Paul Collingwood sees Durham through the dark times

With signs of a Durham revival, Paul Collingwood is again reluctant to call time on a first-class career that began deep in the last century

At 42 years old, Paul Collingwood knows that, sooner or later, he will have to face the inevitable and decide that a playing career in cricket that began in the last century really is over. With the end of his 24th season looming into view, that decision might not be far away. He was going to call it a day this time last year but changed his mind – for a second time. Don’t be surprised if he puts it off again. The knowledge that not being on the field will leave an aching void is still there. But this time there is more to the dilemma than whether he can live without playing the game.Durham are through to the Vitality Blast quarter-finals, in which they face Sussex at Chester-le-Street on Friday evening. After a thumping win over Glamorgan in Cardiff, they have a chance – an outside one, but a chance nonetheless – of returning to Division One in the Championship.Stokes boost for Durham

Ben Stokes has been added to Durham’s squad to face Sussex on Friday, 24 hours after being made unavailable by England. Stokes was initially withdrawn because of a minor knee injury sustained in the third Test against India, but will now be able to play as a batsman only in the quarter-final after being re-assessed by England’s medical team.

After the bleakest period in the club’s history as a first-class county, when the need for a financial bale-out from the ECB nearly two years ago came with relegation and point deductions attached as a “deterrent” to others, there are glimmers of hope.”It feels exciting again, it’s not all doom and gloom any more and it hasn’t felt like that for quite a while,” he said. “There have been times since the sanctions were put on us that I’ve talked with Jon Lewis [Durham’s head coach] and it felt like after all the hard work that had been done we were back to square one, that we had taken the biggest hit we possibly could have.”People looked at the relegation and the points deduction and talked about it as a two-year penalty but when you factor in the players who left, top players like [Mark] Stoneman, [Scott] Borthwick and [Keaton] Jennings, it is more like five or six years because you’ve then got to bring new players through.”But we’ve got a new chief exec now in Tim Bostock who is trying to do things differently and I’ve never known a chairman with more passion than Beefy [Ian Botham].”Financial pressures also seem to have lifted slightly. Axar Patel, an Indian spin-bowling allrounder, has signed for the last six Championship games and Alex Lees, released by Yorkshire after a long run of failure, will seek faith and form in the north-east.”The great thing is we are able to recruit again,” Collingwood said. “To be able to afford to bring in players like Patel and Lees for the rest of the season in the Championship is huge for the club.”We think we’ve got a chance to do something special in Championship. There is light at the end of the tunnel now and, you know, I feel like I want to be part of it.”The improvement in Durham’s T20 form has been startling. After just three wins in 14 last season, which would have put them bottom of the North Division irrespective of the four-points deduction imposed as part of the ECB package of penalties, nine victories this season put them second to Worcestershire only on net run rate.Tom Latham, a New Zealand batsman without huge pedigree as a Twenty20 cricketer, had a strong season as captain and opening batsman and Imran Tahir contributed to several victories.”But generally we are a team without many big names,” Collingwood said. “We went on a little road trip early on in the competition where we won back-to-back games at Edgbaston and Nottingham, games which feel like beating Man U at Old Trafford in football parlance. That gave us a lot of confidence.”We have been almost workmanlike, really. We’ve developed a kind of strategy, especially at the Riverside where the playing area is so wide and big scores are harder to get, of essentially trying to outrun the opposition.”That can be quite hard for a 42-year-old but it has worked for us and hopefully it does again on Friday night.”As for the make-your-mind-up time that he knows he cannot put off for much longer, he remains open-minded.”To be fair to the club, a decision will have to be made pretty soon if there is one to be made but as yet I really don’t know,” he said. “I’ve had a bit of an Achilles problem this year but it did not stop me playing four T20s in six days the other week. I’m still enjoying playing and I still feel I have something to offer.Coaching opportunities are already offering him other alternatives.”I’ve loved every minute of my coaching work with England and we will have to see what opportunities arise but I’ve no God-given right to walk into a job with the ECB.”Honestly, we’ll just have to wait and see. I have not made a decision as yet and there has been no pressure for me to do so. Until I have to make a final decision I’m just putting every effort into winning games for Durham, starting on Friday night.”

