"Great" Leeds absentee steps up recovery and could now feature against QPR

With their sights set on promotion, Leeds United are set to be handed the boost of a returning player when they square off against Queens Park Rangers this weekend.

Leeds recieve fresh injury boost

There may have been a sigh of relief around Elland Road when Leeds overcame Millwall to win 2-0 and instantly got back to winning ways after suffering shock defeat against Portsmouth just days before. Back on track, Daniel Farke’s side now sit two points above second placed Sheffield United and four clear of Burnley in third with just nine games left to play in the Championship.

Those in Yorkshire will be more aware than most that it’s not done until their place in the Premier League is confirmed and, as ever, they face a nervous final stretch towards potential promotion.

With nine finals remaining, Farke will need to use the quality of his squad more than ever. It is a side full of talent, from the likes of Manor Solomon – who has rediscovered his best form – to important midfielder Ao Tanaka. Now, that side must simply hold their nerve.

What will undoubtedly help them do just that is the boost of recent injury news. As revealed by Farke, Isaac Schmidt is now set to make his return against QPR after returning to training. The defender missed the victory over Millwall through illness but has seemingly since recovered in time for this weekend.

Speaking to reporters about his side’s injury status, Farke said: “As it stands I hope I have that whole group plus Isaac Schmidt to pick from for the travelling squad.

“In terms of the starting line-up and who has recovered, we’ll make some late decisions. This turnaround is a bit more tricky. We had more or less 80 hours to recover for Millwall, this time around just over 60 hours. It will be a bit more tricky. Travelling is involved of course.”

Every player counts for Leeds in vital run

Whilst Schmidt hasn’t been one to steal the headlines throughout the current campaign, often watching on from the bench, he could be thrust into Farke’s side at any given moment and he, like others, must help the Whites in their push for promotion.

Having arrived in the summer, Schmidt has found himself at the centre of Farke’s praise even whilst playing a cameo role. The former Norwich City boss told reporters earlier this season: “Great guy, a bit like I mention also about all our new signings.

Isaac Schmidt for Leeds United.

“I think still at a really good age because he is more likely still on his way up the hill in his career. Great mentality, also desperate to play for the shirt, desperate to play for us, great character, so really nice guy and really nice team-mate.”

Now back from a brief absence, Schmidt will no doubt have his sights set on putting every minute that he does receive to good use as he aims to leave his mark on Leeds’ promotion push.

49ers Group have a "dream appointment" to succeed Barry Ferguson at Rangers

Incoming Rangers owners 49ers Enterprises are believed to have a “dream appointment” as Philippe Clement’s long-term successor, according to a new update.

Rangers plotting permanent managers after Ferguson

The Gers have started life under interim boss Barry Ferguson in positive fashion, with the former Ibrox favourite a popular appointment earlier this week, following the unsurprising sacking of Clement last weekend.

It proved to be a memorable first game in charge for Ferguson, with Rangers overcoming a 2-0 deficit to win 4-2 away to Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premiership on Wednesday evening, thanks to Vaclav Cerny’s opener, a Cyriel Dessers double and a Nedim Bajrami strike.

It would be a surprise if the 47-year-old remained in charge of the Gers beyond the end of the season, though, with a more proven manager needed to come in, in order to narrow the gulf between themselves and rivals Celtic, heralding the start of an exciting new era at the club in the process.

A host of names have been mentioned in recent days, including Kevin Muscat, Ashley Cole and Derek McInnes, but it looks like another name is at the top of Rangers’ wishlist, following a fresh update.

49ers have "dream appointment" at Rangers

According to a new report from Football Insider, 49ers see Steven Gerrard as the “dream appointment” to come in as Rangers’ next permanent manager this summer. The Gers’ next owners will have a major say as to who Clement’s long-term replacement at Ibrox will be, and they want to bring the 44-year-old back to the club at the end of the season.

Former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard enjoyed a successful period in charge of Rangers during his first stint, memorably winning the Scottish Premiership title in 2020/21, which has been an all-too-rare occurrence at Ibrox this century.

