Former West Indies batter Miles Bascombe has been appointed as Cricket West Indies’ (CWI) new director of cricket on a three-year contract. Bascombe will take over from Jimmy Adams, who leaves the position after six years. Bascombe, 37, played one T20I for West Indies in 2011, and was the men’s selector at CWI between 2019 and 2021, and the technical director at the Windward Islands Cricket Board over the last two years”Following a thorough recruitment process, Miles stood out to the panel with his skills, experience and intimate knowledge of our cricket system, especially at Territorial Board level,” CWI CEO Johnny Grave said in a board release. “His passion and understanding of the game at all levels are outstanding. He is a critical thinker with a strong analytical and strategic mindset, which will be hugely beneficial to us as we embark on formulating our new four-year strategic plan. The Herons shared the spoils with the Egyptian giants in a chaotic opening to FIFA's hallmark club tournament
Lionel Messi hit the post twice, and his goalkeeper saved a first half penalty at the other end, but neither side found the net as Inter Miami and Al Ahly opened the Club World Cup with a 0-0 draw that certainly didn't lack excitement.
"We fought until the end. We showed great character," head coach Javier Mascherano told DAZN after the match.
It was very much a tale of two halves, the Egyptian giants dominating the first, before Miami took over in the second. Still, a crucial moment of quality never arrived, and the teams settled for what might be an agreeable point.
Al Ahly should have taken the lead early, but Oscar Ustari made back-to-back saves after well-crafted moves from the Egyptian side. The veteran Argentine was called upon a third time after 32 minutes, making an instinctive stop from a free header to keep things level. Trezeguet had a chance to take the lead shortly before the half with a penalty after being fouled by Telasco Segovia, but Ustari came up with another massive moment – denying him from the spot.

woke up in the second half. They looked like a far more disciplined unit after the break, with Lionel Messi at the center of it all. The Argentine orchestrated the remainder of the proceedings. He came close midway through the second half, curling a free kick just outside the post.
Miami had further chances. Fafa Picault forced a wonderful save out of the keeper. The Al Ahly keeper provided again in stoppage time, denying first Messi and then Maxi Falcon from back-to-back corners.
"Obviously, we wanted to win, because we know how important it is to start with a win. But I am happy with the performance of the team," Mascherano said.

Goalkeeper & Defence
Oscar Ustari (8/10):
Made a few ridiculous saves in the first half and stopped a penalty to keep his side in it. Wonderful in goal.
Ian Fray (7/10):
Outrun and outmatched for half an hour, but settled in thereafter.
Maxi Falcon (6/10):
Chaotic and frenetic throughout. Came up with some big tackles, yet also almost cost his side on numerous occasions due to some woeful positioning.
Tomas Aviles (5/10):
Did an excellent job of trying to get himself sent off. Deservedly removed at the break after turning in a night to forget.
Noah Allen (6/10):
A tidy performance on the left, as Al Ahly had little joy down his wing.

Midfield
Federico Redondo (7/10):
Work rate cannot be questioned. The loss of Yannick Bright wasn't too badly felt.
Sergio Busquets (6/10):
Easily bypassed in the midfield in the first half. More in control after, and linked up with Messi.
Telasco Segovia (5/10):
Gave away a mind-numbingly silly penalty, which was pretty much his only impact on the game. Fortunate that Trezeguet missed.
Tadeo Allende (5/10):
Not his best showing. Didn't really get involved until after the break and went off without making too much of an impact.

Attack
Lionel Messi (8/10):
Absolutely clattered on a couple of occasions in the first half. Ran the game in the second and was unfortunate not to score a winner.
Luis Suarez (6/10):
Showed a few moments of quality, but was otherwise sparingly involved.

