Steven Smith: 'Virat would know how Starc's trying to attack him'

The two have never played each other in the IPL before, but Kohli has scored 47 runs off 28 balls against Starc in T20s overall without being dismissed

When Royal Challengers Bengaluru host Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday night, the big sub-plot is the likely face-off between Virat Kohli and Mitchell Starc.Starc is playing his first IPL since 2015, when he was part of RCB, who were then led by Kohli. The two have never faced each other in the IPL, with Starc’s first season in 2014 also coming with RCB.”I quite like [Starc’s] match-up to Virat, the ability to swing the ball back down the line as a lefty,” Steven Smith, one of the experts on ESPNcricinfo’s TimeOut during IPL 2024, said on the show on the eve of the RCB vs KKR match. “We have seen him [Kohli] get out on a few occasions to Shaheen Afridi, Trent Boult, Mohammad Amir. In the first game against Punjab Kings, Kohli had an opportunity off Sam Curran dropped at slip. So I quite like the left-handed match-up.”Against Kings, Kohli was put down by Jonny Bairstow off Curran attempting a drive away from the body when he hadn’t scored a run. Kohli went on to score a match-winning 77 off 49 balls. Starc’s IPL 2024 opener, against Sunrisers Hyderabad, ended with unimpressive returns of 0 for 53, in a match where 412 runs were scored.Smith, who has played 187 games with Starc for Australia across formats and has led him in 58 of those, feels that Starc might well try and get Kohli’s outside edge while angling it away in the manner Curran tried, at higher pace.2:17

Smith on how the Kohli vs Starc face-off will go

“Starcy’s going to swing the ball back down the line early on, I’d imagine, and then use the wobble seam to go across him [Kohli], and potentially try and nick him off,” Smith said. “It’s going to be a good game, and I’m aware Virat would know how Starc’s trying to attack him as well – whether he tries to potentially come down the track [to] just take the swing out of play [we’ll see]. It’s going to be interesting to see how he counters it.”Although they have never faced each other in the IPL, Kohli has faced 28 deliveries from Starc in T20 cricket for India and for RCB in the now-defunct Champions League. In those duels, Kohli hit Starc for 47 runs without being dismissed even once. Overall, Kohli averages 31.53 against left-arm pace in all T20s with 52 dismissals.”You obviously learn as you go along, and you understand what players are trying to do to try and get you out,” Smith said of Kohli. “I’m sure he would have seen that [data], and tried to improve on that throughout. So it’s going to be a nice match-up.”

'Don't sign the contract if you're not going to live up to it' – USMNT icons Alexi Lalas, Landon Donovan express concerns over Lionel Messi's decision to skip 2025 MLS All-Star

The former USMNT players addressed the Argentine’s controversial absence from the 2025 MLS All-Star Game

Donovan referenced David Beckham's approachInter Miami facing contract negotiations with MessiLeague still determining whether Messi faces suspensionGetty Images SportWHAT HAPPENED?

Former U.S. international Alexi Lalas addressed Lionel Messi's absence from the 2025 MLS All-Star Game, describing it as an uncomfortable situation for the league. Lalas emphasized that the All-Star Game is a well-known priority for MLS.

“Any team, including the MLS All Star team in this case, would want Messi playing in it… so this puts MLS in this awkward situation of having their marquee player not playing in their marquee game, and by contract violation," Lalas said on his podcast. “Messi, we all know more than any player in Major League Soccer history has incredible leverage. And you signed the contract. If you did not like the contract at the time, you should have changed it – with that leverage if you could. And if you can't, then don't sign the contract if you're not going to live up to it.”

The analyst said that, despite Messi's incredible efforts on the pitch, he deserves criticism for his ASG no-show.

“This is a contractual obligation, and MLS and Inter Miami are paying you a boatload of money, and Apple for that matter, are paying you a boatload of money," Lalas stated. "And as I said before, you have returned, maybe even more so in what you have done on the field and the attention that you were brought. But it does rub me a little the wrong way that Messi – as awesome as he is – it doesn't mean that he is not worthy of criticism."

He also called it a bad look for both Messi and for MLS, as the two parties could have found a potential compromise.

“It's a bad look for Messi. I think it's a bad look for MLS. And again, it goes back to communication," Lalas said. "This could have been sorted out beforehand, if Messi truly does not want to play in the All-Star game. I don't agree with it. But it's Messi. So you figure out a way to just [address] the situation as opposed to making it a story right now.

"You get with his representation and you get with the league and you figure out a way to make it so that yes, he does have some sort of injury or so or something that's going that's going on.”

