Rahul's 112* sets Gujarat Titans 200 to win

Rahul also completed 8000 runs in T20 cricket and became the first batter to score hundreds for three different IPL teams

Hemant Brar18-May-2025KL Rahul’s fifth IPL hundred took Delhi Capitals (DC) to 199 for 3 against Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Opening the innings, Rahul scored 112 not out off 65 balls, studded with 14 fours and four sixes, and became the first batter to score hundreds for three different IPL teams. Previously, he has scored hundreds for Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants.DC had a slow start, though, after being sent in. Mohammed Siraj and Arshad Khan stuck to good length and gave little room with the new ball. In the first four overs, there were 15 dot balls. Faf du Plessis, who tried to break the shackles and charged at Arshad, was caught at mid-on by Siraj. He made 5 off ten balls. After five overs, DC were 28 for 1. Rahul then injected momentum into the innings by hitting Kagiso Rabada for two sixes and a four in the last over of the powerplay. During that over, Rahul also completed 8000 runs in T20 cricket. Reaching there in 224 innings, he was the third-fastest, behind only Chris Gayle (213) and Babar Azam (218).With a four off Rashid Khan, Rahul brought up his fifty, his fourth of the season and coming off 35 balls. As a result, DC reached 81 for 1 after ten overs.R Sai Kishore had Abishek Porel caught behind for 30 off 19, after being hit for a six previous ball. That brought an end to a 90-run stand in 8.4 overs. But luck was on DC’s side, especially Rahul’s. In the 14th over, he got three fours off R Sai Kishore’s first three balls, all through luck. The first one was drilled back and went through Sai Kishore’s hand. Rabada misfielded the next and then an outside edge sped past short third.Axar took apart Sai Kishore in the 16th over, a strange call on Shubman Gill’s behalf to give Sai Kishore that over given Axar’s excellent record against spin this season. That over went for 15. Prasidh Krishna returned in the next over and dismissed Axar with his second ball. But Rahul and Stubbs added 48 off 22 balls in an unbroken stand to set GT a target of 200. With no dew so far, GT has their task cut out for them.

New Mourinho: INEOS lining up "sensational" Amorim replacement at Man Utd

After losing three of his first six Premier League games in charge of Manchester United this season, it’s no surprise that pressure is once again starting to mount on manager Ruben Amorim.

The 40-year-old could only lead the Red Devils to a 15th-place finish last time around, but he was handed the benefit of the doubt after taking the reins midway through the campaign.

However, the hierarchy backed him with over £200m worth of funds to strengthen his first-team squad, but so far, it appears that his attempts have been to no avail.

Questions have since started to be asked about his long-term future in the role, but it’s thought that the hierarchy aren’t yet planning a change of manager despite the recent poor form.

Despite such reports, rumours continue to swirl around Old Trafford, with numerous names constantly touted over a potential switch to take the reins in the near future.

The latest on United’s hunt for an Amorim replacement

Over the last couple of days, former England boss Gareth Southgate has been hugely linked with the role at United – not for the first time, after being touted for the position numerous times in recent years.

The 55-year-old would be a cheap option for the hierarchy, with no compensation fee needing to be paid, given he’s currently without a job after departing the Three Lions role in July last year.

However, he’s not the only manager currently in their sights, with Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner another huge target, according to Graeme Bailey.

The journalist confirmed in recent days that the Eagles are planning to tie the Austrian down to a new contract, but the Red Devils are looking to swoop and secure his services.

He also stated that the 51-year-old could be open to the switch after receiving a lack of funding at Selhurst Park, with the move to Old Trafford undoubtedly a huge jump in his managerial career.

Why United’s latest target would be the next Mourinho

José Mourinho was a manager who divided opinion during his time at United, but his ability to win trophies is something which simply can’t be understated.

The 62-year-old spent two and a half years in the role at Old Trafford, securing two trophies in the form of the Europa League and the EFL Cup – with both trophies coming in the 2016/17 campaign.

He also led the club to their joint-highest league standing since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, ending the 2017/18 season in 2nd place behind Manchester City.

His outspoken nature often drew discontent from the fanbase, subsequently leading to his departure from the Red Devils back in December 2018.

However, the hierarchy could appoint their next version of the manager should they appoint Glasner, with the Austrian possessing a lot of similarities to Mourinho.

In a surprising turn of events in 2024/25, the 51-year-old claimed the FA Cup by beating Manchester City in the final to secure their first-ever major trophy.

He also won the Community Shield against Liverpool back in August, matching the feat achieved by Mourinho at Chelsea before his own move to the Theatre of Dreams.

