'Yes I'm in pain, but I'm playing for my country' – George Linde

George Linde thought his season was over when he saw bone through the skin of his little finger while fielding in his follow through in Pakistan’s first innings during the second Test.It was his third over, and the 23rd of the match, when Babar Azam drove the ball straight back to Linde, who reached out to stop it as it clipped his left hand and rolled away. With spots of blood visible on his whites, Linde immediately left the field, fearing the worst.”I started running off when I saw bone sticking out and I just popped it in myself,” he said, without flinching. “I went for X-rays and for some reason my finger wasn’t broken. I was quite happy with that.”Not just happy, but hopeful that he would still be able to play a part in the Test.On the same day, with his finger stitched and a dressing wrapped around it, Linde was seen practising and trying to adjust his grip. The next day he returned to bowl two overs. The day after that, he made a run-a-ball 21 and bowled another nine, in which he took three wickets for 12 runs to keep South Africa in the game. He admitted he was in some pain. but not enough to keep him out of the game.”I always say you never know when you will get another opportunity to play for your country. It’s not going to get me down, because it’s just pain. There are people who are sick at home, people who are losing their jobs, people who are dying from Covid or other diseases or something. My injury is nothing compared to that,” he said. “Yes, I’m in pain, but I’m fighting it because I’m playing for my country. I’m not going to stand back for anything just because my finger hurts a little. It hurts for ten minutes, then you get an injection and then you go on.”Linde is playing in just his third Test match, 15 months after making his debut in India and, with all his appearances coming in the subcontinent, is justified in wondering when his next cap might come. Not only do South Africa have no more Tests scheduled this summer but the state of the FTP means their next trip to Asia is uncertain, and even home fixtures are not confirmed. When they are, Linde’s place isn’t, because South Africa tend to play one specialist spinner at home and Keshav Maharaj is their first-choice.That means Linde has to make the most of the chances he’s been given, even if that means changing things about the the way he bowls. In this match, he has to remember a little something extra every time he prepares to deliver a ball. “I had to make a small adjustment with the grip. I didn’t even know I use my pinkie (little finger) when I bowl. It’s weird because every time I bowl, I have to first lift it up a little bit to get a better grip,” he said.So far, so good, with Linde appearing in full control in the second innings. He accounted for the wickets of Azhar Ali, Fawad Alam and Faheem Ashraf, who he could have dismissed for a duck had Dean Elgar held on to a catch at slip.South Africa put down three catches in total and allowed the Pakistan lead to swell to 200, but Linde doesn’t think the match has got away from them yet. “It’s quite difficult to get wickets here, especially against a good opposition. We bowled well and were maybe a bit unlucky with a couple of dropped catches,” he said. “But we are hungry to win this Test match. I’m pretty confident the batsmen will take us over the line in the next innings.”Asked what he thinks is chaseable on a pitch with variable bounce and where reverse swing could come into play, Linde was bullish and believes South Africa could still have another hundred runs to play with. “Anything under 300, we will take. Hopefully it will be 250, or 220 or 230. I think realistically under 270 or around 300,”he said. “I am pretty confident we will chase down.”

INEOS must sell Man Utd flop who earns more than Hojlund & Garnacho

With Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS now in charge, the future looks set to be far more promising at Manchester United.

Old Trafford’s glory days are in the past, with the last decade being a difficult period for the Red Devils.

Manchester United fans protest against the Glazers at Old Trafford.

From the function of the club behind the scenes to the performance on the field, it’s been well below standard, and that simply must change.

Ratcliffe will start by looking to move on players of no use, particularly those that are earning high wages, with one player who earns more than Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund surely on his way out.

Donny van de Beek’s future at Man Utd

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed back in April that Donny van de Beek will return to Man United this summer.

The former Ajax star joined Eintracht Frankfurt on loan last season, but the German club have rejected the option to buy of around £9m.

Manchester United'sDonnyvandeBeekapplauds fans after the match

The Netherlands star will look for a new club in the summer, with United also keen on letting their £39m man man embark on a new adventure.

However, according to more reports in Spain via TEAMtalk, Van de Beek will have three potential destinations: Girona, Lazio, and Inter.

