U.S. international Alejandro Zendejas got Club América off to a bright start in the Apertura 2025, scoring the opening goal in their 1–1 draw against FC Juárez on Friday night. But beyond the scoreboard, his celebration sent a powerful message.

After finding the back of the net, Zendejas paid tribute to Portuguese star Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away days earlier in a car accident. The América winger honored him by mimicking one of Jota’s signature celebrations – a heartfelt moment that quickly made headlines across social media.

Pope fit and ready to deputise for Stokes if needed

Ollie Pope says he is ready to captain England against India if Ben Stokes’ knee prevents him from playing in the first Test.Stokes underwent surgery on his troublesome left knee immediately after the World Cup where he played as a specialist batter. The hope is that he will be fit to take part against India in the first Test, starting on January 25 in Hyderabad, in a full capacity, but Pope has said it would be “silly” of him not to prepare for the scenario where the reins are handed over to him.”I think naturally when you are vice-captain there is always a risk that the captain can go down,” Pope said ahead of the deciding ODI of England’s tour of the Caribbean. “Of course that is something that I can think about if it needs to happen but the feedback I have had from the physios [regarding Stokes] since the surgery has been really positive. Stokesy is doing good but it would be silly for me not to prepare.”Related

  • Five things England can learn in the Caribbean

Pope has been a non-playing member of the ODI squad after getting his first call-up to an England white-ball team and is continuing his own rehab following the dislocated shoulder he suffered in the Ashes.Describing the experience of watching the final three matches of the series against Australia go ahead without him as “painful”, Pope is nevertheless now back to more-or-less 100% full fitness.”It was awesome to watch and I couldn’t leave my sofa some days,” Pope said of the Ashes, which ended 2-2. “It was frustrating not playing but the guys put on a real good show and I felt I was living it with them a little bit from my sofa with my shoulder in a sling”[But] I’m good. The shoulder has been good. It’s a stable joint and it can still be sore when I’m throwing, but that’s something I’m going to have to put up with for a while.”During training in Antigua, Pope threw almost exclusively underarm, but has since started to throw overarm at times, saying that it’s simply a case of saving the majority of his throws for game time. It is the third time that Pope has dislocated his shoulder, after suffering the same injury on his left side in 2019 and 2020, but he said that despite the injury occurring whilst he was diving in the field on all three occasions, he remains confident in his ability to throw himself around.”Not [when] diving,” Pope said of whether the injury remains in the back of his mind. “Because I’ve had the same surgery on my left side. I trust the operation and what has happened to my shoulder. I have had two on my left, the first was a smaller one which didn’t go to plan, but in terms of diving around, no. I know I have a stable joint now and that is the good thing in my mind.”This is the fourth week in a row that Pope has been away from home, after he joined up with the white-ball squad in the Caribbean after being part of the England Lions red-ball training camp in Abu Dhabi.”It is a lot better preparation for India than it would be back in the indoor school at The Oval or in the gym the whole time,” he said.”Each batter has probably started thinking about their gameplan whether that is defence or attack. We are going to go about it in a positive way. The pitches in India can be really flat as well so you never know it could be 600 par score in the first innings or it could be 200 par score. Each batter has clarity in their mind and we have been speaking with Trescothick since summer about honing defence.”It is the first time that Pope has had to split red- and white-ball thought processes having had five years in the England set-up exclusively as a Test cricketer. Having played just three List A matches in the last four years, Pope’s inclusion in the one-day squad was a surprise if not a shocking one, with England long having earmarked the right-hander as a multi-format player.”I think anywhere three, four, five,” Pope said of where he expects to fit into the XI when the time for a debut comes. “I feel like I can play spin quite nicely and rotate quite nicely. I think I have to just keep developing the boundary options.”I knew I had a chance and I feel like my game is well suited to 50-over cricket. I just had a bit of bad luck in 50-over cricket over the last couple of years. I feel I have a lot to offer, but now I want to go and show it.”