Glasner, who’s been labelled “sensational” by Sky Sports’ Dougie Critchley, has also led the Eagles to an 18-game unbeaten run across all competitions – the longest of any side in England’s top-flight.

In his 72 outings in charge of the Eagles, he’s claimed victory in 35 of them, whilst only losing 15 times – further highlighting how impressive he’s been at Selhurst Park.

Such a record has seen him lose six fewer games than Amorim at United, that’s despite taking charge of 23 more outings than the 40-year-old at Old Trafford.

It remains unclear if Glasner himself would be open to making the move to Manchester, but it’s clear that the Austrian would be an unbelievable appointment should Amorim depart.

Given the failures felt since the current boss took charge nearly 12 months ago, it’s crucial that the board make a huge call on his future in the coming weeks, but the appointment is just as important, with Glasner needing to be the number one target.

PBKS bowling attack heading into IPL playoffs 'certainly worrying'

“We went a bit overboard in terms of bowling bouncers and tried to take wickets,” Shreyas Iyer said about what went wrong against DC

ESPNcricinfo staff25-May-20253:09

Should PBKS be concerned about their bowling?

As the IPL 2025 playoffs draw near, Punjab Kings (PBKS) find themselves with a potential Achilles’ heel – their bowling. Even as the power-packed batting line-up has consistently put up 200-plus scores, the bowlers have struggled to deliver under pressure, with PBKS relying heavily on Arshdeep Singh, Marco Jansen and Yuzvendra Chahal. On Saturday, PBKS failed to defend 206 against Delhi Capitals (DC), which dented their chances of finishing in the top two. Their former head coach Anil Kumble feels “it’s certainly worrying”.”Yes [PBKS should be concerned about their bowling],” Kumble said on ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out show. “We have seen that on display. Other than Arshdeep and without [Harpreet] Brar to an extent… we don’t know what happened to Chahal [who missed the game]. It’s certainly worrying. And with Marco Jansen not being there for the playoffs, this is a worry.”PBKS’ spin-bowling coach Sunil Joshi clarified after the game that Chahal had been rested because of a niggle. While Brar stepped up in Chahal’s absence as the lead spinner to return 2 for 41, it wasn’t enough as PBKS failed to control the chase and DC scored 114 runs from the last 57 balls.Related

Bit-part Stoinis ready for bigger role in PBKS' blockbuster season

Arshdeep has been their best bowler with 16 wickets at an economy rate of 8.70 in 13 matches, while Chahal and Jansen – who will be unavailable for the playoffs owing to South Africa duties – have 14 wickets each. Left-arm spinner Brar has played only six games but has stood out, picking up nine wickets at an economy rate of 8.50. Allrounder Azmatullah Omarzai’s recent performances – five wickets in five innings at an economy rate of 10.60 – hasn’t been spectacular either, while Marcus Stoinis hasn’t had an enormous amount to do.After the six-wicket defeat to DC, PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer said that they “went a bit overboard” in trying bouncers and failed to execute plans.”I felt that it was a fantastic score, to be honest, on this wicket because it was helping the seamer,” Iyer said on the broadcast. “There was some odd bounce, variable bounce, and, yeah, the ball wasn’t coming at the same pace, so I felt that that was overpowering.”I think we weren’t disciplined enough in terms of our execution. Once we read the wicket in the first innings, we had planned that we would be bowling hard lengths as much as possible. Right in the stumps. I think we went a bit overboard in terms of bowling bouncers and tried to take wickets. Couldn’t execute that, but a great learning for the boys.”With just one game left in the league phase for PBKS, Kumble and Tom Moody warned that the loss could derail the team’s momentum, and that they shouldn’t start doubting themselves at the business end of the tournament.”Yeah, momentum’s a funny thing,” Moody said, “because when you’ve got it, you feel like when you go into a contest without bowling a ball, you feel like you’re ahead of the game already, even though the contest is starting on an even-playing field.Arshdeep Singh has been PBKS’ best bowler this season•Getty Images

“But when you don’t have momentum, you feel like you’re behind the game and you’re having to catch up to get even to start the game.”Iyer, however, sounded a positive note, and didn’t want to “dwell too much” on the defeat.”It [the IPL] is bigger than a [English] Premier League, I feel, because every team is equally poised in this tournament,” he said. “You never know when anything can happen, but you’ve got to stay positive and stay calm as much as possible, because there’s always a sunrise you’ve got to see tomorrow. You come in with a fresh mindset and also see to it that you’re sticking to the present and not dwell too much about what has happened today.”We’ve got to go back to the drawing board and see where we went wrong and definitely come in with a strong set of plans so that we’ll be able to execute pretty well in the next game.”

