After Luis Palma: Celtic must cash in on £15k-p/w man who Rodgers loves

The January transfer window has officially been open for almost two weeks and Celtic are yet to dip into the market to recruit a new signing for their squad.

They have reported interest in Lazio forward Gustav Isaksen, Brondby striker Mathias Kvistgaarden, and Sarpsborg winger Sondre Orjasaeter, which suggests that there is work going on behind the scenes to improve the team.

However, there will also be players to move on from Parkhead. Stephen Welsh has already completed a short-term loan move to the Belgian side Mechelen, and he could soon be followed out of the door by Luis Palma.

The Honduras international is reportedly closing in on a move away from the Scottish giants, which could become permanent in the summer window.

Why Celtic are right to move Luis Palma on

According to Estadio Deportivo, Rayo Vallecano and Celtic have reached an agreement to send the winger on loan to the Spanish side until the end of the season, with an option to make the deal permanent for a fee of around £2m.

Brendan Rodgers has sanctioned a transfer for the former Aris star and it is one that seems to make sense for all parties involved, due to his lack of game time on the pitch this season.

Despite moments of quality, as shown in the clip above, last season, Palma has struggled to break into the team in the Scottish Premiership this term, with seven appearances and one start in the division.

He now has the chance to go out and play regular football and Celtic have the opportunity to recoup some money for his services in the summer, if Rayo Vallecano decide to make the move permanent.

After this deal for Palma goes through, the Hoops must also ruthlessly cash in on left-back Greg Taylor, who has attracted interest this month.

Why Celtic should sell Greg Taylor

The Scotland international is out of contract at the end of the season and is reportedly wanted by Turkish side Trabzonspor and is being eyed up for a January switch by Dinamo Zagreb.

This means that there are interested clubs at the table and there could be a deal to be done if the Hoops are willing to negotiate, which could see them recoup a bit of money for Taylor instead of losing him for nothing in the summer.

Allowing the Scottish left-back to leave this month would also provide current Barcelona left-back Alex Valle to step up and showcase his quality on a consistent basis.

As you can see in the table above, the Spaniard has provided assists more frequently as a starter in comparison to Taylor, whilst creating more chances per game on average.

Celtic are also reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Kieran Tierney on a free transfer at the end of the season and the Arsenal outcast could be viewed as the eventual long-term replacement for Taylor, whilst Valle can replace him in the short-term.

Therefore, Rodgers has the options at his disposal to go without the £15k-per-week defender in the short and long-term, which is why he should sanction a sale for the dud this month.

The Northern Irish boss did, however, make it clear how much he appreciates the full-back. He described Taylor as an “amazing” player and criticised sections of the Celtic fanbase for singing about Tierney, suggesting that it was disrespectful.

Imagine him & Orjasaeter: Celtic hold talks over exciting Kyogo replacement

Celtic are reportedly interested in a deal to sign the centre-forward to replace Kyogo Furuhashi.

ByDan Emery Jan 13, 2025

Rodgers clearly respects and loves what the defender brings to the group but moving him on now, with the other options available and his contractual situation, could be the right move to make.

Sam Northeast triple-century puts Glamorgan back in touch

Unbeaten 308 and 306-run, third-wicket stand with centurion Ingram has visitors 21 behind Leicestershire

