English duo Lyth and Eskinazi sign with Perth Scorchers

Defending BBL champions Perth Scorchers have signed English duo Adam Lyth and Stephen Eskinazi after losing Phil Salt, Laurie Evans and Mitchell Marsh for the season.Scorchers have also signed Western Australian left-arm wristspinner Hamish McKenzie to round out their squad ahead of starting their title defence against Sydney Sixers next Saturday.Lyth is a direct replacement for Salt after he was withdrawn from the BBL due to a shoulder injury at the same time Marsh was ruled out. The Yorkshire and Northern Superchargers top order batter gives Scorchers a badly needed left-handed option in the top order after they were unable to secure long-time overseas player Colin Munro in the overseas draft.Lyth, like fellow Scorchers signings Faf du Plessis and Tymal Mills, is only available for the first half of the BBL. Du Plessis is headed to the SA20 league in January while Lyth and Mills have both signed for Desert Vipers in the new ILT20 in the UAE, also to be played in January. Lyth has a Perth connection having played half a summer of grade cricket in 2011-12 for Scarborough.Related

Eskinazi, who is captain of Middlesex’s T20 side and has been building an excellent T20 record in England, is available for the whole BBL having long-time ties to Perth and WA cricket. Eskinazi grew up in Perth and played junior and grade cricket at Claremont-Nedlands alongside fellow Scorchers Matt Kelly and Nick Hobson, and Hobart Hurricanes duo Joel Paris and Tim David. The versatile batter, who can also keep wicket, has returned to Perth to play grade cricket this summer and has posted scores of 80 and 85 for Claremont-Nedlands in recent weeks.McKenzie, 23, is a long-term wristspin option having grown up playing alongside Cameron Green at Scotch College and grade club Subiaco-Floreat. He has been dominant in grade cricket in the last two summers and took figures of 2 for 27 in a T20 practice match against India prior to the T20 World Cup, including the scalps of Hardik Pandya and Dinesh Karthik.Perth Scorchers squad: Ashton Agar, Cameron Bancroft, Jason Behrendorff, Cooper Connolly, Faf du Plessis (South Africa), Stephen Eskinazi (England), Cameron Green, Aaron Hardie, Peter Hatzoglou, Nick Hobson, Josh Inglis, Matt Kelly, Adam Lyth (England), Hamish McKenzie, Tymal Mills (England), Lance Morris, Jhye Richardson, Ashton Turner, Andrew Tye

Philadelphia Union announced today that they will host Mexican club Atlas F.C. in an international friendly at Subaru Park on Saturday, June 7 at 7:30 p.m. ET.

The match will be part of Atlas’s preseason campaign as they prepare for both the Leagues Cup and the Apertura 2025. The Guadalajara-based side, now under the leadership of former Atlanta United head coach Gonzalo Pineda, is looking to bounce back after a disappointing Clausura 2025 in which they finished 14th and failed to qualify for the playoffs – marking a rough start to Pineda’s tenure.

This will mark Atlas F.C.'s second visit to Subaru Park. The previous encounter in Chester took place on April 4, 2023, when the Union secured a 1-0 win in the second leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinal, advancing to the semifinals on aggregate.

In the upcoming Leagues Cup, Atlas will compete in a challenging group alongside Inter Miami, Orlando City, and Atlanta United. Their tournament opener is scheduled for July 30 against Inter Miami, also known as.

While no other preseason friendlies or player signings have been officially announced by the club, Atlas recently confirmed the appointment of Aníbal Fájer as the club’s new sporting president. The move is seen as a key step toward restructuring the team after several seasons without significant success.

One bright spot for Atlas has been the emergence of Montenegrin striker Uroš Đurđević, who finished the Clausura 2025 as the league’s top scorer with 12 goals – the first time in the club’s history that an Atlas player has claimed the Liga MX golden boot.

Gary Ballance released by Yorkshire in bid for fresh start in wake of racism case

