How they were out
Four dropped catches undid Brad Hodge’s impressive half-century and took Kings XI Punjab back into the top four of the IPL table after they chased down 154 to beat the Kolkata Knight Riders by six wickets. The match went to the final ball but Punjab clearly outperformed Kolkata through the chase. Mahela Jayawardene, who scored an unbeaten 41-ball 52, and Irfan Pathan held their nerve to ensure the match didn’t need the Super Over.Prime Numbers1 The number of last-ball wins by a team batting second this season30.75 Mahela Jayawardene’s average after today’s game – the highest for a Punjab player 43 The total number of ducks in the IPL till this match8 The number of bowlers used by Kolkata in today’s game 2 The number of half-centuries scored by Hodge this season. He is the only Kolkata batsmen to score a half-century in IPL 293.0 Morne van Wyk’s average – the highest by a Kolkata batsman The chase was set up by Simon Katich and Sunny Sohal’s frenetic partnership – 43 balls off 26 balls – after Punjab lost Kumar Sangakkara in the first over. Their stand, and one between Jayawardene and Katich – 33 off 25 balls – put Punjab ahead of the eight-ball even after they lost Katich and Yuvraj Singh before the end of the 15th over. Kolkata’s bowlers, like Punjab’s, conceded full tosses at the death and the final tight over from Ajit Agarkar was too little too late. Kolkata used eight bowlers and may need to review the logic of bringing in left-arm spinner Murali Kartik as the final change.Sohal was dropped twice in two balls after which he and Katich unleashed a shower of fours and sixes – top edges and mistimed shots included – as Kolkata’s bowlers struggled to keep a tight line. Chris Gayle ended his role in the tournament by making a mess of collecting a leading edge off Katich’s bat when he was on 5. Kolkata’s most productive over had been their final one where Brad Hodge and Morne van Wyk took Irfan Pathan for 21 runs; Punjab managed that in their fourth over, with Katich and Sohal hitting 22 off Ashok Dinda,.Punjab’s bowling had been equally ordinary but Kolkata’s batsmen, barring Hodge, could not hit over the top. Brendon McCullum struggled to pick the gaps and Gayle failed to build on his steady start. The run-rate did not improve significantly even after Hodge joined McCullum at the crease after Gayle’s fall.McCullum ground out his 19 runs off 31 balls before pulling a short and wide delivery off Chawla straight to Vikramjeet Malik at deep backward square-leg. His dismissal brought a spurt of energy to the innings, due mainly to Hodge. At first he rotated the strike with Sourav Ganguly and converted the loose deliveries into boundaries. He pulled Yuvraj for two consecutive fours to midwicket and then hit Abdulla over his head for a six; Ganguly opened the face of his bat to guide a four to third man and then slogged a huge six off Chawla to square leg. That seemed to energise Ganguly and he tried to attack every subsequent delivery. It didn’t work and three balls later Ganguly top-edged a sweep to Kumar Sangakkara for a 23-ball 22.After Ganguly’s dismissal, Hodge threw his bat at everything and the 21 runs off the final over would have given Kolkata the game if it hadn’t been for those dropped catches.

Celtic dealt Karamoko Dembele injury blow

Celtic have been dealt a huge injury blow regarding Karamoko Dembele ahead of their upcoming Premiership fixture.

What’s the latest?

In a recent post on his Instagram account (via Daily Record), the 18-year-old winger – who has been sidelined since Celtic’s pre-season tour of Wales – revealed that he has suffered a setback in his recovery from injury, having to undergo surgery on an ankle fracture, which will keep him out of action until at least the turn of the year.

Regarding his injury, the England under-18 international said: “Unfortunately I’ve had some problems with the healing process of my ankle fracture, so I’ve had to get surgery done. Back on the field soon!”

Fans will be gutted

Considering the sheer amount of potential Dembele seems to possess, the news that he looks set to remain sidelined until at least 2022 is sure to have left the Parkhead faithful gutted.

Indeed, the £225k-rated teenager had started to feature more regularly for the Bhoys towards the back end of last season, playing in three of the club’s last four fixtures of the 2020/21 Premiership season, in which the winger scored his first senior goal for the club in a 4-0 drubbing of St Johnstone.

Prior to his injury, Dembele was also heavily involved in Celtic’s pre-season fixtures, featuring in both the 2-1 win over Charlton Athletic – a game in which the 18-year-old opened the scoring for the Hoops – and the 0-0 draw with Bristol City.

However, following his recent update, it now looks as if the teenage forward will not only miss Saturday’s visit of St Johnstone but also many more fixtures before he makes his return to first team action. That will undoubtedly come as a huge blow to Ange Postecoglou, who had admitted that he was looking forward to working with the youngster upon his arrival at Celtic this summer.

A gente conversou seriamente assim.