ECB Reporters Network22-Jul-2022Sam Northeast, seen by many as one of the best English players never to taste international cricket, notched the first double-century of his career and converted it to only the second triple-hundred in Glamorgan history as his side closed day three of their LV= Insurance County Championship match on 563 for 5 in reply to Leicestershire’s 584.The 32-year-old eclipsed his previous best of 191 for Kent against Derbyshire in 2016, finishing on 308 not out – just one short of matching Steve James’s 309 not out against Sussex at Colwyn Bay in 2000 as the highest first-class score by a Glamorgan player. He shared a 306-run partnership for the third wicket with Colin Ingram, who made 139, comfortably beating the Glamorgan record against Leicestershire of 242 set by Steve James and Matthew Maynard in 1995, and another of 229 – unbroken so far- for the sixth with Chris Cooke (71).Northeast could have been out on 96 – missed at slip – while Cooke was dropped twice as Leicestershire, for whom Chris Wright took three for 74, missed a number of opportunities to take hold of a match that now looks likely to end in a draw.”There were times when they bowled really well and you had to ride that,” Northeast said. “I gave a chance on 96 but managed to survive that and battled for a bit. After that I began to feel it was a situation where I could get to 200 but 300 was never in my wildest imagination and a dream come true in a lot of ways.”We were in a situation in the game where we needed to take time out of the game, to keep batting and get past the follow-on target, so that was my main priority but, yes, the double hundred was a thing that needed ticking off in my career. I’ve made some big hundreds before without getting a double so there was a bit of relief to get over the line. Once we had avoided the follow-on we were able to express ourselves and have a bit of fun at the end and the runs kept flowing.”It was a strange year in 2021 after deciding to leave Hampshire and then playing on loan for two different counties but I feel I’ve found a real home at Glamorgan and I couldn’t be happier.”Northeast and Ingram completed their centuries in a morning session in which both could have been out without reaching three figures, each in turn missed by the normally reliable Colin Ackermann in the slips.Ingram, on 77, edged a ball from Ackermann’s compatriot, Wiaan Mulder, that went between his legs at second slip, while Northeast should have gone to the ball that saw him go to 100 with his 16th boundary, an edge flashing past Ackermann’s right shoulder as the only slip to spinner Callum Parkinson. On each occasion, Ackermann was left clasping thin air.Ingram completed his century from 75 deliveries when he drove Ben Mike square of the wicket for his 14th boundary. Glamorgan were 242 for 2 at lunch.Spinners Parkinson and Ackermann bowled for almost an hour in tandem at the start of the afternoon, without making any inroads, but when Mulder returned at the pavilion end, things began to happen.Ingram almost played on to his fellow South African on 138, picking up only one run more before Mulder found just enough movement to induce an edge, Harry Swindells diving low to his left to take a good catch. The wicket broke the partnership at seven short of Glamorgan’s third-wicket record against any opponent. The new ball was available in the next over, which Leicestershire took immediately despite Mulder’s success with the old one. The decision was vindicated when a testing five-over spell by Wright was rewarded with wickets from consecutive balls as Kiran Carlson was bowled off an inside edge, driving, before Billy Root edged to second slip, where Ackermann – no doubt to his own relief – took the catch.Having grabbed three wickets for 29 in 10 overs, with Glamorgan still 101 runs away from avoiding the follow-on, Leicestershire sensed an opportunity, yet the session ended in more frustration for Mulder as Swindells dropped Cooke on three – a much easier chance than the one he had held earlier – which would have sent Glamorgan in at tea on 341 for 6.Cooke escaped for a second time soon after tea, dropped by Louis Kimber at second slip on 15, again off the suffering Mulder. Having profited from Glamorgan’s laxness in the field, Leicestershire seemed oddly determined to pay their opponents back in kind.Glamorgan were only too pleased to accept their generosity, the next passage of play seeing them match Leicestershire with five batting bonus points shortly before Northeast reached the 200-mark with his 22nd boundary as he drove Parkinson handsomely down the ground. The follow-on was avoided as the total passed 435 in the same over as the Northeast-Cooke partnership moved into three figures. With Leicestershire’s bowlers looking understandably weary, Northeast’s third hundred came off just 74 balls, completed when he cut Ackermann for the 37th or his 38 fours so far.

Australia look to test their T20 limits in Commonwealth Games, World Cup double bid

Ash Gardner: “We are really confident of being able to set any type of score and chase any down”

Australia will look to push their boundaries in the T20 game with the format dominating the schedule over the next eight months, starting with the historic Commonwealth Games appearance at the end of July then building towards the defence of their T20 World Cup in South Africa in February 2023.The team, under new interim head coach Shelley Nitschke following Matthew Mott’s departure for the England men’s white-ball job, get back on the road next week when they head to Ireland for a tri-series involving the hosts and Pakistan which will provide preparation for the Games in Birmingham. While there has been significant change in the coaching staff – Ben Sawyer has also moved to coach New Zealand – the playing group remains the same as the one which secured the ODI World Cup in New Zealand. Australia’s dominant performances in that competition, where they went unbeaten and capped it off by scoring 356 for 5 in the final against England, were another example of how they have pushed themselves to new levels and it’s something they want to continue.Related

“We’ve certainly spoken about it,” allrounder Ashleigh Gardner told ESPNcricinfo. “We haven’t really come to conclusions on what that total is that we are looking at, but I think 160 in most games, five or six years ago, would win you pretty much every match, where now because the women’s game has grown so much, 160 is a good total but it’s also chaseable.”I think we are probably looking at that as a minimum then if we try to push the boat out for 180 and be really clear how we want to chase those totals as well. With the side we have, we are really confident of being able to set any type of score and chase any down.”Shelley Nitschke has taken over the head coach role from Matthew Mott, but Australia’s overall philosophy is unlikely to change too much•Getty Images