In fact, the Liverpool legend had a big admirer in Ferguson at the time, who heaped praise on the job he was doing with the Gers back in 2019: “When the new campaign kicked off I was crossing my fingers and toes in the hope Gerrard might be able to make a decent fist of this fight.

“Now though the whole game has just been changed. I look at Davis and Defoe joining the camp in Tenerife and I think, ‘Here we go!’ Overnight a team that went into the shutdown with a chance of taking Celtic all the way now looks like one that truly believes it will. Like a proper Rangers team should.”

49ers can forget Ferguson by hiring new Rangers boss who's wowed Guardiola

With Philippe Clement having been sacked, Rangers are searching for a new long-term successor, so could it be a manager ‘approved’ by Pep Guardiola?

Granted, Gerrard’s reputation in management has been hampered a little after being sacked at Aston Villa and having a forgettable spell in Saudi Arabia in Al-Ettifaq, but he is still a young coach, and if 49ers see him as the best option, they need to be trusted.

Gujarat Titans seek winning streak and success at home

Mumbai’s batting looks settled but they need their bowlers to step up

Moody: Mumbai should give Arjun Tendulkar another chance to finish games

Big picture: Rohit Sharma vs Hardik PandyaRohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan vs Rashid Khan. Hardik Pandya vs Jofra Archer. Wriddhiman Saha vs Piyush Chawla. Well, it’s also Rohit versus Hardik, only the second time in the IPL. The only two Indian players in this competition who have tasted success on their debut season as captains will go head-to-head in Ahmedabad on Tuesday.Mumbai Indians lost their first two matches, clinched their next three games in a row, before going down to Punjab Kings in a high-scoring game. They sit at the seventh position with six points whereas Gujarat Titans are fourth on the table with eight points. And after four weeks, it’s tough to pick a favourite between them.Mumbai are a batting-heavy side, with their top-six batters striking at more than 140 in this season. With Cameron Green and Suryakumar Yadav showing results in the last few matches, Rohit will be content with their middle order that also includes the aggressive Tilak Varma and Tim David. However, the same can’t be said of their bowling department. Chawla has bowled the most for Mumbai, has picked up the most wickets (nine) and his economy rate (6.86) is also the best for his side (minimum two games). But the rest of the lot – who have played two or more matches this season – has leaked more than nine runs per over.On the other hand, Titans have fared well in bowling, thanks largely to Mohammed Shami and Rashid. Both have combined to take 22 of the 40 wickets Titans have taken in six games. Mohit Sharma is back and has been bowling at a stunning economy rate of 4.66 from nine overs.Even though Titans return to their home ground, they have lost two of the three games there in IPL 2023. In fact, their defeats have only come at home. In the batting line-up, Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha, despite not clicking as an opening pair, have performed as individuals. However, despite the likes of David Miller and Hardik chipping in, Titans have struggled to score freely in the middle overs. At 7.37 runs per over, they have one of the lowest run rates among all teams from overs 7 to 15. If not fit to play, Williamson could be a New Zealand team mentor at the ODI World Cup

Chapman is in the frame for the World Cup, says Stead, while Guptill could well be in the fray, too, if Williamson doesn’t make it

Deivarayan Muthu26-Apr-2023Kane Williamson could still travel to India for the ODI World Cup later this year, with the team management open to roping in the injured batter as a mentor for the tournament. At the same time, New Zealand head coach Gary Stead has refused to rule Williamson out of the World Cup as a player just yet. After suffering a ruptured Anterior Cruciate Ligament in his right knee in the opening game of IPL 2023, Williamson returned home from India on crutches and subsequently underwent surgery, which was deemed a success. Williamson’s knee is still in a brace as he undergoes rehab.”Look, it’s still far too early to know,” Stead said ahead of the five-match ODI series in Pakistan. “He’s had the operation and, to date, what we know, that’s been successful. So he is in the very, very early stages of his rehab programme.Related