Batter will not play Championship cricket for another county in 2023 season

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Dec-2022Gary Ballance, the former England batter, has been released from his contract with Yorkshire, after requesting the chance for a fresh start to his career following the damaging revelations that emerged during the club’s racism scandal last year.Ballance, the former club captain, played 23 Tests, as well as 16 ODIs, between 2014 and 2017, scoring four centuries at an average of 37.45 that compared favourably with many of England’s other middle-order selections in that period. However, he was heavily implicated in Azeem Rafiq’s explosive testimony during the DCMS parliamentary hearings in Westminster last November, after his use of the racial slur “P**i” had been deemed to be “banter” in the initial report into allegations of institutional racism at Yorkshire.Ballance, who was born in Zimbabwe but was educated in England, claimed in mitigation that the word had been used in the context of a friendly relationship between the two players, with Rafiq referring to him as “Zimbo” in return. However, earlier this year, he met Rafiq in person to apologise. He has not played for Yorkshire since the end of the 2021 season, having taken a lengthy break from cricket to manage his mental health, during which time he has been supported by the club. However, with his contract due to run until the end of the 2024 season, he has agreed he will not play for another County Championship team in the 2023 season. A return to playing in Zimbabwe – and potentially putting himself forward for international selection – is his likely next step.He is one of seven Yorkshire players and staff to be charged by the Cricket Discipline Commission in relation to the racism case, although the hearing has been postponed to the new year following a series of appeals.Related

“It has been a privilege to play for this great club,” Ballance said. “On a personal level, I have gone through a challenging period – and after much discussion I decided, together with my family, that it would be right to make a change. I asked the club if it was willing to release me from my contract, and I am grateful for its understanding as we have reached agreement.”The support Yorkshire has given me off the pitch over the past year has been fantastic and I am appreciative of the club’s help, but I hope that my decision will mean that my career can have a fresh start.”Darren Gough, managing director of Yorkshire cricket, said: “We are sad to see Gary go, but he leaves with our best wishes. He has been a mainstay of our side for many years, and a superb batsman. As a club, we recognise that the last 18 months have been difficult for Gary, for numerous reasons, and the most important thing for him is to get better and play again. He felt he could not do this at Headingley, and we agreed to his request reluctantly but knowing that it was the right decision for him personally.”

Tottenham will attempt to sign £70m England star who Real Madrid pushed for

Tottenham Hotspur will attempt to sign an England star who Real Madrid were pushing to sign last year, with chairman Daniel Levy and technical director Johan Lange showcasing some ambition already before the summer transfer window.

Erling Haaland’s eventual winner proved the difference between Ange Postecoglou and Pep Guardiola’s sides, but the former still found positives to take away from the 90 minutes, despite it being their fourteenth top flight loss of the campaign.

“Yeah I think so. First half we were just a little bit too eager to get forward with the ball,” said Postecoglou on Tottenham’s positive second-half against Man City.

“I thought we were really wasteful and when you are (like that) against City it allows them to get into a rhythm of their game. They can pick you off at different times and we just didn’t handle that part of the game well. They scored and had a couple of good chances to get further ahead.

“I certainly felt second half we dominated the game and territory. We were pretty relentless. Much better with the ball and a lot calmer but just missing a goal and ultimately fell short.

“It did look more like us today. At least from my perspective. We were really relentless. We played aggressive football. We took it to a very good opponent. We never tapered off at all. If anything, like you said, bringing the guys on made us stronger towards the end of the game. Disappointing to lose but I think you see the benefit of us being refreshed and going into a game well prepared. That level of performance in the second half, if we can begin to get consistent with that then we will be able to push on.”

Overall, it’s been a disappointing second campaign in charge for Postecoglou, who is relying on a good run in the Europa League to end Tottenham’s 17-year trophy drought.

Preparations are already underway to bolster the squad ahead of next campaign, with Tottenham believed to be targeting a new centre-back this summer.

Tottenham set to attempt move for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite

According to CaughtOffside, Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite is on their transfer shortlist in that regard, following the Lilywhites’ repeated shortages at centre-half throughout 2024/2025.

Everton's JarradBranthwaitein action with Manchester United's Harry Maguire

Tottenham are ready to rival Man United in the race for Branthwaite this summer, as per this report, and it is believed even Real Madrid were once pushing to land the England international, though a move failed to materialise.

The 22-year-old will apparently command a price tag of around £70 million, though, so Levy will need to invest heavily in his acquisition. That being said, he currently stands out as one of the country’s most promising centre-backs.

“Branthwaite has been outstanding,” said Jamie Carragher last year. “I think this lad is pretty special. He’s a big part of why Everton in my eyes have a good chance of staying up, him and his partnership with [James] Tarkowski.”

Club showing "substantial interest" in "flamboyant" 20 y/o Sunderland ace

A foreign club are reportedly eyeing the signing of a “flamboyant” Sunderland attacking player in the next two weeks, according to a new transfer claim.

Latest Sunderland news

The Black Cats may have dipped a little after a magnificent start to the season, but it has still undoubtedly been a positive campaign to date, with Regis Le Bris’ side sitting fourth in the Championship table.