Van de Beek’s career at Man United

When Van de Beek originally joined Man United back in 2020, the move didn’t exactly make much sense to begin with.

The number 34 was set up to fail from the get-go, with his main position, attacking midfield, taken by Bruno Fernandes, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer operating with two defensive midfielders, of which Van de Beek is not.

Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek.

Therefore, it’s no surprise to see that his minutes were extremely limited, especially because the United captain is always available and the best performer in the side.

Throughout his time at the club, the midfielder played 62 times for the Red Devils, scoring two goals and two assists, which is a rather uninspiring return.

Last season, Van de Beek attempted to revive his career at Frankfurt, but he only started four games, spending the majority of his time on the bench. But what exactly does he earn at Man United?

Van de Beek’s salary at Man Utd

It’s fair to say that Garnacho and Hojlund have had much more of an impact at United than Van de Beek already.

Hojlund netted ten goals in the Premier League last term while the Argentine scored seven and provided five assists, with the youthful duo becoming key players in the side.

Rasmus Hojlund

Alongside Kobbie Mainoo, the two attackers look set to be the faces of the new United era, not just because of their quality right now but also because of their potential.

However, the number 11 and number 17 aren’t exactly the highest earners in the squad, even earning less than Van de Beek.

As you can see, the Dutchman currently earns £90k per week, which equates to £4.68m per season.

For context, the attacking midfielder earns nearly two times more than Garnacho, earning 50k per week, while also having a higher salary than Hojlund, earning £85k per week.

Now, although he isn’t on an astronomical wage, such as Casemiro, for example, who earns a weekly wage of £350k, he hasn’t been able to justify his take home whatsoever.

Van de Beek is currently in a wage bracket similar to that of Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who have both offered much more on the pitch for the Red Devils than the “invisible” midfielder – as he was dubbed by football creator Liam Canning.

Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek.

Overall, it’s the best decision for both parties to part ways this summer, but one thing is for certain: Van de Beek has bled United dry over the years.

Spurs eye the perfect Højbjerg upgrade in £25m "brick wall"

As debut campaigns go, Ange Postecoglou did a reasonably good job in charge of Tottenham Hotspur last season.

Granted, the North Londoners slipped out of the Champions League places towards the end of the year, but with a swathe of injuries, securing a place in the Europa League is nothing to scoff at.

That said, Daniel Levy and Co must back the Australian in the market this summer if they want to see him lead the team back up the Premier League table.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou.

Based on recent reports, that might be happening, as the latest player touted for a move to N17 is a serious talent and looks to be the perfect Pierre-Emile Højbjerg replacement.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from Italian publication Corriere Torino (via Sport Witness), Tottenham are one of several sides showing 'strong' interest in AS Monaco's star midfielder Youssouf Fofana.

France midfielderYoussouf Fofana.

Alongside the Lilywhites, the report claims that West Ham United, AC Milan and Juventus are the other sides most keen on the Frenchman.

While this competition is far from ideal, the good news is that it might not be too pricey a transfer to complete. The report claims that a fee of between €20m and €30m, which is £17m to £25m, should be enough to secure the 25-year-old's signature due to his contract expiring next year.

AS Monaco midfielderYoussouf Fofana.

It might be a tough deal to negotiate with the number of other sides interested, but with the price being so reasonable, it's not one Spurs can afford to miss out on.

How Fofana compares to Højbjerg

So, with Højbjerg and Fofana both preferring to operate in defensive and central midfield areas, the two will be in direct competition for places in the team.

Alternatively, if the Dane does leave the club, the Frenchman would be his clear replacement, but how do the pair stack up against one another?

Despite starting 20 of his 35 games as a six last season, the Monaco "brick wall," as data analyst Ben Mattinson dubbed him, scored four goals and provided four assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 4.37 games. In contrast, the former Southampton star couldn't produce a goal or assist in 39 first-team appearances.

However, output isn't always the most usual way of comparing players that play near the base of midfield, so how do their underlying numbers compare? Is it still an easy victory for the Ligue 1 star?

Well, while the Lilywhites ace does come out ahead in specific metrics such as progressive passes, passing accuracy, tackles, blocks, clearances and ball recoveries per 90, that is about it.

