Alan Nixon drops January transfer claim

Alan Nixon has dropped a teasing West Bromwich Albion transfer claim ahead of the January window.

What’s the talk?

In a recent post on Twitter, The Sun journalist claimed that Valerien Ismael and his West Brom transfer team are targeting a number of centre-forwards ahead of the opening of the winter market, although went on to suggest that bringing one of said targets into the club will not be easy.

In response to a fan asking for an update on what business the Baggies are hoping to do in January, Nixon said: “Been looking into strikers for weeks… not easy.”

Fans will be buzzing

Considering Ismael’s distinct lack of a goalscoring number nine at The Hawthorns, the news that Albion are indeed targeting a centre-forward in the January transfer window – and appear to have already penned a list of potential candidates – is sure to have left fans of the club buzzing.

Indeed, it is clear for all to see that summer signing Jordan Hugill, who joined the club on a season-long loan from Norwich City, is simply not of the standard required for West Brom’s promotion push.

So far this term, the 29-year-old has scored just one goal over his 18 Championship appearances, as well as averaging an extremely disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.53 – ranking him as the Baggies’ fourth-worst performer in the division.

And, while Karlan Grant and Callum Robinson have chipped in with nine and four league goals respectively, Ismael’s lack of an out and out goalscorer at the tip of his three-man attack is undoubtedly the biggest factor as to why the Frenchman’s team have scored fewer goals than each of the other sides currently in the top six – Stoke City aside.

As such, the news that the club are looking to address this issue in January is undoubtedly positive for everyone involved with West Brom – as, if Albion are to have any chance of catching AFC Bournemouth and Fulham in the automatic promotion spots, a 20-goal-a-season striker would appear to be very much required.

Don't sell-out Windies – Garner

Joel Garner believes cricket’s stronger nations would be flouting history and acting out of self-interest if they voted to relegate the West Indians

Alex Brown02-Dec-2009

Joel Garner: “If a player really wants to better himself, it is difficult when there are only six or eight first-class games a year.”•AFP

The cricketing world has a short memory. As Joel Garner recalls, it wasn’t that long ago the likes of Australia and England relied upon West Indian tours to drag otherwise underwhelmed spectators through the turnstiles.”When other teams weren’t doing so well, and we were playing exciting cricket, we were relied upon so they could boost revenues,” Garner said. “People forget how much money West Indies cricket has generated for the world when we were the team of choice for host countries.”Not surprisingly, Garner is unimpressed by calls for a two-tier Test system; calls that increased in volume and frequency after West Indies’ dispiriting performance in the Brisbane Test. He believes cricket’s stronger nations would be flouting history and acting out of self-interest if they voted to relegate the West Indians who, he insists, could rise again as a competitive force with appropriate funding.”It’s a selfish way to live your life,” said Garner, who is currently serving as West Indies team manager on the tour of Australia. “You’re basically saying, ‘We’re OK so to hell with you.’ A four-team competition makes no sense. If we want eight competitive teams rather than just four, administrators need to look at new ways of sharing their revenue. West Indies needs rebranding, and it would be to the benefit of everybody if that happened.”We are 16 islands that span 1,500 miles from Jamaica to Guyana with six million people where resources are scarce. We can get away with it up through the juniors, but if a player really wants to better himself, it is difficult when there are only six or eight first-class games a year. What we need is a professional league. We are not looking for handouts, just ways of looking at the way cricket’s revenue is shared to improve the game in the Caribbean.”Sections of the Australian media have been vociferous in their condemnation of the West Indians since their arrival in Brisbane, supporting the case for their relegation from a proposed top tier of Test nations. Travis Dowlin, a Guyanese batsman with a cricketing resume spanning three Tests, was the latest to experience the blowtorch when an Adelaide television reporter asked whether the ICC should take action against West Indies for their poor form.Tony Cozier, the veteran Bajan commentator and columnist, expressed his disappointment at the reaction of sections of the Australian media to West Indies’ plight. “The abuse and scorn heaped on the team … was undeserving,” Cozier wrote. “Much of it was simply beyond the pale.” Cozier went on to point out that, despite a difficult decade, West Indies had defeated England in a Test series this year and experienced a disjointed build up to the Brisbane Test, which they lost inside three days.Garner concurs. “The West Indies team was invited to Australia in 1984 to bring people through the gates and there was no suggestion from our end that we wouldn’t come,” he said. “I think some people need to look at the bigger picture.”

Newcastle must sign Anthony Martial

Ever since Newcastle United’s takeover by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund was completed, the Magpies have been linked with audacious swoops for numerous players across Europe.