How Williamson takes the power away from the big moments

“It’s obviously pretty non-weight-bearing at this stage, and he’s in a brace. So, it’s really just meeting milestones as we go. Our line around Kane, at the moment, is still it’s unlikely that he will be available, but we certainly don’t want to rule out a person of his class and calibre, and the things he brings to this team, too early in case there is that chance still.”Yeah, absolutely [would take him to India as a mentor].”The ODI World Cup is likely to start on October 5 and end on November 19, with 12 Indian cities shortlisted as venues for the tournament, but the official itinerary is yet to be released. Usually, the ICC announces World Cup schedules at least a year in advance, but this time it has also been waiting for the BCCI to get the necessary clearances from the Indian government. The wait for the schedule has somewhat disrupted New Zealand’s long-term planning.”It [schedule] is not out yet, so there’s not much we can do about that,” Stead said. “So it does keep our options reasonably open without knowing the venues and who we are playing at different venues.”So, it does make it pretty difficult to finalise plans right now. But that again just gives players opportunities, that are within the squad now, to come out here [in Pakistan] and play for New Zealand.”Mark Chapman and James Neesham stunned Pakistan with their century stand in the final T20I•Associated PressMark Chapman is in the World Cup frameIn the absence of Williamson and a number of first-choice New Zealand players, Mark Chapman emerged from the fringes and hit an unbeaten 104 off 57 balls, helping his team gun down 194 to square the T20I series 2-2 in Rawalpindi. Chapman was then added to New Zealand’s ODI squad and is also in the frame for the ODI World Cup, according to Stead.Chapman has played just five ODIs for New Zealand since he made his debut for them in the format in 2018.However, he is a fine player of spin, which in a lot of ways is to do with him playing more in Asian and subcontinental conditions during his formative years with Hong Kong.”The [T20I] series result itself was fantastic for the team, if you consider the number of players that are at the IPL” Stead said. “And we were playing a full-strength Pakistan team – a team that made the T20 [World Cup] final. So, to get a two-all result against them and play the way we did, especially in the last T20 game, was fantastic.”The Mark Chapman-James Neesham partnership was really, really significant. Obviously, it wasn’t the best of starts with the bat, but the composure the two of them showed in that situation was brilliant. It was not just one knock about Mark Chapman why he was added to the ODI squad, but there is a lot of competition for places and it’s not so much about the competition, but it’s how we keep building towards the World Cup. And Mark Chapman is one guy who is in our thoughts around that.”Martin Guptill was the top scorer for Quetta Gladiators in the recent PSL•PCBIs there a way back for Martin Guptill?Martin Guptill has given up his NZC contract and is now a free agent, but Mike Hesson, the former New Zealand coach who is currently with Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL, believes Guptill could be another candidate to slot into Williamson’s place in the ODI team because of his experience. Guptill was in action in PSL 2023, where he was the top scorer for Quetta Gladiators with 310 runs in nine innings at an average of 38.75 and strike rate of just over 150.”I think World Cups do require experience and I think Martin Guptill is one of those guys that has always turned up at World Cups,” Hesson said on recently during a chat with Logan van Beek. “I think he would be very much in their thinking and the ability for [Devon] Conway to either stay at the top or bat at No. 3 depending on which other player stands up and says: ‘Look, I must be included’.”I don’t think the World Cup is a time where you want too many new faces. You want to intersperse the talented youngsters amongst some experience. Missing Kane… that diminishes that experience significantly. So, that’s where Martin Guptill comes back into the mix. He has obviously performed well in some T20 tournaments around the world recently and in particular the PSL.”

Avesh, Stoinis help LSG pull off season's lowest defence

On a slow Sawai Mansingh Stadium pitch, Lucknow Super Giants spoiled Rajasthan Royals’ homecoming in a game of middling totals by defending 154, the lowest total successfully defended this IPL.Playing in Jaipur after almost four years, Royals restricted Super Giants to 154 for 7. In response, they were 89 for 1 after 12 overs, needing 66 from the remaining eight. But Marcus Stoinis and Avesh Khan used the slowness of the surface to their advantage by banging the ball in the middle of the pitch to make run-scoring difficult.