Siraj's maiden 10-for gives India A dramatic win

My job is to challenge the India A and U-19 teams – Dravid

South Africa A wicketkeeper-batsman Rudi Second wore down India A’s attack for the second time in the game and threatened to hold them off to a draw amid fading light at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. But Mohammed Siraj’s maiden first-class ten-wicket haul sewed up the hosts’ thrilling innings victory with 1.1 overs remaining on the final day.Yuzvendra Chahal, who was playing his first red-ball match since the Ranji Trophy quarter-final against Jharkhand in 2016, bowled as many as nine front-foot no-balls in the game and struggled for rhythm, but he struck when it mattered, to nab Second and leave him six short of a hundred again.”Chahal has had a lot of success in white-ball cricket,” India A coach Rahul Dravid said after the win. “Even for us, I have been seeing from two-and-half years, when he first came to Australia, he wasn’t considered a red-ball player as such. But we wanted to give him opportunity to showcase how he does in red-ball cricket. It’s about what he can do in red-ball cricket and that’s really what A team is about. We are here to supplement and do what is best to make the national team stronger. We want to create good options for India team. Chahal, they [selectors] were very keen to know how he performs in red-ball cricket. The more he plays red-ball cricket, the more experience he gets.”When the last hour began, South Africa A were 286 for 7 in 115 overs, still facing a deficit of 52. Soon, Chahal trapped Second with a slider to break the game open for India A. Malusi Siboto, Beuran Hendricks and No. 11 Duanne Olivier ate up 93 balls collectively and ticked down the overs, defending resolutely. However, Siraj, who had set the game up for India, fittingly returned to provide the coup de grace.”Maturity is one thing [that stands out about Siraj],” Dravid said. The last three four-day games, in England and here has been terrific. To get 26 wickets in the last three games is terrific.”He is someone who has played very less first-class matches. He hasn’t been really part of the system as he hasn’t played much junior cricket. So he is learning all the time. So even in white-ball cricket I won’t be too harsh on him too quickly because he hasn’t played that much, maybe a little bit of IPL, he had one good season and then he was in and out. It’s been great to give him the chance to perform. He has been bowling in much better areas and he has grown better physically.”Such a tense finish did not appear as likely in the morning, when Vidarbha’s Rajneesh Gurbani had overnight batsman Zubayr Hamza jabbing a catch behind for 63. At that point, South Africa A were 121 for 5. The overnight rains in Bengaluru had juiced up a pitch that already provided seam movement and variable bounce to the bowlers. Siraj, Nitin Saini and Gurbani simply did their thing: throwing the bait outside off but the other South African batsmen showed greater restraint outside off.Second, who displayed the tightest defensive technique among the South African batsmen, however, held nothing back against the loose balls. He cracked a Chahal full-toss through midwicket and then eased him through the covers. While Chahal did turn some past the outside edge of Shaun von Berg, he could not find it. Whenever Chahal overpitched outside off, Second and von Berg leant into the drive and handsomely stroked the ball through the covers. Second also employed the flat, hard sweep effectively: the shot that brought him his fifty off 115 balls. Von Berg, who had conceded 107 in 20 overs with his legspin, had some joy with the bat and scored a fifty of his own.All told, the Indian bowlers could not find a way past Second and von Berg for 50.4 overs. They even resorted to the short-ball attack but the two batsmen evaded them or comfortably fended them off. Von Berg is a fairly competent batsman with five first-class hundreds to his name, and he reminded everyone of that when he slapped Siraj on the up through the covers.Gurbani then returned, after another spell of rain that had forced early tea, to have von Berg nicking off twice in two overs. While R Samarth dropped the first chance, a more difficult one diving to his left from slip, he pouched the second without any fuss at the same position. The reprieve cost India A nothing: von Berg’s innings ended on 50 off 175 balls, the sixth-wicket partnership on 119, the visitors’ only century stand in the match.Second continued to give South Africa A hope of pulling off a coup, when he stretched forward and drilled a drive between Siraj and wide mid-on for four in the 109th over. However, seven overs later, Chahal, who had frequently erred in lines and lengths in the first two sessions, finally found his groove and bowled an accurate flat dart to leave Second and his team heartbroken.

West Brom injury news: Baggies suffer blow to "effective" fan favourite

West Bromwich Albion have been dealt an injury blow to one of their most integral starters, with a fresh update revealing that he’s set for a spell on the sidelines.

Who is injured at West Brom?