Subs & Manager
Marcelo Weigandt (6/10):
He wasn't exactly composed, but Miami was better defensively with his influence after the break
Benjamin Cremaschi (5/10):
Didn't offer much other than fresh legs.
Fafa Picault (N/A):
Had a strong chance in front of goal but saw his header tipped over the bar late.
Javier Mascherano (6/10):
Watched his side get absolutely battered in the first half. Got a much better performance out of them in the second, and will feel that his team deserved three points.
Glasgow Rangers supporters haven’t had much to shout about this season. Victories over Fenerbahçe and then Celtic before the international break were just brief respites in what has been an otherwise dismal campaign.
The emergence of Hamza Igamane has perhaps been one of the brightest aspects of the whole season, with the summer signing settling into life in Glasgow with ease.
His performances have attracted plenty of attention from afar, meaning he could leave the Ibrox side sooner rather than later.
Why Hamza Igamane could leave Rangers
For a transfer fee of just £1.7m, Igamane moved from Morocco to Glasgow last summer, a move which certainly raised a few eyebrows.
Fast-forward several months into March 2025 and the striker has since scored 14 goals across 37 appearances for the Gers, including a stunning last-minute winner against Celtic last week.
Similar in stature to Alfredo Morelos, Igamane is much more flexible, being able to operate as a number ten or even out wide if so required by the manager.
He was recently called up to the senior Morocco squad for their matches against Niger and Tanzania, making his debut against the former on Friday.
With Everton showing interest in the youngster, he could turn out to be the club’s next big sale.

If that happens to be this summer, whoever arrives as the new manager will have some work to do to source a replacement.
They might have money to spend in the summer transfer window, but in terms of a long-term replacement, might Josh Gentles be the ideal solution?
Rangers already have their next Igamane
Gentles has made his way through the academy at Auchenhowie over the years before finally signing his first professional contract with the Gers in February 2023.
He scored the winner in the Scottish Youth Cup final during the 2023/24 season and has impressed for the U18s and B teams over the previous 12 months.
One popular Rangers fan media podcast said that Gentles was “making waves in the B team” when he turned 17 last September, also stating that the striker had a “big future ahead” for the Light Blues.
In January, the teenager joined Alloa Athletic on a six-month loan deal in order to gain some vital senior football and the move has worked a treat.
Across seven games for the League One outfit, the centre-forward has already scored twice while chipping in with an assist.
It only took him two games to open his account for the Wasps and he could turn out to be a great signing for the third-tier side.
This experience lower down the divisions will allow him to find out what it is like playing against men who might well be twice his age, giving the striker a chance to build up his confidence and strength.

The 17-year-old still has plenty of development to do, but if he keeps scoring, a chance for Rangers might not be too far away.
Ferguson has struck gold on Rangers star who nearly left in January
Barry Ferguson may have hit the jackpot with this Rangers star who was the subject of a bid in January.
As Manchester United prepare for a first summer window under the Ruben Amorim regime, the club will no doubt be looking to learn a lesson from the woes of his predecessor on the transfer front.
The common thread of Erik ten Hag’s recruitment was the desire to acquire players the Dutchman was already familiar with, having signed off on a raft of Ajax-linked deals following his arrival in 2022.
Indeed, in came the likes of Antony, Lisandro Martinez, Andre Onana, Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt, presumably with the aim of trying to replicate the title-winning success he had enjoyed in Amsterdam.
Erik ten Hag
Bizarrely, however, Ten Hag proceeded to state that his United team “can’t play like Ajax”, as he has “different players”, a moment that perhaps signified the downward spiral of his Old Trafford tenure.
As for Amorim, the Portuguese coach appears steadfast in sticking to his philosophy and principles no matter what, with there set to be no compromise on his 3-4-3 setup – no matter the players available to him.
The unique nature of his tactical approach may lend itself to going back to Sporting CP to poach a handful of ready-made, key figures, although one player who won’t be enjoying a reunion with the 40-year-old anytime soon is Geovany Quenda.
How Man Utd can overcome Quenda blow
The Athletic’s David Ornstein had reported back in January that United were considering a summer swoop for the Sporting teenager, with the 17-year-old having been handed his first-team debut in Lisbon by Amorim earlier in the campaign.
Sporting CP's GeovanyQuendain action
A winger by trade, the Portuguese sensation had been re-tooled as a wing-back in Amorim’s high-flying side, with it having been no surprise to see links emerge with the youngster, amid the need to acquire specialised assets in those wide berths.
As it is, Quenda is set to remain with his current side for the 2025/26 campaign, before linking up with Chelsea next summer, with the Blues forking out a reported fee of £40m to win the race for his signature.
United will then have to look elsewhere to bolster their options on the flanks, albeit while having already acquired a promising talent of their own in the form of Patrick Dorgu, with the young Dane arriving from Lecce in January.
Meanwhile, the Red Devils do have academy star, Harry Amass, to call upon, with the Englishman making his senior debut last time out, while Diogo Dalot has begun to show flashes on the right flank, after scoring in the 4-1 win over Real Sociedad, having also teed up Bruno Fernandes against Leicester City.
Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes celebrate
With Luke Shaw – who hasn’t started a game since February 2024 – still sidelined, options in those wide berths remain somewhat limited, however, although perhaps Amorim could soon have his next Quenda to work with, following the signing of Diego Leon.
Man Utd have already signed Amorim's next Quenda
Cherry-picking the odd player from Sporting, rather than following Ten Hag’s method too closely, may represent an astute move, yet it would have still represented a real gamble to fork out £40m on a 17-year-old prospect.
In The Pipeline
Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.
Those funds could be better served elsewhere – not least in acquiring a striker like Viktor Gyokeres – with United having already signed a teen superstar of their own, for a fraction of the cost.
As was reported during the January window, the Red Devils wrapped up a bargain £3m deal to sign the aforementioned Leon from Paraguayan side, Cerro Porteno.
An attack-minded left-footer, like Quenda, the teenager is set to link up with the Premier League outfit this summer, when he turns 18, having already scored three goals in 25 games at senior level.
While the Paraguay U20 international has typically operated at left-back to date, he does seemingly boast the credentials to operate at left wing-back, or even as an inverted option, like Quenda, on the opposite side.