Arteta can make Eze better by benching Arsenal's "Player of the Season so far"

Arsenal came back with a bang this weekend

Mikel Arteta’s side appeared to have put their defeat to Liverpool well and truly behind them as they comfortably beat Ange Postecoglou’s Nottingham Forest 3-0.

There were brilliant performances across the pitch for the home side, with Noni Madueke continuing his form from the international break, Martin Zubimendi scoring a brace, and Viktor Gyokeres netting his third goal of the Premier League season.

While Eberechi Eze also impressed on his first start for the club, he did endure a slightly more unproductive night in the Champions League against Athletic Club.

Therefore, a slight tweak to Arteta’s side could get the best out of him.

Eze's superb showing against Forest

He may have made his official debut for Arsenal against Liverpool prior to the international break, but it was over the weekend that Arteta handed Eze his first start for the club, and boy did he repay him.

The England international was signed to bring an air of unpredictability and flair to the Gunners’ attack, and it took him all of five minutes to do just that, beating a defender and getting the crowd on their feet.

It was much of the same from that point on, as while he did not win every duel nor complete every dribble, the former Crystal Palace star was a constant threat on the left-hand side and ensured Forest couldn’t get a moment’s rest.

The Greenwich-born “magician,” as dubbed by Micah Richards, received his reward just a minute after the restart, drilling a ball across the penalty area for Gyokeres to smash into the net.

It was a truly brilliant performance from the Englishman, one that saw the Standard’s Sam Tabuteau award him an 8/10 match rating at full-time, which, based on his statistics, felt more than justified.

For example, in 79 minutes of action, he amassed a combined expected goals and assists figure of 0.50, provided one assist, completed three dribbles, took 43 touches, played one key pass, was accurate in 100% of his long balls, created one big chance, won two fouls and won 100% of his aerial duels.

It was the kind of showing that more than justifies the money Arsenal spent on him, although if Arteta wants to get even more out of him in the future after a subdued display in Europe on Tuesday, one change could be made.

The Arsenal star who can make Eze even better

The truly exciting thing for Arsenal fans is that after their summer of business, they have so many talented players in the squad who all deserve to start.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, Arteta could make Eze even more unplayable by dropping the in-form Riccardo Calafiori, “Arsenal’s Player of the Season so far” in the words of one content creator. Instead, Arteta must look at unleashing new signing Piero Hincapié.

The £65k-per-week international completed his loan move with an option to buy at £45m to the club on deadline day and hasn’t been able to play from the start for them yet, but as his performances in the international break showed, he’s more than match fit.

Moreover, there is one part of his game that could make him the perfect partner for Eze on that left-hand side: his ability to overlap.

The Ecuadorian “beast,” as dubbed by U23 scout Antonio Mango, might not be as gung-ho as a Jeremie Frimpong, but he is undoubtedly excellent at bombing up and down the byline, so much so in fact that respected analyst Ben Mattinson described him as “a left-sided Ben White.”

You can see some elements of his desire and ability to maraud up the pitch in his underlying numbers, with FBref ranking in the top 2% of full-backs in Europe’s top-five leagues for progressive passing distance, the top 4% for progressive carrying distance and overall carries, the top 8% for passes into the final third, and more, all per 90.

With all that said, you may wonder why having an overlapping full-back would help maximise Eze’s potential.

Well, simply put, while the former Palace star can play at left-wing and looked great there on Saturday, he is someone who very much prefers to move into more central areas when he gets closer to goal, which we can see from his heat map last season.

Therefore, if Hincapié starts at left-back and is the one to provide width through his overlapping runs, Eze can move closer to the middle of the pitch and do what he does best.

Ultimately, we’ve not seen it yet, but this pairing could be the one that helps Arsenal’s left-hand side become as much of a threat as their right has been in years past.

Marsh and Kohli move into top five on the Orange Cap table

Orange Cap table

RCB’s Virat Kohli and Mitchell Marsh of LSG got back into the top five and also crossed the 600-run mark in Lucknow. Asked to bat first, Marsh smashed a 37-ball 67 and was involved in a 152-run stand with his captain Rishabh Pant to help LSG post 227 for 3. It wasn’t enough though, as RCB chased it down with eight balls to spare and six wickets in hand. One of the key contributors for RCB was Kohli, who hit 54 off 30 balls to lay the foundation for Jitesh Sharma to take off.Marsh now sits at No.4 and he signed off the season with 627 runs while Kohli, who will be in action in the playoffs, is behind him at No. 5 with 602 runs. There was no change at the top with Gujarat Titans’ B Sai Sudharsan leading the table, followed by Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav of Mumbai Indians.

