Andrew gives hope to threadbare Worcestershire

ScorecardPerhaps there was something fitting about the presence of a scaffold at the Diglis End of Worcestershire’s New Road ground. Although it was only assembled to accommodate Sky’s television cameras, its resemblance to a gallows seemed more in keeping with the mood at the club. As Mark Newton, Worcestershire’s chief executive, put it, some of the members “are calling for heads” after a truly grim season. It’s not just the impending relegation. After two previous experiences of life in the first division – both of which lasted just the season – supporters always knew that relegation was a possibility. The fight is not so much to avoid the drop, but to surpass the record lowest points tally for a division one side, of 88.5, set by Glamorgan in 2005.The angst that was so apparent at members’ forum following play is caused more by the exodus of leading players. Steve Davies and Gareth Batty have already announced their decisions to depart and it is almost certain that others will follow.Stephen Moore has a clause in his contract allowing him to leave if the club are relegated, while the vultures circling over Worcestershire’s new pavilion are also aiming to pick up the likes of Kabir Ali and Chris Whelan. With Simon Jones already released, and the club having admitted they may not be able to afford an overseas player next year, one wonders what sort of squad they will field next season.Certainly the side they have assembled in this match is remarkably lacking in experience. In the absence of Kabir, Mason, Jones, Whelan, Batty and an overseas player, the four seamers selected here have played only 49 first-class games between them and include a 21-year-old debutant, Jack Shantry, the brother of Glamorgan’s Adam. The reasons given for the departures – poor pitches, poor training facilities and uncompetitive salaries – are only part of the answer. There is also an issue with the relationship between some of the players and the director of cricket, Steve Rhodes. It looks, at present, as if the club’s management will stick with Rhodes, trusting him to rebuild over the next few years.”The crucial thing is that we have players here who want to play for Worcestershire,” Rhodes said. “I don’t want anyone here who isn’t completely committed. I want people who are prepared to die for the club. In a way, this is a very exciting time for the club. We’ve a couple of tough years ahead of us, yes, but I’m looking forward to it.”A few things have happened that have been difficult to come to terms with. Things like losing £300,000 off my cricket budget. There have been times when I’ve felt quite depressed; and I know that’s a big word to use.”But I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I’m feeling refreshed. I’ve decided to roll my sleeves up and get on with it.”On the evidence of the first day of this game, he has a little with which to work. Richard Jones and Gareth Andrew both recorded career-best scores, while Daryl Mitchell and Ben Smith recovered some form after trying seasons. It is with players such as Mitchell, Andrew and Jones that Rhodes must try to rebuild at New Road. None would claim to be the most talented players, but all three showed admirable spirit and character in helping their team pick up a third batting bonus point for just the fourth time this season.Indeed, on the evidence of this performance, it was hard to pick between the sides. Nottinghamshire may be second in the championship table, but they have not won in seven championship games and are 37 points adrift of Durham. They have to win here to have any hope of winning the title.Missing Ryan Sidebottom and Stuart Broad, on England duty, and Luke Fletcher and Darren Pattinson who are struggling for form and fitness, they failed to capitalise on winning the toss and bowling in conditions about which seam and swing bowlers should dream.Charlie Shreck took particular punishment. Struggling with his pace and rhythm, he looked almost unrecognisable from the man who claimed more than 60 first-class wickets last year. He was pulled for sixes by Jones and Andrew and currently has only a dozen wickets this season at a cost of over 70 apiece.Andy Carter, a 20-year-old seamer on championship debut, also struggled. He generated some pace and bounce from a low, slingy action, but failed to maintain the consistency required. Andre Adams was easily the pick of the attack. Swinging the ball prodigiously, he only leaked runs late in the day and was unfortunate to see Solanki (on 18) and Mitchell (on 36) put down off his bowling. But it is Mitchell who deserves the credit for Worcestershire improved performance. He made only 25 in the morning session but, in drawing the sting from the bowling when the conditions were at their most difficult, laid the platform for much of what was to come later. Most of his top-order colleagues struggled. Moore was beaten by a beauty that bounced and left him, before Solanki was punished for trying to clip an outswing through mid-wicket by edging to slip. Moeen Ali left a straight one, while Steve Davies slashed to point. With Smith, however, Mitchell at last found a partner to stay with him. The pair added 89, with Smith cutting particularly well in compiling just his third half-century of the championship season. He remains without a century for 38 months, however, and when he fell to an edged cut and Mitchell’s 62-over vigil was ended when he was drawn into prodding at one outside off-stump, it left Worcestershire’s innings in the balance at 181 for 6. But Andrew, hitting hard but straight, marshalled the lower-order so effectively that he added 59 for the seventh-wicket with Kervezee and an unbroken 74 for the eight with Jones. With the pitch easing and Nottinghamshire’s attack beginning to labour, Andrew swung his bat at anything short, but also drove pleasingly and blocked sensibly. He may not be able to prevent seemingly inevitable relegation, but he has at least provided a glimmer of hope for Worcestershire’s future.