AdvertisementGetty Images SportWHAT DONOVAN SAID

Landon Donovan used David Beckham as an example, pointing to the fact that he understood what such games meant for MLS.

“All the talk is around Lionel Messi and why he is not attending,” Donovan posted on Instagram. “When David Beckham came into the league, he uniquely understood the value of these big events for the league. And whether David agreed with it at the time or not, he understood the league's perspective. Now Lionel Messi and David are not the same person, but they're having the same impact on the league at different points in the league’s history."

Donovan said he understands why Messi skipped the game and acknowledged that the Miami star has played a lot of games over the last few months. But he added that it's going to be interesting to see how the league responds.

“From the League's perspective this is really frustrating because you have your best player, your partners want him there, the owners want him there, the sponsors want him there, the fans want him there, the other guys on the MLS All-Star team want the chance to play with Messi – that's a dream for them," he said. “So this becomes a really challenging situation, and from the league standpoint now, what do you do? … Inter Miami and the league are trying to renegotiate, so that he stays here – his contract is up at the end of the season."

He added that Beckham's ownership role with Inter Miami could also complicate matters.

"Beckham is also an Inter Miami owner, so we don't know exactly what went on behind the scenes," he said. "From Lionel Messi's standpoint, I can understand why he didn't want to come. It makes me appreciate David much more in doing those things he didn't want to do. It puts the league in a really, really tough position now."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

As per the MLS’ rules, players who miss the All-Star game are face a one-match suspension, which means that Messi and Alba could potentially miss Inter Miami’s next game against FC Cincinnati. However, the league hasn’t confirmed whether there will be suspensions. Commissioner Don Garber declined to comment on any disciplinary action.

High-scoring KKR vs miserly Royals as IPL's top two square off

Match details

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR – 2nd; P5 W4 L1) vs Rajasthan Royals (RR – 1st; P6 W5 L1)
Kolkata, 7.30pm IST (2pm GMT)

Big picture

First versus second. Bowling versus batting. On Tuesday at Eden Gardens, Rajasthan Royals, the team with the best combined economy rate in the IPL (8.33) will come up against Kolkata Knight Riders, the team with the -best scoring rate (10.43 – , 7 Andre Russell, 8 Ramandeep Singh, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Vaibhav Arora, 11 Harshit Rana, 12 .Rajasthan Royals
Jos Buttler and Ashwin missed Royals’ most recent match, against Punjab Kings on Saturday, with niggles. Both are expected to slot back in if fit, with Tanush Kotian – an offspinner who didn’t bowl and opened the batting in that game against Punjab – and either Rovman Powell or Keshav Maharaj, depending on the toss result, returning to the subs bench.Likely XII 1 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 2 Jos Buttler, 3 Sanju Samson (capt & wk), 4 Riyan Parag, 5 Shimron Hetmyer, 6 Dhruv Jurel, 7 , 8 R Ashwin, 9 Trent Boult, 10 Avesh Khan, 11 , 12 Yuzvendra Chahal.

In the spotlight

Harshit Rana was an unsung hero for KKR in their win over LSG on Sunday, his figures of 0 for 35 concealing how much of an impact he made by conceding just 16 off 11 balls to Nicholas Pooran despite their skirmish taking place during the 17th and 19th overs. Harshit’s changes of pace and use of the over-the-wicket angle to slant the ball away from the left-hander’s hitting arc were crucial to this, and he might need to call on those defensive skills again if he comes up against Shimron Hetmyer on Tuesday.2:35

How has Avesh Khan’s season gone so far?

R Ashwin is a master against left-hand batters, but he’s not enjoyed bowling to two prominent KKR left-handers. Nitish Rana has hit him for 108 runs in 58 balls without being dismissed, while Sunil Narine has tonked him for 60 off 22 while being dismissed once.

Stats that matter

  • Of the eight KKR batters to score at least 50 runs this season, six have 150-plus strike rates, and one has gone at 144.44. The exception to this rule of fast scoring has been Shreyas Iyer, whose 129 runs have come at 120.56.
  • Yuzvendra Chahal has taken a wicket every 12 balls in IPL 2024, his best strike rate for any season of this tournament.
  • Chahal needs three wickets to reach the 350 mark in T20 cricket.
  • Avesh Khan has bowled the joint-most overs (10) at the death (last four) of any bowler in IPL 2024 alongside Mustafizur Rahman and Mohit Sharma, and his economy rate (9.30) puts him in the top half of bowlers who have sent down at least five overs in that phase this season.
  • In two games at Eden Gardens so far this season, Sunil Narine has an economy rate of 4.50 across eight overs, and hasn’t conceded a single boundary. The other spinners in those games have gone for a combined 10.01 per over.

