Centuries from Nick Jewell and Brad Hodge put Victoria in a powerful position on the first day of their match against South Australia in Adelaide. They put on 190 runs for the second wicket as Victoria went to stumps at 2 for 352 with Hodge unbeaten on 100 and David Hussey on 8. It proved to be a luckless day for the home side, which had gone into the game looking to overturn the one-day loss to Victoria on Sunday.Chris Rogers, playing his initial first-class match for Victoria having moved from Western Australia, combined with Jewell for a strong 139-run opening stand after the stand-in captain Hussey chose to bat. The pair began confidently on a lifeless pitch and Jewell in particular was harsh on the South Australia attack, which featured Shaun Tait in his first taste of first-class cricket in nine months.Jewell, who likes to joke about having only a couple of shots in his repertoire, showed more aggressive instincts than usual and struck 28 fours in his 164. His most recent previous innings for Victoria was 99 in last season’s Pura Cup final and this time he reached triple-figures with a quick single following a lofted drive over mid-on that took him to 99.Rogers continued to justify Victoria’s investment in him after he opened the season with 60 in Sunday’s one-day game. He fell on 63 when he edged behind off Paul Rofe, having already survived a chance that was put down by Tom Plant at slip. The removal of Rogers was one of the few bright spots for South Australia, who then had to deal with Hodge. He took 14 balls to get off the mark but was hardly troubled by any of the bowlers. He provided the perfect foil for Jewell as Victoria looked to be heading towards a mammoth first-innings score. The only other celebration for the Redbacks came when Rofe bowled Jewell in the 81st over with the score on 329.Mark Cleary was unlucky not to have Hussey for a duck just before stumps after an edge flew between the wicketkeeper and first slip. Hodge brought up his century in the penultimate over of the day with a casual flick through midwicket on a day which clearly belonged to the visitors.

Warriors secure lead despite Lambert's five

Grant Lambert’s first five-wicket haul in first-class cricket was not enough to stop Western Australia securing a handy first-innings lead of 88

Cricinfo staff11-Oct-2008
ScorecardGrant Lambert’s first five-wicket haul in first-class cricket was not enough to stop Western Australia securing a handy first-innings lead of 88. After bowling the Warriors out for 265, New South Wales lost a couple of wickets but their batsmen fared comparatively better than they did in the first innings, ending at 2 for 62 with Greg Mail on 24 and the nightwatchman Beau Casson on 1.Resuming their overnight score of 3 for 106, the Warriors lost their captain Marcus North first thing in the morning, trapped lbw to his opposing number Dominic Thornely. Adam Voges was Lambert’s first victim of the day, edging to Daniel Smith and the side was in a spot of bother at 5 for 128.However, Trent Kelly and Theo Doropoulos added a crucial 76 to help the Warriors past the Blues’ 177 and secure first-innings points before both were dismissed within four runs of each other after crossing 200. Doropoulos fell within sight of his half-century and his 41, which included eight fours, was the highest score of the innings. Lambert then cleaned up the tail to finish with 5 for 82.It didn’t take long for the Warriors to strike, as Steve Magoffin sent back Phillip Hughes for a duck in the first over. Peter Forrest and Mail showed a lot of patience in constructing a half-century stand for the second wicket and the Warriors had to wait until the 30th over for their second breakthrough, when Forrest edged one to Luke Ronchi off North.

Livramento is already proving a bargain

Southampton’s new signing Valentino Livramento is already proving himself to be a bargain after two impressive appearances in the Premier League.

The 18-year-old, who joined from Chelsea in a deal worth just £5m earlier in the transfer window, earned a surprise start in Southampton’s opening day defeat against Everton at Goodison Park despite Kyle Walker-Peters’ impressive form last season.

The teenage defender kept his place for Sunday’s game against Manchester United at St Mary’s and quickly won over the Southampton faithful with an excellent display.

Livramento featured at right-back in the first half but moved further forward in the second 45 as Hasenhuttl tightened things up. The youngster emphasised his quality going forward with several lung-busting runs down the right-hand side, whilst also helping the Saints earn an impressive draw with his defensive abilities.

Although he had never played a senior game of football before his move to St Mary’s, he has not looked out of place in his two appearances thus far, contributing an impressive 16 recoveries and 15 duels won across the games against Everton and Manchester United.

Only Che Adams and Mohammed Salisu have averaged a higher rating in the Premier League so far this season according to WhoScored, which suggests that the 18-year-old has been an excellent addition to Hasenhuttl’s squad; and at such a young age, he is only going to get better.

Hampshire Live journalist Tom Leach was full of praise for the youngster after the game on Sunday, writing: “The star of the first half, Livramento was excellent. He battled against men with his best moment coming just before the break, racing down the right-wing and putting a ball in for Adam Armstrong. His second-half performance was nearly as strong. He is a very impressive young man.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“594431”]

Considering that he is keeping Walker-Peters out of the team on current form, Hasenhuttl will be delighted with the way that Livramento has started his Southampton career, and the manager will be hoping that the teenage prodigy can continue to improve throughout the season.

Rangers Could Land Palma Alternative In 19 Year Old Gem

Glasgow Rangers require some much-needed attacking reinforcements during the summer transfer window as they aim to fill the void left by Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos.

It won't be easy to replace them, however, Michael Beale is eyeing up a few players in the market who could arrive at Ibrox and make an impression. One such player was winger Luis Palma, who the club were interested in recently, yet reports this week have claimed that the deal is now off as Rangers aren’t willing to pay the £4.5m for the 23-year-old, and it appears as though Beale will now have to move on swiftly.