Estou tentando voltar – publicou o defensor do Cruzeiro.

Gayle laments batting disasters

West Indies’ captain, Chris Gayle, was left lamenting a “disaster” for his team, as England rolled them over inside three days in the first Test at Lord’s

West Indies’ captain, Chris Gayle, was left lamenting a “disaster” for his team, as England rolled them over inside three days in the first Test at Lord’s, to secure a ten-wicket victory that leaves them favourites to reclaim the Wisden Trophy just two months after it was lost in an attritional series in the Caribbean.Aside from a 143-run stand on the final afternoon between Brendan Nash and Denesh Ramdin, West Indies showed barely any of the fight and character that that secured their 1-0 victory in the previous series. They dropped six catches in a crucial final session of the first day, then succumbed to some dramatic batting collapses in both innings as the unfamiliar May conditions wrecked their resolve.”Obviously, we are very disappointed in the manner we lost the game in three days,” said Gayle. “We have to give credit to England because I thought they played some good cricket, and held on to their chances. But that last session on the first day put us on the back foot, and then we couldn’t actually get out of the slump. We have ourselves to blame for that.”Aside from a battling 81 for Nash, the only positive for West Indies was the form of Fidel Edwards, who claimed 6 for 92 in a hostile first-innings onslaught. He was, however, the victim of three clear-cut dropped catches, and Gayle admitted that the fielders had let him down. “”Fidel bowled brilliantly and could easily have set the game up for us,” he said. “But the chances were put down.”Gayle attracted controversy in the build-up to the match by arriving in the country only 48 hours before the start. It meant he did not have time to acclimatise himself properly ahead of the earliest start in English Test history, and he admitted that the conditions had not been easy for his team to negotiate.”We’ve never been in England so early before, so we’re up against it,” he said. “It would be nice to tour later in the year, with a lot more sunshine because it does make a difference. A lot of the time when I was batting out there with the wind hitting the eyes, there was a lot of water in the eyes as well.”It does make a difference in alien conditions. The ball doing a bit more, and it’s a disadvantage we have to cope with. We just have to tough it out, bear with it and get the job done as much as possible.”The final scoreline was identical to the ten-wicket defeat that England Lions inflicted on the West Indians at Derby last week, and Gayle admitted that the same old mistakes had been repeated. “The last couple of weeks we have had some hiccups with the batting, and in this Test match it kind of crumbled again,” he said.”We lost the plot. We didn’t get off to the start we wanted and after that it was a disaster for us, although Ramdin and Nash and Devon Smith chipped in to take out the disgrace by showing some fight.”

Journalist hints at Traore leaving Wolves

Adama Traore could leave Wolves and still isn’t the finished article as a footballer, according to Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield.

The Lowdown: Traore still hit-and-miss

The 25-year-old is arguably one of the Premier League’s most entertaining players, given his remarkable pace and ability to dribble past players.

A lack of end product has always been Traore’s downfall, however, and despite some good performances this season, he is still yet to register a single goal or assist.

The Latest: Hatfield makes key claim

The Spaniard’s future at Wolves is up in the air, with a new contract not yet signed, and speaking to Give Me Sport, Hatfield suggested that he wouldn’t be a great loss now:

“It’s a lot of money to get for a player whose future isn’t guaranteed at the club.

“He is not the youngest player in the world anymore – it’s not like he’s 22 years of age.

“He’s pushed on from there now in terms of years on the pitch and we’re yet to see that end product really reveal itself on a consistent basis.”

The Verdict: Time to earn big money for him?

There is always hope that Traore will suddenly go up a gear and find consistency in the final third – Tim Sherwood has described him as ‘fantastic’ – but as each year passes, the more unlikely it feels.

As Hatfield alludes to, the wide man is 25 now and should be in and around his peak years, but he arguably remains as raw as he has ever been.

For this reason, if a huge bid comes in for Traore, Wolves should accept it, using the money elsewhere and moving on without him.

Vale mudar?

NOVA OPORTUNIDADE NO DOMINGO

Titans win third SuperSport title

A summary of the latest round of SuperSport Series matches

Cricinfo staff05-Apr-2009

Jacques Rudolph: A brave century in the Lions’ attempt at an unlikely win•Getty Images