Ultimately, while Højbjerg certainly has his strengths, his overall game is considerably less effective than Fofana.

Wolves eye move for "exciting" Ait-Nouri replacement

Wolverhampton Wanderers may have to sell players this summer before making any new signings, but it looks as though Gary O’Neil has several targets lined up for a move to Molineux…

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil before a Premier League game.

Wolves transfer news

According to A Bola, Wolves are showing interest in left-back Francisco Moura ahead of the summer transfer window.

O’Neil knows that his budget will be determined by whether he manages to generate funds from player sales, but signing Moura will only cost him around €10m (£8.5m) should he be willing to bring the defender to the Midlands.

This fee certainly won't break the bank and, aged just 24, Moura has his peak years ahead of him, which suggests it could be an interesting signing by O’Neil.

Rayan Ait-Nouri, the first choice left back at the Old Gold, is attracting plenty of attention due to his performances throughout the 2023/24 campaign, most notably from Manchester City.

Rayan Ait Nouri

There is no doubt the club could secure a massive profit on the 22-year-old should he depart after four years at Molineux, which would give O’Neil the licence to turn his attention towards Moura as a direct replacement.

Why Francisco Moura is an ideal Ait-Nouri replacement

Ait-Nouri missed just five Premier League games last term, emerging as one of O’Neil’s most reliable players.

He even chipped in with two goals and one assist, showcasing his abilities going forward as he was routinely used on the left side of a four-man midfield.

With City circling around the defender in the hopes of luring him to the Etihad, the promise of trophies and Champions League football might be too good an offer to turn down, which could pave the way for Moura to join the Old Gold.

The 24-year-old made the move to his current club Famalicao from SC Braga on an initial loan deal in the summer of 2022, before joining permanently last summer.

During his two seasons with the club, he has already made 73 appearances, scoring four goals while grabbing nine assists, indicating how much he loves to burst forward from defence. For context, the four assists tallied up last term was even more than Hwang Hee-chan who registered three in all competitions.

Moura was lauded as “exciting” alongside Yan Couto in 2021 by Breaking the Lines founder Zach Lowy during his spell at Braga.

Last season saw Moura play 33 games in the Portuguese top flight, averaging 2.3 key passes per game, creating eight big chances and succeeding with 71% of his dribbles, certainly proving how impressive he is advancing into the final third.

Defensively, the 24-year-old won 55% of his total duels per game, was dribbled past only 0.4 times per match while making 1.7 tackles each outing, demonstrating his abilities when he didn’t have the ball.

Signing Moura makes perfect sense for O’Neil, especially as losing Ait-Nouri is becoming more and more likely.

At just £8.5m, the Old Gold can secure a player who has proven his ability in one of Europe’s best leagues, while also having the potential to further improve by making a move to the Premier League.

Aston Villa boosted as 23 y/o target with "big skills" is open to move

Aston Villa have been boosted by the news that a 23-year-old transfer target is open to a return to the Premier League under Unai Emery this summer.

Aston Villa transfer news

The Villans have enjoyed a memorable week, with the 3-3 draw at home to Liverpool on Monday helping play a part in them reaching the Champions League, as well as Manchester City winning 2-0 away to Tottenham the following night.

It is a massive achievement by Emery and his players, but the main focus now has to be on signing top-quality players who could take Villa to the next level, with NSWE needing to provide the manager with the funds to bring in the right talent while also abiding with PSR rules.

Jhon Duran celebrates for Aston Villa

Joshua Zirkzee has emerged as one target for the Midlands club at the end of the season, with Monchi personally really wanting to sign the young striker. The 22-year-old has scored 11 Serie A goals for Bologna this season, as well as netting seven times in 19 caps for the Netherlands' Under-21s.

Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain and Spain midfielder Carlos Soler is also seen as a primary target for Villa, with Emery's men believed to be in advanced talks to snap him up. He is contracted at PSG until the summer of 2027, however, so they may not be able to sign him on the cheap.

Aston Villa boosted over target with "big skills"

According to a new report from Give Me Sport, Aston Villa are interested in signing Lille midfielder Angel Gomes, with the 23-year-old open to a return to England this summer.