Rahul fined for Super Giants’ slow over-rate

Lucknow Super Giants captain KL Rahul was fined INR 12 lakh for his team’s slow over-rate. It was Super Giants’ first offence of the season. They also faced the on-field penalty and had to bowl the 20th over with just four fielders outside the 30-yard circle.

As the asking rate mounted, so did the pressure on the Royals batters. With 48 required from four overs, Ravi Bishnoi conceded just six in the 17th. In the next over, Devdutt Padikkal picked up three fours off Stoinis to keep Royals in the contest but Naveen-ul-Haq bowled an excellent 19th over, giving away just ten and leaving 18 to defend for Avesh.Riyan Parag started the final over with a four, followed by a leg-bye, before Avesh dismissed Padikkal and Dhruv Jurel on successive deliveries to seal the result.

LSG’s scratchy start

The recent record in Jaipur was in favour of the chasing sides, and Sanju Samson duly opted to bowl. Even though Trent Boult couldn’t pick up a wicket in the first over this time, he started with a maiden to KL Rahul. With just 14 runs on the board after three overs, Rahul walked at Sandeep Sharma and punched him uppishly towards extra cover, where Yashasvi Jaiswal put down a straightforward chance. Later in the over, Rahul got another life when he pushed one to the right of Jaiswal and took off. Jaiswal intercepted with a dive but missed a direct hit, and Rahul would have been out by a yard.In the next over, Rahul had a third life: he miscued Boult, but Jason Holder, having settled under it after running back from mid-off, failed to hold on. With Kyle Mayers also struggling to score freely, Super Giants finished the powerplay on 37 for 0 – the lowest wicketless powerplay total this season by a distance.

A flicker from Rahul and Mayers, but nothing more

It was only after the powerplay that Rahul and Mayers really tried to increase the tempo. They were successful too for a while. Mayers launched Holder for a six in the eighth over and Rahul finished it with a four. In the next over, Yuzvendra Chahal was in the firing line. Mayers started by hitting a six and four off successive balls before Rahul slog-swept the legspinner for another six.3:27

Were Rajasthan Royals left surprised by the slowness of their ‘home’ ground?

With Super Giants 74 for no loss after nine overs, the platform was set. However, the next nine overs brought them just 55 runs with the loss of four wickets. Rahul was the first to depart, chipping Holder to long-on for 39 off 32. The experiment to send Ayush Badoni at No. 3 didn’t work either; the batter deflected a scoop off Boult onto his leg stump in the next over.In the 13th over, Mayers struck back-to-back fours off Chahal, and brought up his half-century off 40 balls. But R Ashwin’s double-strike from the other end to remove Deepak Hooda and Mayers kept the lid on the scoring rate. And despite Nicholas Pooran hitting Holder for two fours and a six in a 17-run 19th over, Super Giants just crossed 150.

Jaiswal keeps Royals afloat

Royals started their chase slowly and were 23 for 0 after four overs despite Yudhvir Singh leaking 16 in the second. By the end of the powerplay, though, they had more than doubled their score. A misfield by Mayers gifted Jaiswal a boundary on the first ball of the fifth over, bowled by Yudhvir. Three balls later, Butter – on 5 off 14 until then – smashed a 112-metre six.In the last over of the powerplay, Jaiswal and Buttler hit Avesh for three fours, the second of those a slash from Jaiswal that burst through Naveen’s hands at short third.Still, Buttler was going slower than a run a ball, and it was Jaiswal who kept Royals afloat. The two added 87 in 11.3 overs; Buttler’s contribution in that was only 35 off 35.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Stoinis and Avesh turn it around

Royals were moving towards their target with little fuss when Stoinis ended the opening stand with Jaiswal’s wicket, who steered one low to Avesh at short third. The next two overs brought two more wickets; Samson was run-out and Buttler holed out to deep midwicket off Stoinis for 40 off 41.With 56 needed from six overs, and Padikkal and Shimron Hetmyer in the middle, Royals were still the favourites. Naveen leaked just five in the 15th, resulting in the required rate going past ten for the first time in the chase. Hetmyer tried to take on Avesh but was caught at long-on, only for 2. That turned the game in Super Giants’ favour, and from there on, they didn’t give Royals any chance.