The Titans were officially crowned SuperSport Series Champions for the 2008-09 season during the tea break on day three, and their match against the Lions ended in a draw a day later in Johannesburg. Their nearest challengers, the Eagles, didn’t manage to pick up the necessary points needed to usurp the Titans, even though they beat the Dolphins by eight wickets with more than two days to spare.By stumps on day three the Lions led by 251 with eight wickets in hand, and on the fourth morning Alviro Petersen smacked his second century of the game before the Lions declared on 167 for 2 in 38 overs. With the title already settled, the Titans went about their stiff target of 333 in 76 at a brisk clip, led by Jacques Rudolph. Despite the loss of the openers Heino Kuhn (27) and Blake Snijman (15) to Freidel de Wet and later Gulam Bodi for 5, Rudolph ticked away undaunted. He found good support from Francois du Plessis but the target was always out of reach. Rudolph finished on 124 from 146 balls and du Plessis 65 from 77.Winning the toss, the Lions racked up a formidable 526 for 9 with Petersen hitting 129 and Dane Vilas 203 off 295 balls. They then reduced the Titans to 126 for 4 on by stumps on day two but Farhaan Behardien’s 114 off 172 balls enabled the Titans avoid the follow-on. Berhardien brought up his 11th first-class half-century off 114 balls before he tore into the Lions’ bowling attack; he needed just 35 balls for his second 50. He and his captain, Pierre Joubert, added 160 for the sixth wicket. Joubert hit 71 from 145 balls, his 15th first-class fifty, before he was bowled by de Wet.This is the third time the Titans have lifted the trophy and it caps off another successful season for them. “It has been awesome, last year when we won two trophies it was a bit of a dream, but to repeat that feat this season has been fabulous,” said Joubert. “It has been a team effort, everyone contributed. When the chips were down there was always someone who came in and played well.”Going back to the Eagles’ crushing win over the Dolphins by eight wickets inside two days in Kimberley. Set a target of 93 in the final session, the Eagles needed just 22 overs to seal victory, with the opener Reeza Hendricks hitting 42 off 49 balls and Boeta Dippenaar 37 off 57 deliveries. The Dolphins trailed by 73 when the day began and folded for 175 in 50 overs. The main contributor to that poor effort was Jon Kent, with a battling 64 off 95 balls. The promising 19-year-old left-arm fast bowler Obus Pienaar, who took 4 for 46 in the Dolphin’s poor first-innings 132, picked up 4 for 40 in the second. From a dismal match, the one positive the Dolphins could take was the efforts of of Kyle Abbott, the 21-year-old allrounder. His 50 was the highest score in the first innings and he followed it with for 4 for 40 in the Eagles’ innings of 215. He added two quick wickets in the second innings too.The Warriors beat the Cobras with more than a day to spare in East London, there by tightening their hold on the No. 3 spot. Darryl Brown and Zander de Bruyn shared eight wickets to dismiss the Cobras for a paltry 74 in their second innings – far worse than the 124 put up in the first dig – and seal a whopping 236-run win. The Warriors were bowled out for 197 in their second innings with Davy Jacobs scoring 101 off 153 balls. That left the Cobras an unlikely 311 to win, and Brown and de Bruyn took four wickets each. Earlier, having been put into bat, the Cobras had done well to keep the Warriors to 237 thanks to seven wickets from Claude Henderson. But five from Andrew Birch then gave the Warriors a 113-run lead. It proved a handy lead.

Sonny Perkins: West Ham’s next Declan Rice?

He may be a striker but there’s a belief among those close to West Ham that young academy gem Sonny Perkins could well become the club’s next Declan Rice.

That’s certainly one claim from Irons insider ExWHUemployee, who made the exciting declaration on a recent episode of his ‘The West Ham Way’ podcast.

He said: “One thing to also pay attention to is a West Ham youngster called Sonny Perkins. He was on target for the England U18s on Monday as they beat Russia.

“This is someone I’ve spoken about on the podcast before as a talent, and he’s really beginning to stand out now at academy level, really getting rave reviews.

“Obviously performing on the international stage as well for his age, and he is one to keep an eye on.

“From what I’ve heard in the academy circles, he could be the next Declan Rice. So just keep your eye out for his progression within the next few years.”

Aged just 17, the Hammers prospect recently broke into the club’s under-23 squad, despite only being a second year scholar, whilst he made he debut for the England under-18s just last month.

That speaks volumes on not just his potential but his current ability. Clearly he’s performing way above his current age, so that’s exactly why he’s being touted as another Rice, who broke into the first team as a teenager himself.

Perkins has been in fine form for West Ham’s youth teams this season, scoring five times in nine appearances across the Under-18 Premier League, the Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy, and that includes an impressive hat-trick against Reading at the start of the new campaign.

Meanwhile, according to The Athletic, there is plenty of optimism over West Ham’s current academy set-up, and it is something in which first-team manager David Moyes has taken a keen interest.

He and his backroom staff regularly attend games, so it’s surely a matter of time before Perkins catches his eye, if he hasn’t already.

Given the Hammers’ need for striking reinforcements, a player of the teenager’s calibre could well help save the club millions in future transfer windows.

If you’ve got the ability, then it doesn’t matter what age you are, and the likes of Rice and Ben Johnson have been testament to that.

AND in other news, Newman can seal West Ham bargain in 6 ft 4 “diamond” who was once “very keen” to join…
