Howard’s comments came a day after Muttiah Muralitharan, the word’s leading Test wicket-taker, said he would have a difficult time convincing the Asian bloc of his capabilities.However, Nishantha Ranatunga, the SLC secretary, told Cricinfo that any country had the right to nominate their choice for the post and it was not ethical for Sri Lanka to harp on incidents that had happened in the past. “We know that Howard as prime minister unruffled a few feathers calling Muttiah Muralitharan a chucker, but that is now a thing of the past,” he said. “We don’t want to harp on it any more. We have to look to the future and try to work cordially with whoever is elected to the ICC post. We have no control over people elected to that position.”Howard, who led Australia from 1996 to 2007, will have the position rubber stamped in June and will succeed India’s Sharad Pawar in two years. Responding to criticism that he lacked the required skills to hold the post of ICC president, Howard pointed to a 30-year political career. ”I think the fact I haven’t been involved in cricket administration is explained by the fact I had a day job which made that rather difficult,” he said.Howard’s nomination will be approved at the ICC’s executive board meeting in April and the position will be finalised at the annual conference in the middle of the year.

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Newcastle United are “still pushing” to sign Sevilla defender Diego Carlos in this January transfer window.

The Magpies have been linked with a number of defenders in recent weeks, including Lille’s Sven Botman, but it appears Eddie Howe’s side have got their sights set on Carlos.

After initial reports from The Telegraph’s Jason Burt that the club had indeed submitted a bid for the Brazilian, Romano has now delivered an update where things currently stand.

He said: “Newcastle are still pushing with Sevilla for Diego Carlos but fee not agreed as things stand.”

Fans will be buzzing

With the second-worst defensive record in the entire division this season, it’s no surprise that Eddie Howe has quickly turned his attentions towards pushing for a new central defender following the signing of Chris Wood earlier this week.

The 28-year-old Carlos would give the Magpies a monstrous defensive presence were he to join, boasting an impressive 4.2 duels won per game at a success rate of 64% – to put that into context, Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk has won 4.6 duels per match at a success rate of 71% in the Premier League.

And, in a player profile done by La Liga Analysis, they said: “He’s very strong in duels and knows how to use his body to destabilise his opponents. But even if he’s big and heavy, Diego Carlos is still a great athlete. He’s very powerful, his pace in long distances is great, and he’s surprisingly agile and flexible. These characteristics are the base of his game as he knows how to take advantage of his physical superiority.”

Carlos has played all but one of his side’s La Liga games this season, helping the Spanish outfit to the best defensive record in the league – a far cry from what Newcastle have got.

The Lowdown: Souttar in

It has now been confirmed that John Souttar has signed a pre-contract agreement with the Ibrox faithful from Hearts, and he may even be able to play from this month if a further agreement can be made.

A few central defenders for the Teddy Bears are facing uncertain futures, and so bringing in a new centre-back was vital.

In truth, they could do with another one as well, given that both Connor Goldson and Leon Balogun’s contracts are up in the summer, with no sign of them renewing as of yet.

The Latest: Doekhi next?

As per The Athletic journalist Jordan Campbell, the Light Blues are now in a ‘strong position’ to sign Doekhi, after confirming Souttar’s signing.

The Dutchman is also a player whose contract is up in the summer, and so he could also be very attainable this month.

The Verdict: No-brainer

Assuming both Goldson and Balogun leave, it would be a no-brainer to sign Doekhi up alongside Souttar.

He has been described as having ‘all the ingredients’ for a good centre-half by Dutch football agent Freddy van der Hoorn, as he is ‘aggressive’ being six-foot-three, but also ‘very comfortable’ on the ball as well (Rangers Review).

Doekhi has also hinted himself that he would like the move, claiming that he is ‘flattered’ by the Gers’ interest, and that they are a ‘very beautiful’ club (de Gelderlander).

Nonetheless, to play under Dutch legend Giovanni van Bronckhorst could well be a match made in heaven.

Three run-outs hurt Australiabadly, including two that resulted in flat, accurate throws from the outfieldfrom Umar Akmal.But the most impressive was Fawad’s effort to get rid of Cameron Whitefor 4. A Gul short ball lobbed off White’s body to point where Fawad tookthe catch, but while the umpire was turning down the appeal, White wanderedout of his crease and was brilliantly snared by a smart throw.It was the second good thing that Fawad did in the field after he held asharp chance at point to send Michael Clarke on his way for 32 from 26 balls.Clarke’s innings was useful but didn’t exactly disprove the doubters whobelieve he is unsuited to Twenty20 cricket.He began in promising enough fashion with a cracking cut for four from hisfirst delivery but there was only one more boundary and most of his runscame from scrambled ones and twos. Neither of Australia’s debutants had inningsto remember – Travis Birt was out second ball when he missed a paddle sweepand was bowled, and Smith was bowled by Rana’s slower delivery for8.The Twenty20 specialist David Warner made a handy 24 but his dismissal sparkeda mini-collapse of 5 for 27. The last of those wickets was Brad Haddin, stumpeddown the leg side. It was one of several good things Kamran did for the match.He simply didn’t have enough support with the bat.