Purple Cap table

With Josh Hazlewood yet to play this IPL after recovering from his shoulder injury, there was no major shuffle on the Purple Cap table which is led by Noor Ahmad of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), with 24 wickets. Behind him is GT’s Prasidh Krishna, with 23, and MI’s Trent Boult occupies the third with 19 wickets.Hazlewood remains fourth with 18 wickets and has a chance to move up when he plays in the playoffs. Here’s what ESPNcricinfo’s MVP table looks like. And here are some other IPL 2025 tables that show the season’s best performers in different aspects of the T20 game.

Man Utd set to prioritise move for England star as Ruben Amorim & Co. turn away from £100m+ Carlos Baleba transfer

Manchester United are reportedly prioritising a move for Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton after cooling their interest in Brighton’s Carlos Baleba. The Red Devils were keen to strengthen in the middle of the park by signing the Cameroon international in the summer but have now decided to rethink their shortlist following the 21-year-old’s difficult start to the 2025-26 season.

Amorim an admirer of Wharton's desire to play brave passes

According to a report from United head coach Ruben Amorim is believed to be an admirer of England international Wharton. The report claims that the Portuguese has taken note of the 21-year-old’s ability to consistently pass forwards and not sideways, piercing through opposition low blocks to launch Palace attacks. After joining the Eagles from Blackburn in 2024, Wharton has quickly established himself as one of the Premier League’s best midfielders, playing a significant role in his side’s victories in the FA Cup and the Community Shield – the first two trophies in the club’s history.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportWharton moves up United's wish list following Baleba's struggles

The report concludes by claiming United’s interest in Wharton represents a rethink in their quest to strengthen in midfield, having chased Brighton ace Baleba in the summer. More defensive-minded than Wharton, Baleba has equally become one of the league’s best players in his position since moving to Brighton from Ligue 1 side Lille in 2023. However, following a transfer window which saw United initially open talks before opting to walk away over the Seagulls' reported asking price of over £100 million (€115m/$134m), Baleba has subsequently struggled so far this term, failing to complete a full 90-minute match. And therefore Wharton is believed to have moved up United’s wish list ahead of the January transfer window.

Brighton chairman confirms United wanted Baleba in the summer

Brighton chairman Tony Bloom recently confirmed United’s interest in signing Baleba this summer, telling “I don’t think Baleba was a saga. There was interest from Manchester United, and we said that he wasn't available this summer and they went away. So we've had many bigger sagas in the past. But Carlos Baleba, his improvement has been immense. Massively important player to this football club, and just delighted that he's with us for this season.”

Bloom’s comments came off the back of Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler admitting Baleba’s slow start to the season could be down to United’s interest in his services, saying in September: "For sure, when a young boy reads there is interest from Manchester United with a big, big offer, it might affect him deep, deep (down). That’s also part of the development to understand that when you play well, there comes a big offer, there comes a big club who wants to have him. But then to keep pushing, to be humble, stay here in Brighton, and try to make the next step with the team and that’s something we have to keep on working with him and therefore I can’t give you a clear answer if it’s really affected him or not. But for sure, he’s a young boy and we need to understand he’s not a machine that if you click on then he always runs and off then he stops. We need to understand his feelings, his emotions, where he comes from, and that’s our responsibility.”

Getty Images SportPalace owner says club are not under any pressure to sell Wharton

Meanwhile, Palace owner Steve Parish recently said he is not surprised to see Wharton being linked with a move to United, but reiterated that his side are not under any "pressure" to sell any of their prized assets.

He told "I think Adam at some point will want to play either in the Champions League with us, if we can make that happen, or probably with another club. He's an extraordinary talent. I think right now, and I can't speak for Adam, but I think he's focused on his time at Crystal Palace. He had a broken season last season with the groin issues that he had that a lot of young players get.

"I think this season he's completely focused on putting the games in, getting in the England squad, being a regular for us, and making sure that he can show that Saturday, Sunday, Thursday, Sunday. It's a difficult programme for us right now. I think he's very committed to the club. I don't know where all this stuff comes from.”

When asked specifically about United's reported interest, Parish said Palace were confident of keeping hold of Wharton, adding: "If Manchester United want Adam Wharton, there's nothing surprising really about that. The fact of the matter is he's got a long contract to run. There's no pressure on us to do it, and I don't think there's any real pressure from the player either.”

West Ham now open talks with "tactically astute" manager to replace Potter

West Ham United have now opened talks with a “tactically astute” manager, who could replace Graham Potter.