What particularly stands out regarding the 5 foot 10 ace is his relentless speed, having been lauded for his “explosive” quality by analyst Ben Mattinson, who also noted that he “runs like a steam train”.
Also described as a “deadly attacking threat”, what Mattinson also highlights is that – much like Quenda – he is “essentially a winger/wingback played out of position”, showcasing that forward-thinking nature even further.
Of course, he may be less of a plug-and-play option like the more senior Dorgu, yet Amorim could view Leon as being his next teenage project, having enjoyed brief, early success with Quenda – four goals and assists chalked up by the youngster in just 18 games under his watch.
The £3m man may need time to bed in, but having been signed on the cheap, it could represent a low risk move, following in the footsteps of the £1.5m capture of Ayden Heaven from Arsenal.
It is still early days, but perhaps INEOS are beginning to find value in the market once again at Old Trafford.
Forget Heaven: Man Utd must unleash teen CB who's a homegrown Branthwaite
Manchester United could have their own Jarrad Branthwaite already in this terrific young ace.
Jaiswal’s captain was impressed by the temperament he showed while playing the longest innings by an India Test debutant
ESPNcricinfo staff14-Jul-2023India captain Rohit Sharma has hailed Yashasvi Jaiswal for the temperament he showed while scoring 171 on debut in the Dominica Test against West Indies. The 21-year-old Jaiswal was adjudged Player of the Match after India wrapped up victory by an innings and 141 runs late on the third evening.Jaiswal’s innings, lasting 501 minutes and 387 balls, was the longest by an India Test debutant, and Rohit watched a large part of it from the other end during an opening stand of 229.Related

