Enzo Maresca explains reason for Chelsea owners' surprise dressing room visit after Blues slump to Brighton defeat

Enzo Maresca explained why Chelsea's owners visited the Blues' dressing after a humiliating loss in the Premier League against Brighton on Saturday. After the disappointing home defeat, Chelsea's co-controlling owner Behdad Eghbali, along with several club officials marched straight into the dressing room. Maresca, however, played down the incident by claiming it is a regular occurrence.

Welbeck's heroics seal three points for Brighton

Former Arsenal and Manchester United star Danny Welbeck proved to be the star of the show for the Seagulls after his brace brought his side back into the game in the second half. The hosts took the lead through Enzo Fernandez's strike in the 24th minute and the Blues held on to their lead until the 77th minute, when Welbeck scored the equaliser. Maxim De Cuyper then put Brighton in front in the 92nd minute before Welbeck completed his brace in the dying minutes of the game.

Journalist reported after the game that Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali, along with sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, plus Joe Shields and Sam Jewell, marched into the Blues dressing room after the game, which raised a few eyebrows.

'They did not say anything to the players'

Maresca, however, played down the incident, as he told reporters: "They have been inside the changing-room, like always. We have an office inside the changing-room, where after every game, we sit and we talk about the game. But they did not say anything to the players. It was nothing completely different compared to the rest of the games."

UEFA writes pleading letter to Football Associations regarding plans to play games abroad as Barcelona set for La Liga showdown in Miami while AC Milan and Como prepare for Australia clash

European football’s governing body, UEFA, has sent a letter to all 55 member federations, warning them that prior approval must be sought before scheduling league matches outside Europe. Describing the matter as sensitive with far-reaching implications, UEFA stressed the need for caution amid plans to host AC Milan vs Como in Australia and Villarreal vs Barcelona scheduled for Miami.

  • Matches scheduled abroad and UEFA’s reaction

In a bid to globalise their competitions and expand their markets, European football associations are making plans to stage league fixtures abroad. With San Siro set to host the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics, the Italian federation (FIGC) is preparing to take Milan vs Como to Australia. Meanwhile, the Spanish federation has scheduled the clash between Villarreal and Barcelona for December 20 in Miami, USA.

However, UEFA, unhappy with the situation, has stepped in by sending a letter to all 55 member associations, instructing them to obtain prior approval before scheduling matches abroad. The final decision on whether such fixtures can proceed will be taken at the UEFA Executive Committee meeting in December.

    Contents of UEFA’s letter

German outlet has reported on the contents of the letter, in which UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin addressed the federations about the wider impact of the proposal. He wrote: "This is a complex matter with far-reaching implications beyond the affected associations, and it is currently being reviewed at a global level. It has already sparked intense debate and strong reactions from stakeholders and legislators across Europe."

The letter further says: "Given the sensitivity of this matter, I ask that your association first consult with UEFA regarding any such requests before granting approval and submitting it for formal review."

  • Reactions from different stakeholders

The idea of staging league matches abroad has sparked widespread debate. German Football League (DFL) executive Hans-Joachim Watzke has voiced strong opposition to the proposal, making it clear that competitive fixtures should not be taken outside the country, saying: "As long as I am in charge of the league, there will be no competitive matches abroad."

Como coach Cesc Fabregas echoed Watzke as he expressed his disappointment to schedule the game abroad in an interview in July.

However, DFL supervisory board member Fernando Carro has taken a different stance, expressing openness to the idea of hosting the German Supercup abroad. He believes it would present a great opportunity to stage a match between the Bundesliga champions and the DFB-Pokal winners in a market such as the United States.

"I have a different opinion regarding the Supercup. I wouldn't be averse to developing creative scenarios that would help the league achieve the global growth it needs, for example, by going to the USA," he said.

What UEFA could decide in the future ?

UEFA and the respective federations will now work towards finding an amicable solution that satisfies all parties involved. With football having truly gone global, fans across the world will be eager for the chance to see their favourite superstars in action.

Southampton now 'most concrete option' for £3m star likened to John Stones

Southampton are building for a tilt at promotion and could now be at the front of the queue to land a talented defender from the continent, according to Sacha Tavolieri.

Southampton set to replace Mateus Fernandes

With the window drawing to a close, Southampton midfielder Mateus Fernandes is being targeted by West Ham United and Aston Villa, and speculation over his future could well force the hand of Will Still. Nevertheless, the former RC Lens boss praised his star for his professionalism after he featured during Saints’ 1-0 victory over Northampton in the EFL Cup during the week,

He stated: “He’s top, he’s top. I think he’d missed quite a bit of football, which is understandable, but since we’ve brought him back in, he came on and made an impact on Saturday.”

Coventry City midfielder Jack Rudoni could replace Fernandes for a price in the region of £15 million. Nevertheless, he may not be the only body brought in amid further interest in Tyler Dibling.

Recently, Southampton have offered a preliminary contract to Eduard Spertsyan as his contract at Krasnodar is slowly winding down. Albeit, West Bromwich Albion star Tom Fellows could also be on his way to St Mary’s Stadium.