As it stands, Carlos Corberan still has Josh Maja out of action with ankle ligament damage, alongside Daryl Dike who has an achilles problem, and neither of the duo are yet to make any kind of significant progress with their issues both being longer term.

Alongside those, Jeremy Sarmiento is another player to have been hit by the injury curse after picking up a quadricep problem which the boss has revealed will leave him away from the senior group for at least the next four weeks, but he won’t be alone in the treatment room.

During Friday’s 3-1 defeat to Birmingham City at St. Andrews, John Swift was forced to limp off the pitch after 73 minutes after feeling some discomfort in his leg, so the central midfielder was replaced by Tom Fellows which is a shame considering how influential he’s been.

In the Championship this season, the 28-year-old has firmly established himself as the boss’ overall best-performing player with a match rating of 7.16 (WhoScored – West Brom statistics), though unfortunately for the Spaniard, he’ll have to cope without his star man for a period of time.

John Swift injury update

As per West Brom’s official website, sharing a John Swift injury update, the club confirmed that their talisman has been ruled out of action for the next month and a half:

John Swift will be sidelined for approximately six weeks after sustaining a calf strain in Friday’s Sky Bet Championship fixture at Birmingham City. Swift will immediately begin a period of rehabilitation and is expected to return following the November international break.”

West Bromwich Albion midfielder John Swift.

How many goals has John Swift scored this season?

At West Brom, Swift has posted seven involvements, six goals and one assist in 11 appearances so far this campaign (Transfermarkt – Swift statistics), which shows how prolific he is in the final third, therefore, it will be a blow for Corberan to not have him at his disposal.

Sponsored by Adidas, the veteran poses a real threat to an opposition’s defence even when he’s not on the scoresheet having recorded 53 crosses and 34 shot-creating actions this season, both of which are higher than any of his fellow teammates (FBRef – West Brom statistics).

The Baggies’ £22.5k-per-week earner (West Brom salaries), is also a versatile operator having been deployed in eight different positions over the grass since the start of his career, including everywhere across the midfield and three roles up top, so his ability to adapt makes him a wonderful player to have in the building.

For everything that Swift brings to the side, he’s an extremely “effective” ace, as hailed by journalist Josh Bunting, so everybody associated with the club will no doubt be hoping that he has a speedy recovery and can get back to the pitch as soon as possible.

Leeds have been bled dry by "expensive" dud worth £2.4m per goal

Leeds United's current predicament has come as little surprise to the fanbase, who were forced to bear witness to the steady decline of their club under the clueless ownership of Andrea Radrizzani.

Clearly hitting the jackpot with the appointment of Marcelo Bielsa, it would unfortunately mark the end of their success at Elland Road, as the eventual dismissal of the Argentine set off a catastrophic chain of events that have them currently playing their football in the Championship.

The appointment of Jesse Marsch was ill-advised, as was the decision to leave him in charge for so long, and their desperation at the end of the last campaign was embarrassing, desperately scrambling to find a manager to save them from the mess they had created. Neither Javi Gracia nor Sam Allardyce could achieve such a goal, and they would sell up in the summer.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke.

It is now the turn of the 49ers to hopefully lead the Whites into a brighter future, with their first window in charge marking a largely successful one given the pitfalls left by the old ownership.

The appointment of Daniel Farke marks an intelligent one, and his signings seem largely risk-free investments set to bolster the squad. That being said, they are still unfortunately holding onto some of the dead wood from the previous regime, outlining a slight failure on their part.

Who should Leeds United have sold over summer?

Despite last term's squad being largely responsible for their relegation, no less than 15 senior players jumped ship at the first opportunity.

However, that was not a wholly catastrophic event, given their continued presence might have financially crippled the club had they not earned promotion at the first time of asking.

Not only that, but most had shown themselves to be far from the requisite level to perform for a football club as huge as this one, so their departure was welcomed. Brenden Aaronson and Rasmus Kristensen will certainly not be missed, but the likes of Junior Firpo and Helder Costa somehow survived the culling.

Retaining the latter, in particular, marks a questionable decision, given how out of favour the Angolan winger has fallen at Elland Road.

Although the 29-year-old enjoyed an impressive initial loan spell and perhaps merited the permanent acquisition, it swiftly became clear that he lacked the consistency to perform within Bielsa's demanding play style. His average rating would drop from 6.76 in the Championship to 6.46 in the Premier League the following year, with his form drawn into question by many, via Sofascore.