Ashwin's seven-for sews up India's innings win
“He’s got the talent,” Rohit said of Jaiswal. “We knew about it. He’s shown us in the past couple of years that he’s ready for this big stage. Came and batted sensibly, showed a lot of patience, and the temperament was tested as well – at no stage [did it look] like he was panicking or going away from his plans, which was good to see.”Rohit, who experienced scoring a century on Test debut against West Indies a decade ago, said all he told Jaiswal during their partnership was that he belonged at the Test level.”In the middle, it was just about having a chat, letting him know, ‘You belong here.’ That is the most important thing, because when you’re playing your first Test match, you kind of keep asking yourself whether you belong here or not, but my job from the other side was to just keep telling him, ‘You’ve done all the hard yards, it’s just about enjoying your time in the middle. Don’t worry about the results, just enjoy your time, and if you do that the results will flow.'”Paras Mhambrey, India’s bowling coach, also heaped praise on Jaiswal, particularly for his application as per the conditions.”The way he batted was fabulous, Mhambrey said of Jaiswal’s innings. “It was a slow wicket and got slower as the game progressed, stroke-making wasn’t easy. If you look at the way he’s batted earlier, he’s the kind of guy who likes to take on the game, likes to play his stroles. But the way he applied himself on that wicket was very good to see. That’s what you need at the international level, to be able to adapt to different conditions and situations, and that was expected by the team. He did the role for the team so it’s definitely very heartening and positive to see. This performance will give him a lot of confidence and hold him good going ahead.”India had two debutants in Dominica, the other being the keeper-batter Ishan Kishan who spent 145.2 overs waiting for his turn to bat, and only got to spend seven overs at the crease before Rohit declared. The declaration came two balls after Rohit had indicated from the dressing-room balcony that it was imminent. That early warning gave Kishan just enough time to work Alzarri Joseph off his hip for a single and get off the mark in Test cricket, off the 20th ball he had faced.”I was just letting them know that we probably have an over or so and then we’re declaring,” Rohit said. “I just wanted Ishan to get off the mark, because he had probably played close to 15-20 balls without getting off the mark, so I wanted to tell him, get your first runs in Test cricket and then we have to declare.”I can understand, playing your first Test match, you have a lot of nerves going around, and I could see, he was sitting there in the dressing room, entire [second] day, wanting to go out to bat, so I know the feeling, but I was just letting him know that we probably have an over or two and then we’re going to declare.”On a pitch with slow but sharp turn, the biggest match-winners, inevitably, were R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, who shared 17 of the 20 wickets India took, with Ashwin claiming match figures of 12 for 131, his best in overseas Tests.”The results speak for themselves,” Rohit said of the two spinners. “Both of these guys have been doing it for a while for us now. They know exactly what is expected out of them. There’s not much to tell them [about] what we need to do. It’s just about going to them and giving them that freedom to go and express, because that is when they’re doing their best for the side as well.”When you have the kind of experience that these guys have, bowling on pitches like this, it’s always a luxury, but yeah, you’ve got to come out and pitch it in the area that you want, and get the pitch to do the rest. Both Ashwin and Jadeja were magnificent in the game, especially Ashwin. To come out and bowl like that shows his class.”Mhambrey didn’t fall short of calling Ashwin “one of the greatest match-winners” India has produced.”He has been one of the greatest matchwinners from India, he’s right up there,” Mhambrey said. “The way he has won us so many matches can’t be praised enough. He has been performing for so many years, I can’t even put it into words.”

Botafogo defeat Seattle Sounders 2-1MLS side victim of two defensive errorsBrazilian side fight off late comebackWatch every FIFA Club World Cup game free on DAZNStream nowAFPTELL ME MORE
Botafogo opened their 2025 FIFA Club World Cup campaign with a 2-1 win over the Seattle Sounders on Sunday evening at Lumen Field. The Brazilian side capitalized on two first-half defensive errors, and while the Sounders mounted a late push, they couldn’t avoid a disappointing home loss.
It's a big result for the Brazilian side, who had to withstand a late rally from the home side.
"First half was okay, but the second half we didn't cope with the intensity of the opponent," Botafogo manager Renato Paiva told DAZN after the match. "It was not a very good game for us, but the first game in these competitions is always difficult because of the anxiety and all of that. Three points, we won… It's most important."
Left back Nouhou Tolo committed a needless foul 28 minutes into the match, and off the ensuing free kick, Botafogo scored the opener. A phenomenal ball from former international Alex Telles was delivered in the box, and 20-year-old Jair Filho smashed home to give them a 1-0 lead. Then, on the brink of halftime, current Brazil international Igor Jesus doubled their lead, scoring the eventual winner. The 24-year-old striker smashed home another header for the Brazilian side, but Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei appeared to be caught off-guard, as he was flat-footed as he dove towards what appeared to be a saveable attempt.
After a poor first-half showing, the MLS side looked reinvigorated in the second half, having most of the momentum throughout the final 45 minutes – but their early deficit was too much to overcome. Midfielder Cristian Roldan, who was a member of the 2022 FIFA World Cup squad with the USMNT, did earn them a goal back in the 76th minute – but nothing else arrived, despite numerous chances.
"Yeah, obviously exciting to be the first to score in a Club World Cup in our stadium. I mean, what an unbelievable experience.." Roldan said, reflecting on his goal. "We felt like we deserved more. We shot ourselves in the foot, letting two goals in in the first half, and an incredible performance, I think, from our team. We showed a lot of resilience."
Botafogo sit second in Group B at the end of the day, trailing Ligue 1 side PSG in first, while the Sounders sit third above Atletico Madrid – though both are on zero points, and Seattle's spot ahead is due to criteria points. Roldan hopes his team will show improvement when it hosts Atleti on Thursday.
"Intensity was there [against Botafogo]," he said. "The intensity was great. Mentality was great. Once we're down 2-0, we have nothing to lose, right? I hope to see that in our next game."

