FIFA released its latest Women's World Ranking, showing the United States maintaining their top position despite a concerning 2-1 home defeat to Brazil in April. The gap between the Americans and their closest challengers has narrowed significantly, with Spain (second) and Germany (third) applying intense pressure after winning all their matches since the previous ranking update. Brazil's victory over the Emma Hayes-coached U.S. squad has propelled the South Americans to fourth place, representing a substantial four-position climb in the rankings.

South American women's football has demonstrated remarkable progress, with both Brazil and Argentina securing statement victories against established powers. While Brazil defeated the top-ranked Americans, Argentina's victory over Canada contributed to the dropping one position to eighth. These results represent a significant development in the global women's game, where North American and European nations have traditionally monopolized the upper echelons of the rankings. Meanwhile, England (fifth, down one) and Sweden (sixth) maintain their positions in the top six, while Japan have also experienced setbacks against South American opposition.

Shortly after United's 1-0 Europa League final defeat to Spurs, Fernandes said he will stay with the club until they tell him "it's time to go". That has led to speculation he could be heading for pastures new as the Red Devils try to offload some of their players this summer to fund their warchest. But, head coach Ruben Amorim is desperate for him to stay, so an interesting off-season period lies ahead.

Fernandes' United will round off a dreadful season when they host Champions League-chasing Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday in the Premier League.

Newcastle want £60m ace who’s scored more than Bruno and Tonali in 2024/25

Newcastle United are eyeing a move for a “sensational” Premier League midfielder in the summer transfer window, who has scored more goals than Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali combined this season.

Latest Newcastle news

The Magpies face a massive game at home to Nottingham Forest on Sunday afternoon, in a match that feels so important in the battle for Champions League football between now and May.

Newcastle are six points behind Nuno Espirito Santo’s side heading into the weekend action, highlighting the importance of Eddie Howe’s side picking up a win, especially after last weekend’s disappointing 4-0 defeat away to Manchester City.

Whatever happens in the coming months, a productive summer window is needed at St James’ Park, with a new centre-back needing to come in. Bournemouth ace Dean Huijsen has been linked with a move to the Magpies, having made 19 league appearances this season, excelling alongside Illia Zabarnyi.

Another Cherries player, Marcus Tavernier, has also been mentioned as a target for Newcastle, as Paul Mitchell also looks to strengthen the wide attacking options at Howe’s disposal, particularly after the exit of Miguel Almiron.

Newcastle interested in £60m midfielder

According to a new report from The Telegraph, Newcastle are eyeing a move for Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White at the end of the 2024/25 season.

The £60m-valued Englishman is described as one of a number of names who have been “discussed at various points”, along with the likes of Johan Bakayoko, Antoine Semenyo, Huijsen, Jonathan David, Nicolas Kuhn and Tyler Dibling.

Morgan Gibbs-White for Nottingham Forest.

Gibbs-White stands out as a great option for Newcastle to sign this summer, having become such an influential for a Forest team that has been excellent throughout the campaign. Magpies supporters will just hope his brilliance isn’t on show this weekend at St James’ Park.

The 25-year-old has scored five goals in the Premier League this season, which is more than Bruno Guimaraes (two) and Sandro Tonali (one) combined, and he has the same number of assists, too, showing that he can both score and create, being called “sensational” by journalist Josh Bunting.

Gibbs-White has the box-to-box energy that Bruno, Tonali and Joelinton provide, which will surely appeal to Howe, and he would add to the homegrown quota within Newcastle’s squad, acting as an added bonus.

The Forest star is also still a relatively young player who can reach higher levels in the coming years, especially if he is suddenly playing alongside superior players, with all due respect to Forest.

Worth more than Armstrong: West Brom have struck gold with star who cost £0

West Bromwich Albion supporters will be hoping for a return to winning ways this coming weekend in the Championship when second-tier underdogs Oxford United travel to the Hawthorns.

Whilst a new appointment for the U’s has worked visible wonders – with Gary Rowett catapulting Oxford up to 16th since taking over on Boxing Day – Tony Mowbray’s appointment towards the start of 2025 hasn’t quite been as smooth with just one league victory picked up in February.

Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray.

The 61-year-old is already testing the Baggies masses, with their grip on a final playoff spot suddenly looking weaker, but he does have the firepower of Adam Armstrong to now fall back on to try and put together a positive patch of form.