Potter under pressure after Crystal Palace defeat

It has been far from the ideal start to the Premier League season for West Ham, with Potter’s side currently sitting in the relegation zone, after losing four of their opening five games, and the manager is now under significant pressure.

Following the 2-1 loss at home against Crystal Palace on Saturday, there have been widespread reports suggesting the 50-year-old could be replaced as manager, after admitting he was disappointed with his side’s performance against the Eagles.

Potter said: “It’s this level and at the moment it’s not enough and we have to face up to that.

“We have to do more, we have to work harder, we have to find a solution to it. We have to be more stable defensively and offensively and find more ways to look stronger as a team. That’s where the work is now.”

Even prior to the defeat against Palace, the board were weighing up potential replacements for Potter, with Slaven Bilic and Nuno Espirito Santo named among the targets, and a new report has revealed that another manager is also being targeted.

According to a report from The Boot Room, West Ham have held talks with former Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Gary O’Neil this week, as they begin to prepare for life after Potter.

The report, which was released before Saturday’s game, states the Hammers’ hierarchy were planning to sack their current manager if they lost against Crystal Palace, which suggests it may be a matter of time before he departs.

Explaining the situation further, transfer expert Graeme Bailey adds: “West Ham are talking to other managers, and this tells us in recent history this is really bad news for Potter.

“It happened with Lopetegui and Moyes before him. Hammers’ sources are not pushing back; they can’t, as people know it is happening. It’s going to take some effort for Potter to remain in charge of the club.”

O'Neil would be risky appointment for West Ham

It is starting to look like the Hammers need to part ways with Potter, given that the manager has averaged just 0.92 points per match since his arrival, but there are doubts over whether O’Neil would be a savvy replacement.

The 42-year-old is still relatively inexperienced, having managed AFC Bournemouth for less than one full season, while he was also dismissed by Wolves last December, at which point the Old Gold were four points from safety.

The former Bournemouth boss has received some praise from a fellow manager, with Eddie Howe branding him “tactically astute”, but he would be a risky appointment, at a time when West Ham securing Premier League safety is paramount.

As such, Nuno may be a better appointment, having led Nottingham Forest to Europe last season, so it is promising news that West Ham are also in for the 51-year-old.

Leeds now want to sign £2m+ international to finally replace Illan Meslier

Leeds United are interested in completing the signing of an international ace, with the individual in question potentially replacing goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

Farke rues Leeds missed chances in defeat

The Whites were beaten 2-1 at home to Tottenham in the Premier League on Saturday lunchtime, giving a solid account of themselves but ultimately leaving with nothing.

While Leeds manager Daniel Farke saw plenty that he admired in defeat, he also rued the missed opportunities that came his side’s way at Elland Road.

“So, first, the overriding feeling is we are disappointed because we are playing for results. You want to win points. This is why we play football and for that we are disappointed. Apart from this, I have to say just many compliments to the lads for this performance because after this game I would normally be disappointed even with the draw, not even to speak about a loss. We were the better side today.

“We were the better side in all aspects. We had more possession, we had more passes, we had more expected goals, we had more shots, we had more shots on target, we had more big chances created, we had more big chances missed and we had more corners. Football is decided by goals. We missed too many of the good chances today in the first half and the second half. At this level, each of the little mistakes is punished.”

Away from the on-pitch action, Leeds have now been linked with a move for a new signing when the January transfer window arrives.

Leeds want to sign international goalkeeper

According to journalist Christian Martin [via Sport Witness], Leeds want to sign Ecuador goalkeeper Gonzalo Valle in 2026, with the 29-year-old currently plying his trade at L.D.U. Quito in his homeland.

He is valued at £2.2m by his club side, with his possible suitors willing to spend that much on him, and the Whites could sell £30,000-a-week Meslier in order to make room for him.The Frenchman was in the squad for the defeat to Spurs but is out of contract at the end of the season, meaning a January exit could be on the cards.

Not a huge amount may be known about Valle, considering he isn’t playing in Europe at the moment, but he has international pedigree, which immediately catches the eye.

He has won two caps for Ecuador, appearing for his country earlier this year, so he will be hoping to feature at next summer’s World Cup, and moving to a Premier League club midway through this season could aid his chances of doing that.

Worse than Gudmundsson: Farke must finally drop "unfortunate" Leeds star

At 29, Valle is now a hugely experienced figure who would add much-needed depth for Leeds between the sticks, with Meslier showing too often that he isn’t at the level required to be a genuine option for Farke now, proving to be an error-strewn figure.

Should Valle arrive, he would then battle Lucas Perri and Karl Darlow for a spot in Farke’s matchday squads.