Ismael must axe Zohore in January

In recent comments cited by Birmingham Live, West Bromwich Albion manager Valerien Ismael suggested that, despite having played a bit-part role at The Hawthorns so far this season, Kenneth Zohore could well still have a role to play for the Baggies.

Speaking about the centre-forward’s standing in his squad ahead of the January transfer window, Ismael said: “At the minute it’s early – you never know what can happen. You see with Kean [Bryan], that situation. In the next game, there could be another situation and the player is involved in the game.

“Just patience, work, he wants to play every time with the U23s which is a good sign. He wants to stay in the rhythm. He trains well. He is our player so everyone needs to be involved, stay focused and involved and you never know.”

Zohore must go

While Ismael’s suggestion that Zohore could still prove to be a useful part of his Albion squad if one of his favoured forwards becomes unavailable due to injury or suspension is perhaps sensible, it is nevertheless an unavoidable fact that, so far in his West Brom career, the 27-year-old has simply not been good enough.

Indeed, after making an £8.01m move to the Baggies back in 2019, the £1.8m-rated man failed to impress over his 17 Championship appearances in his debut campaign, scoring three goals, providing no assists and missing four big chances, as well as hitting the target with an average of just 0.6 shots per game.

These returns saw the player who Neil Warnock once dubbed an “outstanding” talent average a SofaScore match rating of just 6.67, ranking him as Albion’s fourth-worst performer in the league that season.

The £16.5k-per-week striker then endured an equally disappointing loan spell at Millwall last year, scoring two goals over 17 Championship appearances for the Lions, before returning to The Hawthorns this summer.

Furthermore, so far this season, Zohore has found himself left out of each of Ismael’s matchday squads since the second fixture of the campaign against Luton Town, a fixture in which the 46-year-old Albion boss was furious with the 27-year-old’s efforts upon his introduction to the game.

As such, considering the 6 foot 3 striker’s below-par performances and rather hefty weekly wage, Ismael simply must axe the centre-forward this winter, as he is undoubtedly becoming something of a burden for the club.

Saints slam Elyounoussi

Taking to Twitter, many Southampton fans criticised the performance of winger Mohamed Elyounoussi against Norwich City at Carrow Road today.

Looking to climb from the mid-table places after a solid run of form, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men took on the Canaries for Dean Smith’s first game in charge. Indeed, all eyes were on the 50-year-old, who arrived at Norwich after being sacked from Villa, with the Saints hoping to make his first game at the helm a losing one.

Che Adams couldn’t have got the Saints off to a better start, opening the scoring with a neat bottom-corner finish after wriggling his way through Norwich’s backline. However, some poor goalkeeping from Alex McCarthy granted the home side a leveller just three minutes later as Teemu Pukki scored at the back post.

Then, with 10 minutes remaining, Norwich came back to take the lead courtesy of defender Grant Hanley – who rose highest at the back post to nod in the winner from a corner. It turned out to be the winning goal at Carrow Road as the Canaries made it two wins in a row.

Saints slam Elyounoussi…

As the Saints come away from the east coast with nothing, one man who was slated by some of their fans was Elyounoussi, due to his lack of impact going forward.

The 27-year-old, taking among the fewest touches out of any Southampton player according to SofaScore, also didn’t register one cross into the box or shot on target, prompting Hasenhuttl to replace him with Armando Broja midway through the second period.

Here’s what these Saints supporters made of his performance as they took to social media, with one fan calling him the team’s ‘weak link’:

“#SaintsFC need Ted Lasso to teach these boys to make the extra pass. If he can teach Jamie Tartt, he can teach Mo Elyounoussi.”

“Imo, Diallo shouldn’t be playing where he is. He’s a good player but he’s not got that attacking intelligence that you need to play further forward. Elyonoussi has been poor and wasteful as well. If I’m Tella watching this, I’m not sure what I need to, to get into the squad.”