Since January 2018, Australia have an average scoring rate of 8.37 when batting first in T20Is (which for a full 20 overs would equate to 167) while overall their figure is 7.90 runs per over. They twice scored 226 in that period (against England and Sri Lanka) and in the last T20 World Cup final they made 184 for 4 against India, but perhaps just as significant was their chase in the first Ashes T20I against England in January when they hunted down 170 with three overs to spare.”It’s something we have spoken about as a group and also within our skill groups as well, in terms of how do we get that little bit better and push the boundaries that little bit more than we have in the past,” captain Meg Lanning said. “We have got a couple of things we have been working on both as a team and individually as well.”It is going to look and feel slightly different with Shell in charge as opposed to Motty. But both [have] similar messaging in terms of how we want to play the game, take the game on, we certainly want to go out there and be aggressive and play with a lot of freedom.”On a personal level, Gardner is looking to tailor her game to the big challenges ahead which is two T20 prizes and the need to rejuvenate Sydney Sixers in the WBBL after missing the finals for the last three seasons.”Within in the Australia set-up it’s more like an enforcer role, whether it’s late in the innings, or to break open the game, or put the icing on it,” she said. “How I execute it each game will be different with the situation, but it’s about just having a really clear and simple mindset in those roles. They are quite challenging at times because people expect a lot of you to score boundaries as soon as you get out there.”The squad has had two training camps in Brisbane leading into heading overseas which has been a chance for everyone to settle in under Nitschke’s watch. A permanent appointment will not be made until later in the year although she remains the favourite.”I know the type of people who will probably apply for the job. Many coaches would want to be associated with our team because of how successful we’ve been and the players in there,” Gardner said. “Shell’s a great candidate as well, I’m really excited for her over this next little period, just being able to be the head coach with no real pressure of those job interviews and things like that. Hopefully we can put on some good displays of cricket for her and showcase what kind of coach she is.”And there’s the chance for a bit of history. “I know [the Commonwealth Games] is not something anyone thought they’d probably ever be involved in,” she said. “It’s going to be quite a cool experience to go over there and be part of Team Australia, and it not just be the cricket world but the whole sporting nation.”

Man Utd join race for Casemiro upgrade who’s "one of the best" in the PL

Manchester United’s investment has often been wasted under Erik ten Hag, with the Dutchman splashing the cash on players who simply aren’t up to the level of the Premier League.

Antony is the prime example of a talent who’s not good enough for a team pushing for the top four in England’s top division, subsequently falling down the pecking order under Ruben Amorim.

The Brazilian cost a whopping £86m back in the summer of 2022, with real expectations of transforming the club’s attack, but has since failed to deliver – only featuring seven times since the 39-year-old’s arrival.

Manchester United'sAntonyduring the warm up before the match

He’s since been touted with a move away from Old Trafford this window, with Real Betis just one of the potential destinations for the attacker, which could allow for funds to be generated.

Should he leave, Amorim could use any money to target one player who’s recently appeared on their radar in recent days.

Man United plot move for Premier League midfielder

According to Football Insider, Man United are keeping an eye on Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes ahead of a potential January deal.

However, they aren’t alone in the race for the 23-year-old, with English rivals Liverpool also in the hunt for the talented youngster this month.

Gomes has featured in 19 Premier League games throughout 2024/25, only missing one match due to suspension – cementing himself as a key player in the West Midlands.

The report claims that both clubs have been spotted scouting the former Flamengo star, subsequently earning him numerous call-ups to the Brazilian national team.

Whilst no fee has been mooted over a potential move to Old Trafford, Vitor Pereira undoubtedly won’t want to part ways with one of his key players, but he could prove to be an upgrade on a player currently plying his trade in the North West.

Why Gomes would be an upgrade on Casemiro for Man United

Martin Zubimendi has also been mentioned as another potential name on the Red Devils’ midfield shortlist in recent weeks – looking to provide added quality to Amorim’s side.

However, the emergence of his pending move to Premier League rivals Arsenal has scuppered their chances of landing the Spaniard in the near future.

Undoubtedly, the news about his potential move will spark interest in a move for Gomes, with the compatriot providing competition and an upgrade on current star Casemiro.