The report says that he is "refusing to rule out the possibility of sealing a return to his homeland when the transfer window reopens", adding that "Emery has been given renewed optimism of being able to entice the 18-cap England Under-21 international to the Midlands".

Gomes could be an excellent option for Villa before the beginning of next season, and the fact that he would be happy to join the Emery revolution has to be seen as a positive. The Englishman made just 10 appearances for Manchester United during his stint at Old Trafford during his younger days, but Lille boss Paulo Fonseca has heaped praise on him since moving abroad: "Angel is maybe the most intelligent player I have in my team.

"He understands faster than the others everything about the game; he loves the game. He loves to learn and he is a player with big skills, big technique.

"He is a player who under pressure it is not easy to steal the ball off him and who discovers the space so easily. He is young, he has a big talent. I believe with the right coach, with the right project, with the right game for him, he can have the possibility to have a big step in his career."

Aston Villa struck gold with "standout" star who's worth more than Watkins

Unai Emery has chiselled this Villan into a player of staggering quality.

ByAngus Sinclair May 17, 2024

At 23, Gomes is still such a young player, and his ability to play in either a defensive or more attacking midfield role would make him a great option for Emery, in terms of squad depth. Eight assists in Ligue 1 this season highlight his creativity, and he could grow further as a footballer alongside better teammates.

Arteta hit the jackpot on Arsenal "wizard" who’s now worth more than Olise

It has been another brilliant season for Arsenal this year, and while the ultimate fate of the Premier League is now in Manchester City's hands, the Gunners look set to challenge for some time to come.

The North Londoner's rejuvenation has been in large part thanks to the combined efforts of manager Mikel Arteta and Sporting Director Edu Gaspar.

The pair have flipped the script on the club's history of lacklustre transfer dealings by overseeing successful signing after successful signing in the last few years.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice, and Ben White have all been transformational additions to the team, but another signing deserves just as much praise, and his recent valuation is proof as much.

Leandro Trossard's Arsenal career

The player in question is Belgium international Leandro Trossard, who signed for the Gunners from Brighton & Hove Albion midway through last season.

While it can often take signings a little while to settle into their new team and surroundings, the Maasmechelen-born winger looked at home from his first appearance.

By the end of the season, the 29-year-old had provided ten assists and scored one goal in just 22 appearances – 11 of which were starts – meaning he was averaging a goal involvement every other game from the word go.

His most impressive performance came away to Fulham in mid-March, as in just his sixth start as an Arsenal player, he provided a hat-trick of assists in the first half to essentially win his side the game before the interval.

At the end of the season, the right-footed "wizard," as described by journalist Charlie Haffenden, had the second-most assists of any Arsenal player across all competitions, which is truly remarkable considering the significant headstart his teammates had over him.

This season, seemingly bored with being the provider last year, the brilliantly talented Belgian has shifted his focus to scoring goals, and as things stand, he has found the back of the net 16 times in 44 appearances while still picking up two assists for good measure.

In all, Trossard has been an unequivocal success at Arsenal, and the impressive finances behind the deal only make his impact more remarkable.

Leandro Trossard's valuation in 2024

Arsenal paid Brighton just £27m to sign the 28-year-old winger in a deal that was generally seen as a fallback option after missing out on the far pricier Mykhailo Mudryk to Chelsea.

The 5 foot 8 attacker was also given a reasonable wage of £90k-per-week, and so there was little expectation that he would go on to have the sort of impact he has.

Yet, a year and a half later, the 33-capped international's performances have been so impressive that even though he'll turn 30 this year – four years past his peak, according to The Athletic – his valuation has actually increased.

According to the CIES Football Observatory, the Arsenal winger is now worth €40m, which is around £34m, or £7m more than he cost the Gunners last January.

To put that into context, as per the same site, he is worth just as much as Ben White and David Raya. Across the Premier League, interestingly, it is also €10m – £9m – more than the valuation of Crystal Palace's tremendously exciting Michael Olise, which just goes to show how impressive the performances of the former Genk man have been.

Olise has been nothing short of exceptional this term too, scoring nine goals and assisting four during an injury-disrupted period that's seen him feature just 17 times. Still, that's been enough to link him with a move to Arsenal in recent times.