The Sounders are the only MLS team to ever win the CONCACAF Champions League. In 2022, they claimed victory in the competition, which clinched their berth in the Club World Cup.
Botafogo, meanwhile, clinched a spot after defeating Clube Atlético Mineiro in the 2024 Copa Libertadores final.

Igor Jesus: The Brazil striker scored a splendid header for their second goal of the evening, but over the course of the entire first half, he was an absolute menace in the final third of the pitch. He kept the Sounders defense busy, rotating across the entire back line, while being the key figure for the Brazilian club in transition.

Nouhou Tolo: The Sounders' veteran committed an egregious error on the opening goal, seeing yellow for a foul that led to the free kick assist for Botafogo's opener, and was hooked at halftime as a result.
Just a terrible cameo for the Cameroon international, who has often been a reliable defender for the MLS franchise over the years. An evening to forget for the 27-year-old.
Rangers and new prospective owners the 49ers Enterprises have their eyes on a versatile young target from Germany, according to a new report.
Rangers and 49ers planning for summer incomings
The Gers have been impressing since the departure of Philippe Clement and the arrival of interim boss Barry Ferguson.
The lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership may well be too big of a gap to close down, but Rangers are still in the Europa League and recently got the better of Celtic at Parkhead for the first time in five years while also producing a come from behind win at Dundee last time out.
As a result, Ferguson is being linked with keeping the Rangers job on a permanent basis, and according to older brother Derek, is keen on remaining at Ibrox.
“This is a different kettle of fish now. I took him to Rangers as a boy. The club is ingrained in him. There’s only one conclusion: He wants the job but will need to win games”, said Ferguson on his younger brother.
Prospective new owners the 49ers are likely to have a big say in who gets the role, and they also have exciting plans in the transfer market.
The 49ers may back Rangers with a £20-25million budget this summer, once a takeover is completed, and some of that cash could be used on making Vaclav Cerny’s loan a permanent transfer.
Rangers have the option to buy Cerny for just £5.5m until the end of May, and the 49ers are aware of the conditions of a full-time deal.
Elsewhere, there have been plenty of Ibrox exit rumours doing the rounds, including Nicolas Raskin attracting the interest of Aston Villa and Leeds United, whereas Everton are still keen on landing forward and Glasgow derby hero Hamza Igamane.
It promises to be a busy few months off the pitch at Rangers, and now, a new target has come onto the radar.
Rangers eye move for new versatile German player Niehoff
According to reports in Italy, relayed by Sport Witness, Rangers are eyeing up Holstein Kiel’s Niklas Niehoff. It is claimed that the Gers have been monitoring Niehoff during his loan spell at Osnabruck alongside interest from Serie A side Udinese and Bundesliga outfit Union Berlin.

Holstein Kiel could end up selling Niehoff amid interest all across Europe, with offers potentially arriving in the coming weeks. The 20-year-old, should he move to Scotland with Rangers, would provide an extremely versatile option to whoever is in charge at Ibrox.