Armstrong's EFL heroics

The deadline day pick up of Armstrong on loan from Southampton was arguably the most jaw-dropping deal that took place in the second tier at the death, considering the 28-year-old’s previous explosive form in the EFL’s elite league.

After all, without the former Blackburn Rovers striker’s heroics last campaign, the Saints might well have come up short in the promotion race, with Armstrong firing home a potent 24 strikes to play a huge part in his parent side leaping back up to the Premier League.

Alongside these glittering numbers on the South Coast, Armstrong and Mowbray have also worked together to devastating effect in the past at Ewood Park, with all of the slick attacker’s 64 strikes for the Riversiders coming when he was positioned at the helm.

Therefore, it would have been a no-brainer decision to get him in through the door, as Armstrong already has one goal next to his name from three Baggies appearances, although a couple of blanks fired across West Brom’s recent dip in form will worry some.

Still, there will be an expectation that the 28-year-old can conjure up his Blackburn best in time, with the once £15m forward licking his lips at the prospect of working alongside this assist king in the West Midlands, who is now worth more than his past price-tag.

The West Brom star who's worth more than Armstrong

Mowbray would have been glad he had this star at his immediate disposal when arriving back onto the scene, considering 12-goal ace Josh Maja remains sidelined through injury.

Luckily, even as transfer rumours kicked into gear on deadline day, homegrown winger Tom Fellows remained at the Hawthorns, with the 21-year-old potentially the perfect player to complement Armstrong’s deadliness.

Looking at the table above, it’s clear to see why a number of Premier League outfits were keeping a close eye on the Solihull-born winger during the winter window, with a hefty total of 11 assists coming his way from 32 Championship contests, despite only averaging a low 27.7 touches per match.

When he was still fit, Maja was in dreamland working alongside the Solihull-born sensation, knowing that Fellows only needed a moment’s notice to fashion him a chance that was then regularly put away.

Therefore, he could be an ideal partner for Armstrong to recapture his goalscoring mojo, with the Baggies breathing a big sigh of relief that their £20m-rated man didn’t up and leave for Everton. Equally, that £20m valuation places him ahead of Armstrong, who is deemed to be worth £13m, according to Transfermarkt.

They will likely have to fend off more interest coming their way, especially if Fellows’ ongoing goals and assists see promotion become a reality, but in the short-term, the Toffees target and Armstrong could really spark up an exciting connection.

Having cost the club nothing after coming through the Baggies academy, Fellows’ rise will be even more of a joy to behold for supporters at the Hawthorns, with a hope the “unbelievable” ace – as he has been labelled by fellow teammate Karlan Grant – can guide Mowbray’s men up a division despite their sometimes inconsistent displays.

Andre Russell 'was expecting to be thrown under the bus'

Though his international future is uncertain, allrounder wants “to win another World Cup – or two more – for West Indies”

Why they said it: ‘I know this was coming but am gonna stay quiet!’

Andre Russell still has ambitions of playing international cricket, and wants to win “another World Cup – or two more – for West Indies”.Russell has not played for West Indies since the T20 World Cup in November 2021. Last week, he responded to head coach Phil Simmons’ statement that he would not be “begging” players to be available for West Indies, writing in a since-deleted Instagram post: “I know this was coming but am gonna stay quiet!!!” With four “angry” emojis thrown in.Related

'I know this was coming' – Russell responds to Simmons

Russell, who is currently in England playing for Manchester Originals in The Hundred, was asked about his position by Daren Sammy, the former West Indies captain, during ‘ build-up to their game against Welsh Fire on Tuesday night.”I’m going to be quiet, because at the end of the day, we had a discussion, and the discussion was very clear,” Russell responded. “So now, making me look bad, throwing me under the bus… I was expecting it. I’m going to stay quiet, Daren, to be honest.”But when Sammy asked if he still wanted to play for the West Indies, Russell was emphatic in his assertion.”Of course, of course. The maroon is all over,” he said. “Honestly, I have two franchise hundreds and I wish those hundreds were actually playing for West Indies. I don’t regret saying this just now. I really enjoyed playing for Jamaica Tallawahs but those two hundreds, it would be more special coming in international cricket.”I always want to play and give back. But, at the end of the day, if we are not agreeing on certain terms, you terms is my terms [sic], and they have to respect my terms as well. At the end of the day, it is what it is. We have families and we have to make sure that we give our best opportunity while we have one career.”It’s not like I can start over again. I’m 34 and I want to win another World Cup – or two more – for West Indies because, at the end of the day, I’m here now, and I’m just taking it day by day.”Russell will leave The Hundred next week to play in the CPL for Trinbago Knight Riders, and Desmond Haynes, West Indies’ lead selector, has suggested that performances in that tournament would be a major factor in World Cup selection.”If there is a competition that is run by the West Indies [and] somebody is playing well, I think his name should really come up for selection,” he said last week.