With a chance to host a BBL final on the line, Brisbane Heat captain Nathan McSweeney has backed his allrounders to fire with the bat if required in the qualifying final against Sydney Sixers. The qualifier will be played on the Gold Coast on Friday night and the Heat will not having batting big guns Colin Munro or Sam Billings, who have joined their T20 sides in the UAE. The winners of the sold-out qualifier will host the final on Wednesday.Heat won the 2012 final against Perth at the WACA, their only title, but have never hosted a final.Related

Bowlers Paul Walter, Matt Kuhnemann and Xavier Bartlett made the BBL team of the tournament. However, none of the Heat batters made the side, and Munro is the only Heat batter in the top 20 run-scorers for the season. That fact does not faze McSweeney. Walter and Bartlett are both handy with the bat, and allrounder Michael Neser recently made a match-winning 64 not out against the Scorchers.”All year everyone has contributed with the bat. We weren’t relying on Munro, Billings, Marnus [Labuschagne] and Usman [Khawaja] the whole time,” McSweeney said.”Neser played an unbelievable innings that won us the game the other night, and Xavier has done it before. Paul Walter has made runs. The confidence is that no matter who we have out there, we can get the job done.”Max Bryant and Jimmy Peirson came in last game and they have had great performances at Big Bash level already. There is no reason they can’t do the same tomorrow.”An unknown quantity is the drop-in pitch and how it will play, with the Gabba being prepared for the second Test against West Indies. Heat have a poor record against the Sixers, with five wins and 13 losses.”A lot of us played last year when we beat them at the SCG on their home track, and that is still in our memories,” McSweeney said. “To have a home [decider] would be awesome. Hopefully we can put a good performance out there and host that final next Wednesday.”The wicket will be slightly tricky as a batting group, but we have a sell-out in front of a Queensland home crowd.”The 24-year-old is regarded as one of Australia’s brightest batting prospects and is ready for the responsibility of being skipper in the absence of Khawaja and Munro.”As a kid I was always captain of the junior teams coming through, and when you are not captain you are thinking like a captain,” McSweeney said. “I have plenty to learn and I have tried to be a sponge learning off Colin Munro, Jimmy Peirson last year and Usman Khawaja. Hopefully I can do a good job and contribute to a win.”

'They are relentless!' – Leah Williamson sounds warning to England team-mates as Lionesses prepare to face 'disciplined' Sweden in Euro 2025 quarter-finals

The UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 quarter-finals have set the stage for a thrilling encounter as England are set to lock horns with a formidable Sweden side on Thursday evening in Zurich. And the Lionesses, captained by Leah Williamson, know they will be facing one of the most consistent and dangerous teams in football.

Sarina Wiegman’s squad bounced back from an opening loss to France by hammering the Netherlands and Wales in their remaining group stage fixtures, but the challenge ahead promises to be a whole new level. Sweden arrive at the quarter-finals in top form, having dominated Group C with three consecutive wins. Their emphatic 4-1 triumph over Germany in their final group match turned heads across Europe, further cementing their status as a tournament powerhouse.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Since 2017, Sweden have reached the quarter-finals in every major tournament, a feat only matched by England and France. Their record includes six wins from their last seven Euro matches, the only blemish being a 4-0 loss to England in the semi-finals of Euro 2022.

  • WHAT WILLIAMSON SAID

Speaking ahead of the tie, Williamson was full of admiration for Thursday's opponents. She acknowledged Sweden’s consistency and discipline, suggesting that they don’t always get the praise they merit.

"Sweden's previous results at tournaments are incredible. They are relentless when it comes to tournament football," said Williamson.

"Maybe 'disrespectful' is too strong a word, but I do think they deserve a little bit more recognition. When you have a team who work for each other like Sweden, then you don't need to necessarily have a crazy standout threat because everyone plays their roles. They are hard to prepare for in that sense. The discipline for them all to complete their jobs on the pitch makes them a dangerous side."

The Red Devils have been linked with the World Cup-winning goalkeeper for some time, with efforts to bring him on board at Old Trafford said to have been stepped up. For now, Martinez has returned to pre-season training at Villa.

That may not be the case for long as , the biggest newspaper in Argentina, claim that Martinez has “everything ready” to trade the West Midlands for the North West of England. They consider a deal to be “close”.

It is also claimed that Martinez has a €25 million (£22m/$29m) release clause in his contract. Said fee would see the enigmatic 32-year-old become a bargain addition for United. They are, however, willing to pay more than that figure in order to reach an agreement that suits all parties.

With the Red Devils reluctant to part with a fee up front, as is often the case with release clauses, they are prepared to sweeten the deal for Villa by increasing the terms and spreading payment over a number of instalments. That approach will also allow them to fend off rival interest from Turkey and the Saudi Pro League.