Crystal Palace star Michael Olise.

Ultimately, while the signings of Rice and Havertz are likely to have a more significant impact on the club's long-term trajectory, the decision to sign Trossard last season was a genius one, and his recent valuation is yet more evidence of that fact. Just imagine if they get Olise too.

USA allrounder Nisarg Patel banned from bowling due to suspect action

Nisarg Patel, the USA allrounder, has been suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect after an independent assessment found his action to be illegal.Patel, a left-arm spinner, was reported after his side’s ODI against Oman on February 11 in Kathmandu. He bowled seven overs in the game, returning figures of 0 for 37.An assessment was then carried out by an expert panel, as per clause 4.7 of the ICC’s illegal bowling regulations, which concluded that Patel’s bowling action was above the permitted 15-degree level. His suspension will remain in place until he undertakes a review of his action by the ICC’s expert panel, or is cleared by an ICC testing centre. It is possible that Patel will continue to be picked as a batsman alone. While he averages just 20.28 in ODIs, he made a maiden half-century in the game against Oman earlier in the month from only 32 balls, USA’s fastest ODI fifty.

Chelsea could land an ideal Caicedo upgrade in £86m-rated "machine"

It's been a wild seven days for Chelsea Football Club, seven days that have seen the team fall to an embarrassing 2-2 draw with a ten-man Burnley side and then win 4-3 against Manchester United in one of the best games of the season.

Mauricio Pochettino still looks as lost as ever in the hot seat, but Cole Palmer's sheer brilliance was enough to carry his team through Thursday night's game.

Chelsea'sMoisesCaicedowith manager Mauricio Pochettino

That said, there were still a number of dreadful performances from those in Blue, such as Moises Caicedo, and it looks like the club could already be looking for his replacement based on reports this week.

Chelsea transfer news

According to reports from Spain earlier this week (via Caught Offside), Chelsea could launch a 'surprise raid' for Real Madrid's supremely gifted midfielder, Aurélien Tchouaméni.

Real Madrid star Aurelien Tchouameni.

The report has revealed that while even though there have been talks of financial fair play complications surrounding the club in recent months, Todd Boehly and Co are still keen on signing 'elite' players and would even be willing to sell Conor Gallagher to free up funds for such a move.

No price has been mentioned yet, but considering Real paid an initial €80m – £69m – to get their man in June 2022, it will likely cost a lot more than that, especially as the CIES Football Observatory currently values him at €100m, which is about £86m.

aurelien-tchouameni-liverpool-premier-league-transfers

It would certainly be difficult and costly to complete, but if Chelsea can convince the Frenchman to join the club, it could seriously improve their midfield, although it might not be so good for Caicedo's long-term future.

How Tchouameni compares to Caicedo

Now, it might seem absurd to think that Chelsea are already looking to replace their £115m summer signing, but after a debut season in which he has made several high-profile mistakes, such as giving the ball to Alejandro Garnacho for his opening goal on Thursday night, it might not be.

The Blues may be under different ownership these days, but with the pressure continuing to mount on Boehly and Co on a weekly basis, they might do something drastic, and with Tchouameni favouring the defensive midfield role the Ecuadorian plays, it feels ominous.

With that said, which midfielder is superior? Well, the first thing to consider is their respective experience, which, unfortunately for the former Brighton & Hove Albion ace, is an area he can't win.

Real Madrid midfielderAurelien Tchouameni.

In all, he has made just 91 appearances for a top-flight European side, 53 of which were for the Seagulls. In comparison, the Real ace has made 37 appearances for Bordeaux, 95 for AS Monaco, and 82 for Los Blancos, in which he has won a Spanish Cup, Spanish Super Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and Club World Cup.

Furthermore, he has won 31 caps for the French national team, including seven at the 2022 World Cup, where he played the full 120 minutes of the final.

kalvin-phillips-aurelien-tchouameni-liverpool-opinion

Okay, so what about their underlying numbers? Is the comparison one-sided there? Well, it's more bad news for the Chelsea man, as in the vast majority of relevant metrics, he is second, and in some areas, by quite some way.