While automatic promotion is looking increasingly unlikely, due to the consistent nature of Leeds United, Burnley and Sheffield United, a place in the playoffs looks almost guaranteed at this point, barring a dreadful run of form to end the season.

Sunderland'sJobeBellingham

Whatever happens in the coming months, Sunderland will need to bolster their squad in the summer transfer window, ensuring freshness is added for Le Bris. Ahmet Gürleyen has been linked with a switch to the Stadium of Light, with the Hansa Rostock centre-back considered a strong option to bring in.

On the injury front, the Black Cats are still without the likes of Enzo Le Fee and Dan Ballard, among others, and perhaps most disappointing is the fact that loan signing Jayden Danns may not feature at all for the remainder of the campaign, having returned to Liverpool for treatment on a back issue.

Club keen on signing "flamboyant" Sunderland ace

According to TaToTake [via Sport Witness], FC LNZ Cherkasy are keen on signing Sunderland attacker Jewison Bennette, showing “substantial interest” in him. They have two weeks to get a deal over the line until the Ukrainian transfer window closes on March 11th, so the Black Cats must decide if they are willing to part ways so soon, either on loan or permanently.

Bennette has been a non-existent figure for Sunderland this season, only making one appearance in all competitions – a nine-minute cameo in the 2-0 defeat away to Preston North End in the EFL Cup back in August.

For that reason, the Black Cats may think that selling the 20-year-old in the next few weeks makes the most sense, even though he has been described as “flamboyant” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Bennette has only registered two goals and assists apiece in 21 appearances for Sunderland overall, which is a fairly disappointing return for an attacking player, and most importantly, Le Bris doesn’t appear to see him as an important part of his plans.

The young Costa Rican is out of contract at the Stadium of Light in 2026, which also highlights the importance of moving him on this year, in order to still receive a decent fee for him.

Sunderland now eyeing summer swoop to sign 25 y/o defender in bargain deal

The Black Cats could make their move…

ByTom Cunningham Feb 21, 2025

If Sunderland allow the clock to tick down until the end of next season, they could end up losing Bennette on a free transfer, which would be negligent when they have the chance to sell him now.

Brighton eye bargain move for "goal threat" whose value could soar to £60m

Brighton & Hove Albion are now eyeing a bargain summer move for a “real goal threat”, who has been tipped to be capable of playing in the Champions League.

Brighton's inconsistent form

It has been a mixed start to life in the Premier League for Fabian Hurzeler, having led his Brighton side to some memorable victories, defeating Manchester City and Manchester United, but they have also been on the receiving end of some disappointing losses.

A 7-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest was the low point of the season so far, but Hurzeler’s side have since returned to form, winning their last three matches in all competitions.

As such, a push for Europe is still on the cards, but it looks unlikely at this stage, meaning the Seagulls may want to inject some extra quality into their squad at the end of the campaign to boost their chances next season.

Brighton & Hove Albion manager FabianHurzeler

Albion have developed a reputation for buying promising youngsters before selling them on for a huge profit, with the likes of Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister making a name for themselves at the American Express Stadium.

Ahead of the summer transfer window, Brighton have now been linked with what could be a similar type of move, with SportBILD reporting they are among the clubs in the race to sign Hertha BSC attacker Ibrahim Maza.

A whole host of Premier League clubs are said to be vying for Maza’s signature, with his price set to drop in the summer, having previously been valued at over €20m (£17m).

That figure is set to be halved due to a clause in the Algeria international’s contract, meaning he could be available for roughly £8m, but it may be difficult to get a deal done, given the level of interest.

Maza is one for the future

The 19-year-old only featured sporadically in the Bundesliga II last season, but he has really kicked on this term, amassing five goals and four assists in the German second tier, having primarily been utilised as an attacking midfielder.

During his time playing youth football, the teenager was also deployed at centre-forward and left-wing, so he could be a versatile option for Hurzeler in attack, should Albion be able to get a deal done.

The signing of Stefanos Tzimas demonstrated the pulling power the Seagulls have, given that there was widespread interest from some top Premier League clubs, so there is certainly a chance the Algerian ends up at the American Express Stadium.

Scout Ben Mattinson thinks the attacker will move to a club of Brighton’s stature to develop his game initially, at which point his value could soar, leading to interest from Champions League clubs.

Of course, if Maza does go on to become a top player, Hurzeler will be hoping to keep hold of him, but Brighton’s model relies on buying up-and-coming players before selling them for profit, and this seems like it could be a similar type of deal.