Ronaldo hints at Al-Nassr exitFuture at Saudi club now unclear Forward told to head to ArgentinaFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

After scoring in Al-Nassr's final game of the season, Ronaldo sent the rumour mill into overdrive by posting a cryptic message on social media that appeared to suggest he is set to wave goodbye to the Saudi Pro League side. He wrote on Instagram: "This chapter is over. The story? Still being written. Grateful to all."

Ronaldo had already been linked with a move this summer and there has been speculation he could sign for a club participating in the Club World Cup. Former Argentina goalkeeper Jorge D'Alessandro has, rather optimistically and perhaps with slight tongue in cheek, now urged Boca Juniors to try and sign Ronaldo and has told chairman Juan Román Riquelme to bring the 40-year-old to the club.

WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

Jorge D'Alessandro told El Chiringuito: "It gives me goosebumps… Directing Boca's attack? Boca needs him. He's going to the land of Leo Messi, Diego Maradona and Hugo Gatti… imagine that! Let Riquelme try it, please! I see him more at Boca than at a Brazilian team. He identifies more with a need, also because of his personality, because of the way he plays… That vertigo that Boca has, next to Zenón, next to Merentiel… I'm going crazy!

"Boca is truly in an institutional crisis, it is a ship adrift. I think Ronaldo would arrive as a balm for Boca, as well as a chance to improve their footballing level. And for him, it would mean that Argentina would pay homage to him in the place of the greatest, indirectly Messi and directly Maradona.”

Perfect for Amorim: Man Utd now main suitors for "special" £80k-a-week star

With INEOS looking to shape Manchester United in Ruben Amorim’s vision, they’ve reportedly joined the race to sign an attacking midfielder who was just denied a place on Thomas Tuchel’s England squad.

Man Utd named as most interested suitor in English star

Whilst their Europa League thrashing of Real Sociedad handed Old Trafford a much-needed positive in midweek, there’s still plenty of work to do if Manchester United are to turn things around. And that work should start in the transfer market.

INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe simply must sign the players Amorim is desperately crying out for to suit his system, having already welcomed Patrick Dorgu in pursuit of doing just that in the January transfer window.

Now, when the summer arrives, the Red Devils will aim to overhaul the squad that Erik ten Hag left behind even further before welcoming some fresh faces to kickstart a new era once and for all.

On that front, a number of names have already threatened to steal the headlines, including one who would be perfect for Amorim. According to Caught Offside, Manchester United have now joined the race to sign Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest this summer following his excellent season at the City Ground.

Joined by Manchester City, Arsenal and others, those at Old Trafford would be completing quite the coup if they managed to sign Gibbs-White this summer and are named as the most interested party. Ratcliffe will hope that the lure of Manchester United hasn’t worn away just yet and his side can use their big name to jump ahead of rivals.

"Special" Gibbs-White suits Amorim's system

When looking around the Premier League, there’s not many attacking midfielders who have enjoyed a better season that Gibbs-White. The 25-year-old has been pivotal in Nottingham Forest’s shock push for Champions League qualification and it should come as no surprise to see the likes of Manchester United keeping an eye on his every move.

Despite such an impressive season, however, the £80,000-a-week star has still not found into Tuchel’s first England squad in what is a decision that has split opinion. Instead, the former Chelsea manager opted to recall the likes of Jordan Henderson, signalling further shock and confusion around the Premier League.

There’s no doubt that Gibbs-White’s time will come though. Previously dubbed “special” by Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo, the attacking midfielder is no longer just knocking on the door, he’s threatening to boot it off its hinges.

Whether a move to Manchester United would speed things up on that front remains to be seen, but he’d certainly suit Amorim’s system. The former Sporting boss has been forced to experiment with his personnel in recent months, swapping between the likes of Christian Eriksen, Bruno Fernandes, Joshua Zirkzee and Alejandro Garnacho in the two attacking midfield roles.

Fernandes aside, all have failed to live up to expectations in a role that is arguably built for an attacking midfielder of Gibbs-White’s calibre.