Two narrow victories over Wrexham and Northampton have given Still enough encouragement to work with as he sets out his vision. Either way, further additions will be needed to try and win promotion from the EFL Championship at the first time of asking.

Southampton "interested" in £400k+ defender who's been likened to Van Dijk

The Saints have joined the race for a “dominant” centre-back.

ByDominic Lund Jul 15, 2025

The race for Premier League football next term is wide open, and competition on the market is fierce as a result. Still, Southampton retain plenty of appeal and could now be in a good position to land their latest target.

Southampton 'most concrete option' for Louis Patris

According to Sacha Tavolieri on X, Southampton have emerged as the most ‘concrete option’ for Sint-Truiden defender Louis Patris this summer, alongside Italian outfit Sassuolo.

Hoffenheim have turned their attention elsewhere after initially being open to a swoop, leaving Saints in pole position for his signature. However, his £3 million price tag is said to be a stumbling block in negotiations.

Likened to John Stones by scout Jacek Kulig, Patris has made 35 appearances in total for Sint-Truiden, registering a solitary goal and eight assists, predominantly featuring as a right-back.

In addition, the 24-year-old can also operate in central defence, offering cover in what has been a problem position for Southampton after a bruising Premier League campaign last term.

Now, it remains to be seen if Still and company can elbow Sassuolo out of the way to land their target or whether the notion of playing in Italy takes his fancy.

Man Utd have two players to blame for Sesko's nightmare first start

This summer was very much the transfer window of striker moves and Manchester United were involved heavily within that.

While Alexander Isak was at the centre of his spat with Newcastle United, eventually joining Liverpool, the likes of Joao Pedro, Hugo Ekitike, Yoane Wissa, Nico Woltemade, Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko were making big-money moves of their own.

For a host of those names, they’ve made impressive start to life at their new clubs.

With three goals in four matches, Gyokeres is already the division’s second-top scorer behind Erling Haaland while Pedro and Ekitike have scored two apiece in the Premier League. Woltemade even netted on his top-flight debut for the Toon on Saturday afternoon.

For Sesko, however, it’s been a troubled start. Perhaps the writing was on the wall when he was listed as United’s tenth penalty taker in the shoot-out defeat to Grimsby Town a few weeks ago.

His first start, which he was rewarded with in the Manchester derby on Sunday, also wasn’t filled with much glory.

Sesko first start for Man United in numbers

When United signed Rasmus Hojlund, he was listed as a project striker. When Joshua Zirkzee signed at Old Trafford, he was also listed as a project striker.

Therefore, what Ruben Amorim needed this season was a proven figure, someone like an Ollie Watkins who has been there and done it in the Premier League.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

What did they do? Well, they splashed out £74m on Slovenia forward, Sesko. Acquired from RB Leipzig, the big centre forward has already been described as “the new Erling Haaland” and it’s easy to see why.

He’s got a strong shot on him, has lengthy strides and above all else, he’s got power in abundance.

The issue is, he’s still very raw, something that 13 Bundesliga goals last term sum up well.

Benjamin Sesko 2024-25 stats (timeless)

Since moving to United, it’s been a tale of woe for the Slovenian who doesn’t look at the races at all. His display against City, albeit a formidable opposition, showcased that.

The Manchester Evening News noted how the young attacker was “quiet” in the second half, and while he did have United’s only attempts at goal in the first half, he was ultimately replaced on 80 minutes, having managed an expected goals tally of just 0.03.

Sesko only had one shot and completed just 54% of his passes, outlining a frustrated and isolated figure at the top end of the pitch.

To sum up his woes, he had fewer touches (19) than goalkeeper Altay Bayindir (37), a statistic that rubberstamps his dreary day at the office at the Etihad.

That said, he was rather starved of service and it wasn’t all his own fault.

Two Man United players were to blame for Sesko's performance

Two of the bright sparks in this United team so far this season are new signings, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.

While Cunha is yet to find the net since trading Wolverhampton for Manchester, Mbeumo has scored, bagging in the win over Burnley prior to the international break.

Mbeumo once again looked like one of very few bright sparks in Amorim’s side on Sunday but he and Sesko were arguably let down by a lack of service.

Indeed, with Mason Mount and Cunha absent through injury, it meant a rare start for Amad in the Premier League this term in a more advanced role.

The Ivorian has featured at right-wing back more often this season, a role unfamiliar to him. Yet, with Mbeumo having signed, a player who has similar traits and tendancies, it’s unlikely he’ll feature in an attacking role on too many occasions.

With Cunha absent, however, it gave the 23-year-old an opportunity to showcase his skills in the final third. Sadly, he did not showcase them very well. Listed as a left winger on the team sheet, on a regular basis in the second half Mbeumo and Amad ended up on the same wing.

Even when the former Sunderland loanee was on the left, he failed to create anything of note for Sesko. By full-time, he had failed with both of his dribble attempts, not completed an accurate cross and only provided two key passes.

Behind him, wing-back Patrick Dorgu also did very little to help their new striker who was eagerly waiting inside the area, with the two of them combining to lose possession a whopping 25 times.

Dorgu did provide three key passes but in the words of MEN’s Samuel Luckhurst, “he had chances to service Sesko but his crossing was abject.”