“Spot on. Elyounuossi is the weak link so far, he needs to step up and start taking his chances or assisting some goals.”

“Elyounoussi the weak link in this side today !”

“Elyounoussi is a talented player, but my God his decision making is so bad. In fact the decision making of all 3 of our attackers today is horrible.”

Andrew Symonds has decided to return to competitive cricket by turning out for Queensland in Twenty20s, three months after his Cricket Australia contract was canceled for an off-field misdemeanour .Symonds, 34, held talks with Queensland Cricket CEO Graham Dixon and expressed his desire to play for the team in the summer.”I’m going to play again,” he said. “I’ve decided I’m going to play Twenty20 cricket for Queensland and I’m available if they want me for the other forms of the game. I came to the decision about two weeks ago. I went in and saw Graham Dixon and told him I was keen to come back. They [Queensland Cricket] were pleased with that decision.”In early June, Symonds was sent home from England during the World Twenty20 for breaking a ban on alcohol consumption imposed by Cricket Australia. But Queensland Cricket stood by him and Dixon had said Symonds would be picked in the squad if he wanted to play.Symonds did not believe he would making an international return any time soon.”If you can’t sit in the pub and watch a football game over a beer and if that is upsetting team rules and harmony, there’s no place for me anymore,” he said.Symonds was not handed a central contact with Queensland for the 2009-10 season, and will therefore be paid on a per match basis. He will secure a lower tier contract deal if he plays a specific number of matches for Queensland.

Vivemos jogo a jogo.

No waivers for India, says FICA

The FICA has warned that if the ICC did not penalise India’s players for failing to submit to new anti-doping norms in time, it would ensure that players from all other countries would be relieved from similar obligations

Ajay S Shankar31-Jul-2009The WADA penaltyThe ICC’s new WADA code requires players to inform ICC 90 days in advance (each quarter) a location and time that they will be available each day in that quarter for testing. If the player is not in the location at the time specified, he/she will have a strike recorded against his name. Three such strikes and the player will have breached the code and can face penalties up to a two-year ban.The Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations (FICA) has warned that if the ICC does not penalise India’s players for failing to submit to the new anti-doping norms in time, it would ensure that players from all other countries would be relieved from similar obligations.Tim May, the FICA chief executive, admitted that concerns expressed by India’s players on the code’s requirements were genuine and similar to those already voiced by FICA. However, he suggested that Indian players should not be given a waiver of any sort on the issue because players from all other countries have agreed to abide by the ICC code.India’s players, who are not members of FICA, have voiced concerns about the security and practicality aspects associated with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) compliant code. The code requires players in the testing pool, including 11 Indian players, to submit details in advance of their whereabouts for the next three months to facilitate effective out-of-competition testing. The Indian players have missed the July 31 deadline for submitting the information and are awaiting a meeting between the ICC and BCCI on Sunday to get their concerns addressed on the norms, which prescribe severe penalties in case of default. Three Indian players in the testing pool, Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Virender Sehwag, are expected to attend the meeting.”If the ICC is unable to convince Indian players to provide this information, ICC will find itself in a difficult situation because their universal policy will not be adhered to by all countries,” May told Cricinfo. “From a player association perspective, if the Indian players do not have to comply with the whereabouts provision or don’t suffer penalties for not filing such information, then we will certainly be ensuring that ICC lift this obligation from the rest of the teams. ICC will either have to cite the Indian players for filing failures or relieve all other players from all other countries from the need to comply with this regulation. For the regulation to be operative, it must apply equally to all teams or not at all.”The ICC put in place the WADA code from January 1 and has since conducted familiarisation sessions for all international players who were selected to the testing pool based on their ICC ranking that month. The Indian players were briefed on the norms by ICC officials during their New Zealand tour in March.”My understanding is that Indian players have expressed significant concerns as to the confidentiality of the information that they provide – on a privacy and security standpoint,” May said. “These are legitimate concerns which ICC will need to deal with in providing comfort to the players that their information is at all times secure.”May said that the FICA would continue to raise its concerns on the code with the ICC and also attend a meeting in September between WADA and representatives from other world players’ associations in September. “We, along with a number of other sporting organisations and player associations from other sports, have significant concerns with the administrational and privacy aspects,” he said. “There is a meeting of a number of world player associations in London with WADA to discuss, among other things, concerns with the whereabouts requirements for those who participate in team sports.”