Pundit Keith Andrews would claim in 2020 (Sky Sports Main Event 8/2/20 7:55 PM): "You look at a player like Helder Costa, and he’s a shadow of what we saw from when he got promoted in a Wolverhampton Wanderers shirt, and I don’t know what’s gone on there."

Then, a year later, former top-flight goalkeeper Paul Robinson would compile such misery by outlining one torrid display: "He lost his place in the Premier League side and this was his opportunity to prove to Bielsa that he deserves another chance. As an all-round team performance, I thought Leeds were terrible. Helder Costa was absolutely miles off it."

Given he was, as journalist Phil Hay put it, "Leeds’ second most expensive signing" back in 2019, he certainly disappointed.

As such, he was expelled on loan, first to Valencia and later to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad Club, where he has failed to reignite a stuttering career. Despite all of this, somehow Costa remains, slowly draining funds from Elland Road despite offering nothing to the club anymore.

How much did Leeds United sign Helder Costa for?

Having helped Wolverhampton Wanderers to win promotion from the Championship, the former Benfica trickster was enlisted by Bielsa to help them repeat such a trick.

Whilst he would actually offer some value, with his ten goal contributions in the league an admirable and useful return as they won the title, this would be a short-lived success that quickly devolved into a highly lucrative flop.

After all, it had not quite commanded the eventual £16m fee they would pay, which marked a big risk at the time.

What is Helder Costa's salary at Leeds United?

Having been at the club for four years now, although one of those was only on loan, and two more actually saw him sent out on loan, it is tough to pin down exactly how much Costa has taken from the Yorkshire outfit with regard to wages.

Marcelo Bielsa

His base salary sits at £32.5k-per-week, but has only really spent two full years draining the club.

As such, such a figure has amassed a further £3.4m that Costa has cost Leeds, with Bielsa's purchase marking quite an expensive failure given his longevity and seeming reluctance to depart. In total, the underwhelming dud has snagged £19.4m when combining the initial fee with the wages expended.

Does Helder Costa deserve to earn £32.5k-per-week?

The 5 foot 10 flop does not deserve to earn anything near what he currently does, with his salary made even more impactful following their relegation.

Finances are already tight around Elland Road, with most of those aforementioned summer exits likely enforced to comply with the strict regulations that the Championship imposes on its clubs.

Having since made 71 appearances for the Whites, scoring just eight and assisting a further 11, this paints an even more damning picture, of an attacker that costs £2.4m for every goal he scores.

When does Helder Costa's contract expire?

Fortunately for Farke, the expiry of Costa's deal comes soon, meaning they must wait for one final season to truly be rid of him in the summer of 2024.

When he eventually does leave for free, which all signs suggest he will, it seems like all the fiscal failings surrounding his move will be emphasised given they will recoup no fee for their tricky winger.

Whilst this deal does not crack the club's most expensive deals of all time, with regard to actual return on investment, it must go down as one of Leeds' worst.

How much has Helder Costa earned in his career?

Although, it should hardly come as a surprise to see Costa struggle, with his career failing to pan out the way it was expected after a bright start back in Portugal.

The nine-cap international has only just managed to hit 52 goals across his entire career, with his quick feet and burst of speed often flattering to deceive.

Despite that, the ex-Wolves star cannot be faulted for the financial incentive his tenure in football has handed him, amassing a total career earning of £9.94m. A mouth-watering figure for a man Farke likely cannot wait to get off his books.

'Haven't bowled as well as we can' – Walsh

Bangladesh’s interim head coach hopes for a big performance from Mustafizur Rahman and his spinners; says Shakib’s inclusion subject to a fitness test