The 42-year-old may have already found an ideal alternative, with American. Brian Gutierrez being eyed up for a potential move according to the Daily Mail.

The Gers face competition for the teen however as Manchester United are also keeping tabs on him, yet securing a work permit may prove to be a stickler for any potential move this summer.

Could Brian Gutierrez improve Rangers?

The left-winger has enjoyed a wonderful start to his professional career at MLS side Chicago Fire, already racking up 75 senior appearances, registering 13 goal contributions across those games.

His creative talents have certainly been on show during the 2023 MLS campaign as the youngster has created four big chances, made one key pass per game and has succeeded with 1.5 dribbles per match – a success rate of 64% – showcasing all the attributes of a successful winger.

He even made more dribbles than Palma did during the entirety of the 2022/2023 season, while creating the same amount of big chances and failing slightly behind on key passes per game, with Palma managing 1.4, suggesting that the 19-year-old would be a fine alternative.

Honduras forward Luis Palma.

His coach at Chicago Fire, Frank Klopas, has lauded his player as someone who simply “has everything” before stating that he is “good with the ball, his work rate, key passes, ability to beat players, technical ability." And making a move for the winger should be a priority now that Palma is reportedly off the cards.

Gutierrez has plenty of experience for someone so young, and he could further develop his skills in Scotland, as he will be given plenty of game time under Beale if he did join the Light Blues.

With a void to fill on the left flank, the youngster has shown that he means business in the senior ranks and could be a gamble worth taking.

Supreme Court limits BCCI's financial freedom

The Supreme Court of India has directed the BCCI not to distribute funds to its state associations until they comply with the Lodha Committee’s recommendations

Kalra: Supreme Court giving BCCI as much breathing space as it can

The Supreme Court of India has passed an order that limits the BCCI’s financial freedom and power until the board and its state associations comply with the Lodha Committee’s recommendations. In a 25-page order issued on Friday, the court directed the BCCI not to distribute funds to its state associations until they submit affidavits stating compliance with the recommendations to the court and the Lodha Committee in two weeks. The order was passed by a three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice of India TS Thakur and Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud. The court also asked BCCI president Anurag Thakur and secretary Ajay Shirke to meet the Lodha Committee before November 3. They were required to submit an “affidavit of compliance” in the court by December 3, elaborating on the recommendations already implemented by the BCCI and what it had done to persuade the state associations to adopt the recommendations. The court scheduled the next hearing for December 5.BCCI’s financial wings clipped

The Supreme Court has asked the Lodha Committee to oversee financial transactions undertaken by the board by putting in place the following measures:
♢ Appoint an independent auditor to check the income received and expenditure incurred by the BCCI
♢ Fix a threshold value for BCCI contracts which would be overseen by the auditor from the tender stage
♢ Approve or disapprove BCCI contracts above the threshold value and obtain the advice of the auditors on the fairness of the tendering process
♢ Formulate the terms of engagement and reference for the auditors. The BCCI shall bear the costs, charges and expenses of the auditors

In another significant decision, the court asked the Lodha Committee to appoint an independent auditor to verify the BCCI’s accounts. The Lodha Committee was also asked to set a “threshold value” for various contracts the BCCI enters into, and all contracts in excess of that amount would need the committee’s approval. The next major contract for the board is the IPL broadcast deal, set to be finalised on October 25.”I’ve always maintained that we have the highest respect for judiciary. We have welcomed the Lodha Committee recommendations, we more than welcome them because we have nothing to hide,” Thakur told after the order came out. “I’m very optimistic in my approach and I am sure some of the issues that we have requested for a re-look will be addressed. We are not fighting against anyone. All I have been saying is that there is confusion regarding certain recommendations. I am sure a dialogue can be had in the interest of the game.”Friday’s order is the second one issued this week by the court, after an interim order on October 17 in response to the Lodha Committee’s status report, which had recommended that the BCCI office bearers be “superseded” and a panel of administrators be appointed because the board was impeding the implementation of the court-approved recommendations. In its order the court noted that there was “substance in the status report”. It also said the BCCI was in “breach” of the July 18 court order that had approved the majority of recommendations in the Lodha Committee’s report and asked the board and states to implement them in four to six months. “Implementation of the final judgment of this Court dated 18 July 2016 has prima facie been impeded by the intransigence of BCCI and its office bearers,” the court order said. The court said that “at this stage” it was refraining from approving the Lodha Committee’s suggestion to supersede the BCCI office bearers because the board had said in a submission to the court that “it would make every genuine effort to persuade the state associations” to comply with the recommendations. The BCCI’s position had been that it could not implement the Lodha Committee’s recommendations without a majority of its state associations agreeing to do so. The key recommendations the board said the states were reluctant to accept were the one-state-one-vote policy, the age cap of 70 for administrators, and the limit of three, three-year terms with cooling-off periods in between for office bearers. The court order put the states under pressure to comply by cutting off their funding. “The BCCI shall forthwith cease and desist from making any disbursement of funds for any purpose whatsoever to any state association until and unless the state association concerned adopts a resolution undertaking to implement the recommendations of the Committee as accepted by this Court in its judgment dated 18 July,” the court order said. A state was to receive funds from the BCCI only after the resolution, signed by its president, was submitted to the committee and the court. The court said it had taken cognisance of the argument raised by the board’s legal counsel Kapil Sibal, who had said the BCCI would “demonstrate” to the Lodha Committee how it had already fulfilled some of the recommendations. The court asked the committee to verify whether there had been “full compliance”.