Ellis, Wade and McDermott help Hurricanes end disappointing season with win

Hobart Hurricanes salvaged some pride at the end of another disappointing BBL campaign, holding off Melbourne Stars by seven runs at the MCG.Like Stars, Hurricanes entered their final match of the tournament on Monday night without a chance of qualifying for the finals after Adelaide Strikers sealed the last spot in the top four with victory over Sydney Thunder the previous night.Beau Webster (55 not out in 43 balls) and Marcus Stoinis (48 in 32) looked a chance of pushing Stars past Hurricanes’ 187 for 8. But Stars’ hopes faded when Stoinis was out to Chris Jordan in the 18th over, and Stars finishing their 20 overs on 180 for 4.After being sent in to bat, Hurricanes flew out of the blocks courtesy an 86-run opening stand between Matthew Wade (63 in 41) and Ben McDermott (50 in 35). The stand was broken on the last ball of the tenth over. Hurricanes then regularly lost wickets for the remainder of their time at the crease, falling short of what they had looked like reaching.Stars allrounder Dan Lawrence collected 4 for 35 – the second four-wicket haul of his T20 career – with his gentle right-arm spin to boost Stars’ prospects.Matthew Wade scored 63 off 41 balls to finish the season•Getty Images

Hurricanes captain Nathan Ellis had an eventful night, but proved crucial in his team securing their fourth win of the campaign. After smashing 16 from five balls batting at No. 9, Ellis dropped two catches in the first two overs of the Stars chase, appearing to hurt his ribs after putting down one chance when he fell on the ball. But Ellis (2 for 29) pushed through the pain barrier to continue bowling, dismissing opener Thomas Rogers for 10.The match completely swung in Hurricanes’ favour when Ellis bowled Glenn Maxwell (32 in 18) after the Stars captain had threatened to produce a trademark match-winning knock.Once perennial BBL title contenders without ever winning the tournament, Stars missed out on the finals for a fourth straight season. Since they lost the 2019-20 final to Sydney Sixers, Stars have finished seventh, sixth, last and fifth.Hurricanes’ record isn’t much better – they have made the finals just once in the last four seasons.

Chaudhary's fifty in vain for Hurricanes as Heat win thriller

Heat moved to 14 points with the win and are now assured of a finals berth

AAP07-Jan-2024
Brisbane Heat have beaten Hobart Hurricanes by one run to remain undefeated and wrap up a BBL finals spot in a rain-interrupted low-scoring thriller at the Gabba. The Hurricanes needed 13 runs from the final over and three off the final delivery, but skipper Nathan Ellis could manage just a single off the last ball as Pat Dooley was run out.The Hurricanes restricted the Heat to 132 for 7 but were soon 22 for 4 in reply. Rain forced the players off after 4.4 overs and the target was revised to 118 from 16 overs.Heat late-over specialist Spencer Johnson (2-21 off three overs) took two wickets in the penultimate over, including the dangerous Tim David (27 off 21).Hurricanes allrounder Nikhil Chaudhary (55 off 38) walloped a six and four from the opening two deliveries of the final over before falling to Heat seamer Paul Walter, who kept a cool head when the pressure was on.The Heat had the perfect start with the ball.Michael Neser had Caleb Jewell (4) caught at third man in his first over. Player of the Match Xavier Bartlett (3-30) then dismissed Macalister Wright and Sam Hain for ducks with consecutive deliveries with both batters nicking superbly directed away cutters.Corey Anderson (two) was cleaned up by a rampant Bartlett and the Hurricanes were on the ropes. They finished on 116 for 9 after David and Chaudhary almost got them home.Earlier Heat skipper Colin Munro top scored with 56 from 47 deliveries as Ellis rotated his bowlers superbly to prevent the hosts from getting away. After Ellis had won the bat flip, the Hurricanes’ seamers contained the Heat well in the early overs on a Gabba pitch that had plenty of zip in it.Riley Meredith, Ellis (2-23 off four) and England international Chris Jordan (3-19 off four) were all impressive. Jordan was in the zone and cleaned up Matt Renshaw (5) with a fast and straight ripper.Munro took a while to find his timing but when he did it was worth the wait with the New Zealander taking 20 runs from spinner Chaudhary’s second over, including two towering leg-side sixes. The Heat moved to 14 points with the win and are now assured of a finals berth. The Hurricanes are fifth on six points, two points behind fourth-placed Melbourne Stars who have played one more game.