Andrew Fidel Fernando in Colombo15-Mar-2018Bangladesh’s batsmen, led by Mushfiqur Rahim, have had their moments, but the bowlers have underwhelmed. So said stand-in coach Courtney Walsh on the eve of his side’s must-win encounter against Sri Lanka. In their previous match, Bangladesh had conceded 79 runs in a definitive six-over period against India. Even in the game they won, they conceded 214.There has been one bright spark in their attack, however, and this time it is not the young left-armer with the magic wrists. It is Rubel Hossain who has been Bangladesh’s best, maintaining an economy of 8.22 in three matches. Along the way, he has picked up four wickets. One of those was the wicket of Shikhar Dhawan, who was bowled by perhaps the ball of the tournament so far: a late-swinging, yorker that zipped past Dhawan’s outside edge and flattened middle stump.”Rubel has been very consistent,” Walsh said. “If the other guys stepped up, it would give us a little more cushion. I would be lying if I said I thought we bowled well. We have bowled okay, but not as well as we can. The improvement is coming, but not as quickly as we would like. If we can put it all together, it will be a big plus for us in Friday’s game.””Spinners also have not been as spot-on as we like them to be. They have had good patches. But if everyone did their bit, it will give us a very good chance.”Among those who have under-performed at the Nidahas Trophy has been Mustafizur Rahman, whose 12 overs have gone at 9.75 runs apiece, though he has also taken four wickets in the competition. His cutters have been only sporadically effective on Khettarama decks that have atypically failed to reward revolutions on the ball.Friday’s virtual semi-final will be played on a fresh pitch, which means that seam and swing may be more reliable fast-bowling weapons than cutters. “Someone like Mustafizur Rahman having a good game will help us tremendously,” Walsh said. “I am hoping he can step up to the plate in this crucial game. I know he can. He had some fantastic games in PSL so it is a case of turning it around here. One game can make a difference. It could be his game, or another bowler’s game, but we’re hoping that he comes good.”The attack would appear to have been bolstered with news that Shakib Al Hasan is joining the team ahead of this game, but Walsh was reluctant to suggest Shakib is a certainty for the playing XI. Though he will be with the team in the approach to the game, Shakib is expected to take a fitness test for his injured finger that has kept him out since mid-January.”He is on his way. Like any other player he will be assessed. If he is fit, someone of his class and calibre will be considered to play.”

Newcastle: Howe must now unleash £80k-p/w "livewire"

Newcastle United might have lost against Manchester City last time out in the Premier League, but Eddie Howe will be delighted with his side's application and will be confident of emulating last season's success and forging ahead with another prosperous year.

The Magpies qualified for the Champions League with a fourth-placed finish, and opened their 2023/24 account with an incisive 5-1 victory over Aston Villa at St. James' Park.

Howe's side did indeed lose 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium last week, but the performance was promising once again and now, returning to home turf, the Tyneside team await Liverpool, with Jurgen Klopp's side looking to reclaim the Champions League spot Newcastle have swiped.

What is the Newcastle team news vs Liverpool?

Ahead of this afternoon's anticipated tie, Howe said that he hopes for barrelling midfielder Joelinton to be available against the Reds despite suffering a knock against Manchester City.

The 45-year-old also revealed that while Joe Willock is "making good progress" as he recovers from a hamstring problem, the former Arsenal starlet is still not ready for match day consideration.

The club's versatile signing Lewis Hall, who completed a £35m move from Chelsea earlier this week (on an initial loan), could also make his debut for the club, though the teenage talent is lacking match fitness and is unlikely to start.

Harvey Barnes is yet to make his full debut for Newcastle after his £39m acquisition from relegated Leicester City last month, and having impressed through his two cameos thus far, might finally earn his chance.

Will Harvey Barnes start against Liverpool?

While Leicester suffered relegation from the Premier League last year, Barnes was one of the standout stars and posted 13 goals in the top flight and was hailed as a "livewire" by pundit Alan Hutton.

It was this clinical ability and directness that persuaded Howe to bolster his ranks with the dynamic ace, who offers a different kind of threat to the mercurial Allan Saint-Maximin, who joined Al Ahli for £23m in July.

Barnes' qualities were showcased most emphatically as he entered the fray in the 68th minute against Villa, replacing Anthony Gordon, and stamping his mark with a match-best Sofascore rating of 8.5, clinching a goal and assist and making two key passes.

The Chronicle's Lee Ryder remarked that the performance "justifies" Howe's decision to demand the transfer, and while he was benched once again against the Citizens, he completed 92% of his passes and unleashed a shot on target during his second appearance in black and white.

Newcastle United winger Harvey Barnes.

Against Liverpool, Newcastle are going to have to take their chances to bypass Alisson's goal, and given that Barnes ranks among the top 5% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals per 90, as per FBref, they would certainly have a good chance of doing so with him on the pitch.

