-of-the-match awards, was signed by Kings for his base price of INR 50 lakh. He is only the third Zimbabwe player to fetch a bid at an IPL auction after Tatenda Taibu and Brendan Taylor.Seventh franchise for Pandey and Unadkat
Manish Pandey was signed for INR 2.4 crore by Delhi Capitals, which will be his seventh IPL franchise. Lucknow Supergiants, similarly, will be the seventh IPL team for Jaydev Unadkat, whom they signed for INR 50 lakh.

No Indian player has played for more than six franchises before Pandey and Unadkat. Only one player in the history of the IPL has represented more franchises than this duo – Aaron Finch (9). The 2023 auction was the 11th time Unadkat went into an auction and got sold, the most by any player.

FSG could see £75m bid accepted to sign Liverpool their best LW since Mane

The 2025/26 campaign has deepened and we now have a clear picture of how things are going. For Liverpool, improvements are needed across the board.

Arne Slot has cut a dismayed figure over the past several months, unable to grasp how his high-flying squad have been grounded so miserably. A run of six defeats from seven in the Premier League before the weekend win over West Ham United has cast doubt over his tenure.

With the January transfer window less than a month away, FSG are attentive to potential opportunities, and it’s no secret that Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo is at the top of the Merseysiders’ Christmas list.

Liverpool's winter transfer plans

While the thought of activating Semenyo’s £65m release clause next month is tempting, he is not the only talented (and versatile) winger on the market.

And Liverpool are not the only club looking to seal his signature. Semenyo is also on Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur’s radar, with the latter “intensifying their interest”, according to Sky Sports.

But Liverpool have earmarked a number of potential signings, and Caught Offside have revealed that they have been boosted by Real Madrid’s transfer-listing of rogue winger Rodrygo for around €85m (£75m), whose fortunes at the Santiago Bernabeu have been sour for a while now, and is surely set for an exit in 2026.

Real Madrid's Rodrygo looks on

Rodrygo has not been in good form for Los Blancos this season or last, but there remains a world-class talent in there, and he could finally reach his potential in a leading role at Liverpool.

Why Liverpool want Rodrygo

Rodrygo is one of the most talented forwards in the world. Rodrygo has also gone 30 La Liga matches without a goal.

It’s clear that he needs to leave Real Madrid and restore his reputation as a “world-class superstar”, as he has been called in the past by former teammate Luka Modric. This is a versatile and multi-faceted forward who has proved himself on the biggest stages time and time again.

Cody Gakpo is a consistent force down the left for Liverpool, but he’s not Sadio Mane, who was one of the best players in the world when in his prime. Now, Slot could land such a player in Rodrygo, who is out of sorts under Xabi Alonso’s wing but still, even at an ebb tide, ranks among the top 14% of positional peers for shot-creating actions, the top 6% for progressive carries and the top 10% for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref.

The Brazil international hasn’t actually played that much football on the left flank, but that is his preferred position. Right-footed, he is at his most prolific when cutting inside and striking on goal, all the while retaining a creative flair that sets him apart from so many other talented wingers.

Mane was also a versatile and dynamic forward, devastating in the final third. Now 33 and playing in Saudi Arabia, Liverpool have sorely missed their one-time talisman’s presence, accentuated by the sale of Luis Diaz this summer, who was never quite on his predecessor’s level.

Liverpool’s data analysts are among the finest in the game. They will know to overlook Rodrygo’s woes in recent times and look at the wider picture. For example, he scored only five goals in La Liga last season, but Sofascore show that he missed only one big chance, emphasising the kind of clinical, Mane-like returns Slot would receive.

Big boots to fill, but the South American is one of the most accomplished wingers in the game,

Rodrygo is still young – the same age, in fact, as Mane when the Senegalese completed his move to Merseyside.

The fact he has accomplished so much already is a testament to his quality and will to win. Liverpool could do with a bit of that, and if they bring such a complete and dangerous player to Anfield, it might prove to be the catalyst for sustained change.

Ex-CEO convinced star will “go to Tottenham” in statement signing for Frank

Tottenham Hotspur have made a decent start to the campaign under Thomas Frank and could now be set to make a play for one of the world’s most renowned attackers to bolster their forward line, according to ex-Everton CEO Keith Wyness.

Admittedly, striking a balance has proved tricky for Spurs this season when it comes to maintaining Premier League consistency. Five victories, three losses and three draws have led to a respectable return now that the international break is here.

Still, there is an acknowledgment that Tottenham are struggling to put together free-flowing attacking moves, as evidenced by the fact they have kept the ball for a modest 53.7% of the time in top-flight action.

In attack, Randal Kolo Muani’s struggles and Dominic Solanke’s injury problems have left Frank without a prolific goalscorer to rely on, with Joao Palhinha, Richarlison, and Brennan Johnson tied as their best contributors on four strikes apiece.

Wales international Johnson divides some segments of the Spurs support and doesn’t always set the heather alight, though his knack of scoring crucial goals is something to take real encouragement from.

Regardless, Athletic correspondent Jack Pitt-Brooke told the BBC that he believes the former Nottingham Forest man is stuck between a rock and a hard place in North London.

With that in mind, Spurs could well now turn to a high-profile alternative to bolster the wide areas, per Wyness.

Wyness: Tottenham could sign Real Madrid star Rodrygo

According to the former Premier League official, in conversation with Football Insider, Tottenham could make a move for Real Madrid winger Rodrygo despite Liverpool also being in the hunt to sign the Brazil international.

Wyness even moots the possibility of a sensational Liverpool swap deal involving Florian Wirtz after hearing ‘whispers’, but believes that, if any Premier League side are going to win the race, then Spurs are most likely and will pay the money required.

This campaign, Rodrygo has completed ten dribbles on league duty and also directed five of his ten shots on target, proving that he is a livewire despite having to contend with premium talent such as Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Jr.

At 24 years of age, it is suspected that he may consider a move to the Premier League after falling out of contention as an automatic starter, and Spurs may be at the front of the queue given he would likely step straight in as a key member of their squad.

Cubs Pitcher Kyle Hendricks Heading to Angels on One-Year Deal, per Report

Chicago Cubs pitcher Kyle Hendricks is headed to the Los Angeles Angels on a one-year deal, 670's The Score's Bruce Levine reported. MLB Network's Jon Heyman is reporting the deal is worth around $3 million.

Hendricks was the last remaining player from the Cubs' 2016 World Series-winning team. It's the end of an era officially in Chicago.

The 34-year-old is coming off a .250 winning percentage in 2024, which is the worst in his career. He posted a career-high 5.92 ERA. He pitched 130.2 innings resulting in 147 hits, 88 runs, 86 earned runs and 87 strikeouts.

It was expected that Hendricks had played his final game with Chicago on Sept. 28 after playing all of his 11 MLB seasons there. The crowd at Wrigley Field gave him a standing ovation and celebrated one of the star pitchers from their team's legendary 2016 World Series run.