Australia look to test their T20 limits in Commonwealth Games, World Cup double bid

Ash Gardner: “We are really confident of being able to set any type of score and chase any down”

Australia will look to push their boundaries in the T20 game with the format dominating the schedule over the next eight months, starting with the historic Commonwealth Games appearance at the end of July then building towards the defence of their T20 World Cup in South Africa in February 2023.The team, under new interim head coach Shelley Nitschke following Matthew Mott’s departure for the England men’s white-ball job, get back on the road next week when they head to Ireland for a tri-series involving the hosts and Pakistan which will provide preparation for the Games in Birmingham. While there has been significant change in the coaching staff – Ben Sawyer has also moved to coach New Zealand – the playing group remains the same as the one which secured the ODI World Cup in New Zealand. Australia’s dominant performances in that competition, where they went unbeaten and capped it off by scoring 356 for 5 in the final against England, were another example of how they have pushed themselves to new levels and it’s something they want to continue.Related

“We’ve certainly spoken about it,” allrounder Ashleigh Gardner told ESPNcricinfo. “We haven’t really come to conclusions on what that total is that we are looking at, but I think 160 in most games, five or six years ago, would win you pretty much every match, where now because the women’s game has grown so much, 160 is a good total but it’s also chaseable.”I think we are probably looking at that as a minimum then if we try to push the boat out for 180 and be really clear how we want to chase those totals as well. With the side we have, we are really confident of being able to set any type of score and chase any down.”Shelley Nitschke has taken over the head coach role from Matthew Mott, but Australia’s overall philosophy is unlikely to change too much•Getty Images

Since January 2018, Australia have an average scoring rate of 8.37 when batting first in T20Is (which for a full 20 overs would equate to 167) while overall their figure is 7.90 runs per over. They twice scored 226 in that period (against England and Sri Lanka) and in the last T20 World Cup final they made 184 for 4 against India, but perhaps just as significant was their chase in the first Ashes T20I against England in January when they hunted down 170 with three overs to spare.”It’s something we have spoken about as a group and also within our skill groups as well, in terms of how do we get that little bit better and push the boundaries that little bit more than we have in the past,” captain Meg Lanning said. “We have got a couple of things we have been working on both as a team and individually as well.”It is going to look and feel slightly different with Shell in charge as opposed to Motty. But both [have] similar messaging in terms of how we want to play the game, take the game on, we certainly want to go out there and be aggressive and play with a lot of freedom.”On a personal level, Gardner is looking to tailor her game to the big challenges ahead which is two T20 prizes and the need to rejuvenate Sydney Sixers in the WBBL after missing the finals for the last three seasons.”Within in the Australia set-up it’s more like an enforcer role, whether it’s late in the innings, or to break open the game, or put the icing on it,” she said. “How I execute it each game will be different with the situation, but it’s about just having a really clear and simple mindset in those roles. They are quite challenging at times because people expect a lot of you to score boundaries as soon as you get out there.”The squad has had two training camps in Brisbane leading into heading overseas which has been a chance for everyone to settle in under Nitschke’s watch. A permanent appointment will not be made until later in the year although she remains the favourite.”I know the type of people who will probably apply for the job. Many coaches would want to be associated with our team because of how successful we’ve been and the players in there,” Gardner said. “Shell’s a great candidate as well, I’m really excited for her over this next little period, just being able to be the head coach with no real pressure of those job interviews and things like that. Hopefully we can put on some good displays of cricket for her and showcase what kind of coach she is.”And there’s the chance for a bit of history. “I know [the Commonwealth Games] is not something anyone thought they’d probably ever be involved in,” she said. “It’s going to be quite a cool experience to go over there and be part of Team Australia, and it not just be the cricket world but the whole sporting nation.”