The £80k-per-week phenom, who has been described as "incredible" by former boss Brendan Rodgers, must now be provided the platform to shine, and while he does not boast the finest record against the Merseyside outfit, scoring just once from seven outings, he could now be in position to wreak havoc against Klopp's squad.

Barnes is a player who has scored once despite only playing 56 minutes of Premier League action for the Toon, and considering that he has been dubbed “unbelievable” by Klopp, it's clear that Newcastle's forthcoming opposition fear the qualities at the 25-year-old's disposal.

With Newcastle now in a position to push for three points against an outfit of Liverpool's ilk, Howe must opt to give Barnes his first start since joining this summer, and by making such a move, the home side might just conclude the evening affair in rapture.

Shrubsole puts England's men in the shade

Anya Shrubsole has achieved what England’s men have found beyond them by being shortlisted for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year.Shrubsole won the accolade for an outstanding spell of five wickets in 19 balls, and 6 for 46 in all, against India at Lord’s – the best bowling figures in a Women’s World Cup final. As well as pulling off one of the greatest feats in England women’s cricket history, she became the first female cricketer to receive the Christopher Martin-Jenkins Spirit of Cricket award, for the manner in which she consoled South Africa captain Dane van Niekerk after England’s semi-final win, and also helped Western Storm win the Kia League title.”Humbled to be named amongst some incredible athletes!,” Shrubsole tweeted. “Top of the list of things I never expected to happen!”The latest honour is an indication of how England Women’s cricket is creeping into public consciousness, but as the men celebrate her success they will also ruefully wonder what they have to do.Ian Bell was the last male cricketer to be nominated, his stock never higher than when England won the 2013 Ashes. But two years later, as England won the Ashes once more, Joe Root and Stuart Broad missed out to general consternation, even though Root had established himself as one of the top batsmen in the world and Broad bowled out Australia in a single session at Trent Bridge with 8 for 15, with his look of amazement going viral.

Cricket’s SPOTY winners

1956: Jim Laker
1975: David Steele
1981: Ian Botham
2005: Andrew Flintoff

This year, England’s record was more prosaic, although Root did win his first two series as Test captain and James Anderson became the first England bowler to take 500 Test wickets. The relevance of the Sports Personality of the Year list – once eagerly awaited – is now widely debated as it is influenced by many factors, including the availability of BBC sports rights and the desire to ensure the shortlist serves all demographics. But Shrubsole will rightly be delighted at her recognition, for all that, as she joined a list that includes the likes of Mo Farah, Lewis Hamilton and Harry Kane. The fact is that cricketers have never done very well (neither, for that matter, have footballers). Only four have ever won and all of them after outstanding Ashes performances. It would probably take an England World Cup win on home soil in 2019 to change that.In the meantime, England’s women have set the example.Shortlist: Mo Farah (athletics), Chris Froome (cycling), Lewis Hamilton (F1), Anthony Joshua (boxing), Harry Kane (football), Johanna Konta (tennis), Jonnie Peacock (Paralympic athlete), Adam Peaty (swimming), Jonathan Rea (superbikes), Anya Shrubsole (cricket).

Lehmann, Head lead South Australia to recovery

The pair added 164 for the fourth wicket as South Australia recovered from 3 for 18 to post 6 for 291 on the opening day in Melbourne

A century of some panache by Jake Lehmann and a supporting hand by his captain Travis Head lifted South Australia to a decent first innings against Victoria on day one of the Sheffield Shield match at the MCG.Arriving at the crease after the Bushrangers had struck three times with the new ball, Lehmann counter-attacked so effectively that he raced to 74 by lunch and ultimately made it to 103, all watched by the selection chairman Trevor Hohns, as he deliberated on who should fill the Nos. 6 and 7 slots for Australia in the first Ashes Test at the Gabba.Head’s more measured innings was also an indicator of his candidacy for the role, even if he was disappointed to fall to the hook shot not long after Lehmann had also been dismissed by the short ball. Lehmann’s upper cut off Scott Boland was taken by a diving Aaron Finch at third man.In the final session, Tom Cooper and Alex Carey formed a serviceable partnership, before the wicketkeeper was visibly annoyed to slice a catch to point when a bigger score would also have pressed him into Ashes contention. Boland, Chris Tremain and Peter Siddle all bowled presentably for the Bushrangers, but, thanks to Lehmann, could not capitalise on their early successes.