The Brazilian joined in a £70m deal from Real Madrid in the summer of 2022 but has rapidly declined in recent months, showing signs that he’s coming to the back end of his career at the top level.

He’s not featured since the Carabao Cup defeat against Newcastle United, looking way off the pace needed at the top level, getting dribbled past once and over ran by the likes of Joelinton and Sandro Tonali.

The Wolves star would prove to be a huge step up from his compatriot, producing countless stats that blow him out of the water – showcasing what a superb addition he would be to the midfield department at Old Trafford.

Gomes, who’s been labelled “one of the best” for pressing, by one analyst, has dominated Casemiro in the aforementioned area, completing more interceptions per 90 – helping the Red Devils massively out of possession.

However, in possession, the Wolves ace has taken things to the next level, averaging more progressive carries per 90, whilst managing double the number of carries into the final third – offering Amorim an increased attacking threat from the middle of the park.

Whilst competition may be fierce for his signature, United must go all out to convince the 23-year-old to move to Manchester, having all of the tools to be a real hit alongside Manuel Ugarte at the heart of the team.

It would also open the door for the club to cash in on the experienced Casemiro, helping shift his hefty wages off the books, further fitting into the current cost-cutting exercise in place at the Theatre of Dreams.

Byrom’s 144 was his second major century in three Championship matches.Meanwhile Northeast, 105 not out, recorded his first hundred for Glamorgan, as David Lloyd and Billy Root both hit fifties.Promotion challengers Glamorgan, the only side to defeat Nottinghamshire in this campaign, started the day leading by 86 runs and quickly pushed on as they posted only their second century opening stand of the season. With Lloyd working hard to re-establish his red-ball form, Byrom reached his century just before lunch off 154 balls, a lofted straight six off Liam Patterson-White the highlight.Notts finally got some reward in the over before lunch as Lloyd edged a drive off Brett Hutton to slip for 60 with the partnership worth 172.Colin Ingram (33) and Byrom added 76 before Notts finally stemmed the flow as both fell in successive overs to Patterson-White.Byrom’s innings, including 21 fours and with a healthy strike-rate of 70 runs per 100 balls, followed his recent 176 against Sussex to continue his solid start in a new role at the county. However the stylish Northeast and busy Root made sure the punishment continued despite ultra-defensive tactics from the visitors in the final session, putting nine men on the boundary and bowling wide of the stumps.Northeast added two sixes to his eight fours with his innings coming off just 137 balls, putting on 147 for the fifth wicket before Root (53) top-edged Luke Fletcher to Clarke.Lloyd’s declaration challenged Notts to make their second highest run chase ever, and Michael Hogan claimed an early wicket as he bowled Hameed for one, beating his defensive shot.Middlesex’s defeat at Worcester gives Glamorgan the incentive to go second in the table if they can force home their advantage at Sophia Gardens.

“About the squad and about the next challenge, the only truth I believe is to be focused on the next match. After, we will see what happens.”

While Lopetegui refused to go into too much detail on West Ham’s transfer plans, reports suggest that Real Sociedad star Brais Mendez is a key target for West Ham alongside their pursuit of a new number nine.

It has also been reported that West Ham are serious contenders to sign Evan Ferguson on loan from Brighton, so there are rumoured targets on the agenda at Rush Green, but their need to sell after a summer of high expenditure means it could be a tricky one to navigate.

There are a number of squad members who could be forfeited in an attempt to bolster Lopetegui’s transfer kitty, and one of them is now winger Maxwel Cornet.

West Ham put Maxwel Cornet up for sale after Southampton re-call decision

According to The Athletic, Cornet will be recalled from his loan spell at Southampton, with the Ivorian barely making any matchday squads recently and appearing surplus-to-requirement at St. Mary’s.

West Ham are set to put Cornet up for sale once he returns to London, two and a half years after his £17.5 million move from Burnley, and the east Londoners could be hoping to recoup at least some of that fee in an attempt to raise cash.

Maxwel Cornet for Southampton.

The 28-year-old was a star player for Burnley in the 2021/2022 season, finishing that Premier League campaign as their top scorer with nine league goals, but it appears he’s failing to rediscover that form behind the scenes.

“Cornet is quick and direct. He could help them get behind,” said the late Kevin Campbell about Cornet back in 2022 (Football Insider).

“Cornet is a runner. He gets in behind and stretches teams. I think that is essential. He is a handful off the bench.”