Pitch and conditions

Eden Gardens has only hosted two games so far this season – a run-fest in late March where KKR narrowly defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad, and a lower-scoring outing on Sunday afternoon when KKR brushed aside a diffident LSG unit. It’s not a large enough sample size to draw too many conclusions from, but by and large the ball tends to come onto the bat here, and the outfield is lightning quick.

Australia men's tour of Ireland could be postponed due to financial and venue pressures

The trip is due to feature three ODIs and a single T20 before Australia head over to play England in white-ball series

Tristan Lavalette07-Mar-2024Ireland are contemplating postponing their first ever men’s bilateral series against Australia due to financial and logistical pressures.Under the Future Tours Programme, Australia are scheduled to tour Ireland for three ODIs and a one-off T20I in August and September before journeying to England for further white-ball series. But the likely strains of a hectic home summer ahead for Ireland has forced a reconsideration of the Australia fixtures and whether they can feasibly go ahead. Australia have previously played one-off ODIs in Ireland around tours to England.Pakistan and South Africa are set to tour for white-ball series, while Ireland will also host a T20 tri-series with the Netherlands and Scotland. Ireland, who just recently won their first ever Test match against Afghanistan, are set to play Zimbabwe in a one-off Test and white-ball cricket. Ireland have not hosted a Test match since their debut against Pakistan in 2018.England, Sri Lanka and the Netherlands are also earmarked to tour Ireland in women’s cricket. Ireland’s home schedule is expected to be announced within a fortnight.”What we had in the FTP as a whole… it’s a real challenge to deliver all of it. We’ve got almost too much cricket for the amount of venues that we’ve got,” Cricket Ireland high performance director Richard Holdsworth told ESPNcricinfo.”Costs of putting on games in Ireland have gone up considerably since Covid. Hotel prices, putting up temporary infrastructure for grounds have gone up astronomically.”Holdsworth said the Australia white-ball series would not be shifted to England, where Ireland have previously hosted matches in Chelmsford and Bristol. After this year, Australia are not set to tour the UK until the 2027 Ashes.”England have a really heavy schedule around that time, and we certainly wouldn’t be considering playing the likes of Australia at a very small county ground,” he said. “We’re still looking at all options in terms of whether or not we can host [Australia] this summer or whether we move [them] into a different part of the FTP.”Holdsworth said delivering the entire international schedule would have been easier if Ireland had access to its full allocation of ICC funds from the new distribution model. Some of the funds allocated to members in the distribution model will go into a retained surplus fund, which will be invested and distributed back to members at a later time. Around US$3 million of their $18 million a year allocation is earmarked for the surplus fund.”It has meant that our budget is not as great as we thought it would be,” Holdsworth said. “If we had more revenues coming in this year, there’s no question that we could have been able to deliver more.”Holdsworth said Ireland, along with Afghanistan and Zimbabwe, may be able to reduce the withholding of funding by a small percentage with discussions over the issue set for next week’s ICC meetings in Dubai.

'From another planet!' – Ardon Jashari plays 'like a 30-year-old' but incoming AC Milan signing has one flaw, says his former manager

Luzern manager Mario Frick, who worked with Ardon Jashari at the Swiss club, pointed out a flaw in AC Milan's new signing while heaping praise on him.

Milan landed the Swiss midfielder after intense negotiationsJashari's former coach heaped high praise on the 23-year-oldFrick pointed out a flaw in the Rossoneri’s new signingFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Frick, who coached Jashari at Luzern, heaped high praise on the midfielder but pointed out a flaw he feels the 23-year-old could work on. Jashari, who joined Club Brugge from Luzern last summer, is set to complete a €38 million (£33m/$43m) move to AC Milan after refusing to play for Brugge to force the transfer.

AdvertisementAFPTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Jashari’s move to Milan marks the end of a tense period at Club Brugge, just a year after joining the Belgian side. Despite interest from Chelsea, Inter and Neom, the 23-year-old had his heart set on AC Milan. He was left out of club's Super Cup win over Union SG, with the team's captain saying he did not want to play for the Belgian side and he was left out for their opening league match.

Milan initially submitted a bid of €32m (£28m/$37m) plus €6 million in bonuses, but Brugge rejected the offer. Although reluctant to go overboard, Milan eventually returned with an improved offer that finally got the deal across the line.

WHAT MARIO FRICK SAID

Frick praised the midfielder’s maturity and labelled him as a born leader, saying: "From another planet: he'll have a great career, he's already on the pitch like a thirty-year-old. He's a natural-born leader: at twenty, he was already the head of the dressing room."