The goals will flow for the big-money signing at some stage but he will undoubtedly need a better supply line than he was given by Amad and Dorgu on Saturday.

Sesko was poor but it wasn’t all his own fault. Truth be told, the whole United side are being let down by Amorim’s system. That’s a story for another day, however.

£300k-p/w Man Utd star's future in doubt after transfer approach from CR7

A “sensational” Manchester United star’s future is now in doubt, following a direct transfer approach from Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer.

Man Utd's rebuild continues despite transfer window ending

Man United managed to get a number of unwanted players off the books in the summer, namely Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Rasmus Hojlund, and there could now be another departure in the very near future.

There have been widespread reports that Andre Onana is closing in on a move to Trabzonspor, which may be a relief for Ruben Amorim, given that the goalkeeper has received his fair share of criticism.

Perhaps most memorably, Nemanja Matic responded to Onana’s comments that United were “way better” than Lyon, saying: “If you are one of the worst keepers in Manchester United history, you need to take care.

£1m+ Arsenal target has heart set on Man Utd move due to Sir Alex Ferguson

The Red Devils would be well-positioned to win the race for a forward.

ByDominic Lund Sep 10, 2025

“If David de Gea, Peter Schmeichel or Edwin van der Sar said that, I would question myself. But if, statistically, you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s modern history, he needs to show that before he says.”

As such, it seems unlikely that United fans will be too disappointed to see Onana leave, but another potential departure that could be on the cards may be a lot more divisive.

According to a report from Caught Offside, Bruno Fernandes’ future at Old Trafford is in doubt, amid widespread interest from the Saudi Pro League, with Ronaldo even making a direct approach to convince his international teammate to join Al-Nassr in the summer.

Fernandes ultimately opted to remain at Old Trafford, but there is a feeling the attacking midfielder’s future could change soon, and a departure could happen as soon as the January transfer window.

The Red Devils could choose to cash-in on the £300k-a-week attacker, given that they are running out of time to raise serious money from a sale, with unnamed clubs in the MLS and Europe also keen.

"Sensational" Fernandes may be necessary sale for Man Utd

There is no doubt that Fernandes is one of the best signings since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, with the Portugal international now just one goal away from 100 in a United shirt, while also picking up 86 assists in 294 games.

However, Paul Scholes has stated the 31-year-old doesn’t fit into Amorim’s system, saying: “Fernandes for me, he’s someone who fills in as a midfielder, he might get away with it for one, two or three games. He’s not got the discipline to be a central midfield player.”

The former Sporting CP man remained a key player under Amorim last season, being singled out for high praise by journalist Nizaar Kinsella back in May.

However, no player should be shoehorned into a system, so it may be the right time to cash-in on Fernandes, particularly if Man United are able to raise big money from a sale to Saudi Arabia.

'I managed Gerrard and Suarez but Brazilian star was my favourite Liverpool player'

Sir Kenny Dalglish stole headline after headline during his playing days, so it is no surprise his managerial career featured several world-class stars who did the exact same. As a legendary goalscorer himself, it only seemed right that he worked with the likes of Luis Suarez and Alan Shearer from the technical area – even winning the Premier League title with the latter at Blackburn.

The same can be said for Steven Gerrard. The former Liverpool midfielder would have caught a glimpse of Dalglish’s incredible Anfield legacy as a young boy and if you told that same young boy that he’d one day captain the Scot’s Reds, then it would have sounded more like a fantasy world. In reality, however, the Gerrard and Dalglish link-up did happen and even featured a trophy.

Gerrard’s not the only Liverpool icon that featured during Dalglish’s second reign, however. In fact, King Kenny was partly responsible for welcoming Suarez to Anfield in 2011.

After losing Fernando Torres, the Reds swiftly reacted by splashing out £22m to welcome Suarez on deadline day. And soon enough, Dalglish was pictured standing next to both the South American and fellow new arrival Andy Carroll. Of course, what makes that picture all the more iconic is the fact that Carroll cost Liverpool £15m more than Suarez.

The 30-goal involvements in 52 games was just a preview of what was to come from Suarez at Liverpool. The former Ajax man soon reached a new level entirely under Brendan Rodgers, but not many will forget that it was Dalglish who introduced him to the Premier League for the first time.

As good as Suarez and Gerrard were, however, Dalglish snubbed both of them when asked to name the best player that he managed.

Dalglish names "brilliant" Lucas Leiva as best player he coached

Not Suarez, not Gerrard, not Shearer, but Lucas Leiva was the name mentioned by Dalglish when asked to name the best player that he worked with. The Brazilian midfielder clearly had a fan in the Liverpool legend and the Scot made sure to hand him the highest possible praise when speaking to reporters.

Leiva, to his credit, is still a cult hero at Anfield for the many years of service he gave to Liverpool during some of their most frustrating times in the Premier League.

Lucas Leiva is presented with an award at Liverpool by Sir Kenny Dalglish.

Ultimately, injuries prevented him from truly realising his potential at the club, but there’s a very good reason why the midfielder kept his place for 10 years on Merseyside and remains a popular figure to this day.