However, Frick also pointed out a flaw that Jashari still needs to work on, adding: "Whenever he can, he plays vertically, and I'm sure he would do the same in Italy. The only flaw is that he doesn't score many goals, but he has pace, he's quick, and he's physically strong."

Curran sends Royals crashing to fourth straight loss

The PBKS stand-in captain starred with 2 for 24 before taking his team home with an unbeaten 63

Form can change quickly in T20s, and in a league like IPL the non-stop action can quickly turn the tide too. Rajasthan Royals (RR) became the second team to prove that in this IPL after Royal Challengers Bengaluru. But unlike RCB, who have won five matches straight, RR have now lost four in a row after winning as many on the bounce to hurt their chances of a top-two finish. The latest loss came in Guwahati, where Sam Curran and the rest of the Punjab Kings (PBKS) bowlers combined to first restrict RR to 144. Curran, who picked up 2 for 24, led PBKS’ charge with the bat with an unbeaten 63 to complete the chase with seven balls and five wickets to spare. That, after PBKS had slipped to 48 for 4 in eight overs.Curran’s heroics spoiled local boy Riyan Parag’s day, who scored 48, exactly one-third of RR’s total.Curran rings in the changesSanju Samson had opted to bat in the first game at the Barsapara Stadium this IPL. And after four overs, the game wasn’t going either ways, with RR on 31 for 1. Curran had Yashasvi Jaiswal chopping on off the fourth ball of the day after the first one was driven through cover for four.Samson hit three boundaries off his first eight balls, with a punch off Arshdeep Singh from the full face of the bat. At the other end, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, who came in for Jos Buttler, had started rather sedately.Curran then introduced Nathan Ellis for the fifth over. Ellis bowled cutters on a slow pitch where the ball seemed to stop, and even banged some on a hard length to test the batters. And that is when RR slowed down. The next 3.2 overs went for only 11 runs, with both Samson and Kohler-Cadmore departing for 18.Parag, Ashwin fight in middle oversPBKS bowled ten dot balls in three overs, starting with the sixth one. While Ellis and Harshal Patel used the variations to great effect, Rahul Chahar found turn. With two right-hand batters in Parag and R Ashwin at the crease, Curran gave the ninth over to left-arm spinner Harpreet Brar. But Ashwin managed a streaky boundary to get ten off the over.RR had only 68 on the board after 11 overs, when Ashwin counterattacked. He slogged Chahar over midwicket for six, before reverse sweeping and lofting him over the covers for four. But Arshdeep ended Ashwin’s party in the next over by having him caught at deep point after an entertaining 28 from 19 balls.Riyan Parag fell two short of a half-century•BCCI

Parag, though, continued to fight, even as RR were 102 for 6 midway into the 15th over. By then, Curran had removed Dhruv Jurel for a duck, while Chahar had Rovman Powell caught and bowled for 4. The death overs (17-20) began with RR on 113, before Parag walloped and sliced Arshdeep for consecutive fours.PBKS denied Parag the strike in the entire 19th over. Come the 20th, Harshal trapped Parag for 48 with his trademark dipping, slow full toss, as the Purple Cap switched heads again, with Harshal finishing the day on 22 wickets, two ahead of Jasprit Bumrah.Curran, Jitesh spoil RR’s top-two chancesNo. 6 Jitesh Sharma had joined Curran at the crease after RR slowed the chase down. Despite Rillee Rossouw counterattacking after the early loss of Prabhsimran Singh – it was an IPL record 28th time that Trent Boult had struck in the first over – RR had PBKS at 37 for 3 after five overs. When Yuzvendra Chahal had Jonny Bairstow caught at long-on for a scratchy 14 off 22, PBKS were reeling at 48 for 4.But Jitesh and Curran didn’t allow RR to run away with the game just yet. Jitesh pulled his second ball for six, before Curran managed a lucky four off the bottom edge off Chahal. They kept ticking over singles while also finding the occasional boundary, with Curran swiping Chahal wide of long-on, swatting Ashwin to deep extra cover, and whipping Boult behind square, all in consecutive overs. The required rate had risen up to 9.33 an over with six overs left, when both Jitesh and Curran pumped a six each off Ashwin. But Jitesh was caught off Chahal in the next over, before PBKS brought on Ashutosh Sharma as an Impact Sub, and the match was soon over.Ashutosh ramped Avesh for four, before Curran and Ashutosh smashed three sixes in the space of five balls to level scores and soon seal victory.