The upcoming January window could see some big signings come through the door at St James’ Park, but there is one man in particular who could make a vital difference – Anthony Martial.

What’s the latest?

Earlier this week, it was reported that the Manchester United forward wants to leave Old Trafford in January after six-and-a-half years with the Red Devils, according to his agent. The Frenchman has scored just once this season in 10 appearances across all competitions, which begs the question – is he now surplus to requirements?

Of course, there is a new man at the helm in Ralf Rangnick who could reignite his career in Manchester, but Martial could also be seen as the ideal player to offload in order to generate funds, with Transfermarkt valuing the 26-year-old at £31.5m.

With hefty funds certainly expected to be available for Eddie Howe, Martial could be the ideal candidate to fix Newcastle’s goalscoring woes and boost their Premier League survival bid.

Newcastle fans will be buzzing

A lack of goals has certainly contributed to United’s poor start to the campaign, scoring just 17 in 15 league matches. Callum Wilson has scored six of those goals and could certainly do with some extra help up front, with fellow striker Joelinton netting just once.

Newcastle fans must be delighted to hear that they are among the favourites to sign Martial, who has been subject to praise throughout his tenure at Old Trafford. That’s been the case ever since joining as a 19-year-old back in 2015, having been labelled a “Ferrari” and a “world-class” player after impressing in Manchester United’s Europa League quarter-final win against Copenhagen back in 2020.

Moreover, the Frenchman had also been likened to his fellow countryman Thierry Henry when he first arrived in England from Monaco, and his 268 appearances for the Red Devils have seen him net 79 goals, a clear illustration that he is a reliable scorer.

Martial could well be departing Manchester United next month and, should Howe be backed financially, it seems a no-brainer for Newcastle to make an attempt to bring the 26-year-old forward to Tyneside to seriously improve their chances of staying in the Premier League.

India go top with thumping victory

Sri Lanka may have thwarted India through the fourth day, but Zaheer Khan sliced through the remaining four wickets to take India to a 2-0 series win and the No. 1 spot in the ICC rankings. Zaheer started with a ripper in the first over to get rid of Kumar Sangakkara and finished his best performance of the series with his eighth five-wicket haul. This was the fourth time in the last four years that India had won two matches in a row; two of those braces came against Sri Lanka. In comparison with day four, the end came swift. Sangakkara was yet to get his eye in again when Zaheer bowled the perfect left-armer’s outswinger that took the edge. After that it was all a matter of time: both Rangana Herath and Nuwan Kulasekara succumbed to sharp short deliveries from Zaheer. Muttiah Muralitharan scored a quick 14 but edged Harbhajan Singh to MS Dhoni to kick off India’s celebrations.

Wolves are not interested in Vitinha

Wolverhampton Wanderers are not interested in a deal to bring Vitinha back to Molineux in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Luke Hatfield, with the Express & Star journalist revealing in a recent interview with GIVEMESPORT that, unless Wolves are convinced that the central midfielder has improved significantly since this summer, the club will not be pursuing a deal to bring the 21-year-old back to Molineux in the winter window.

Speaking about the potential of Wolves making a move for the Portugal U21 international, Hatfield said: “I’m not too sure Vitinha is the answer. As I said, they’ve had a good look at him before, and unless he’s shown a marked improvement, I don’t think he’s a player that they’d be ridiculously keen on.”

Fans will be furious

Considering just how impressive Vitinha has been in Portugal so far this season, in addition to Bruno Lage’s side appearing to lack a considerable amount of creativity in the middle of the park in the current campaign, the news that Wolves look unlikely to make a move for Vitinha this January is sure to have left many of the club’s fanbase furious.

Indeed, the £6.3m-rated midfielder has been in exceptional form over his 11 Liga NOS appearances this term, scoring one goal and creating three big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of two shots and making 1.8 key passes per game.

The 21-year-old has also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, making an average of 53.5 passes, one interception, 1.5 tackles and winning 61% of his duels per fixture.

These returns have seen the £4.5k-per-week man average a rather extraordinary SofaScore match rating of 7.72, ranking him as the best player in the entirety of the Portuguese top-flight so far this season.

As such, it would certainly appear as if Vitinha has indeed made a marked improvement since the summer, and, considering the fact that Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho and Leander Dendoncker have scored just one goal and provided two assists between them in the Premier League this term, it would seem as if the Porto starlet is very much a player Lage’s side are in need of at present.

That leads us to believe that Hatfield’s recent claim will not go down well with the Molineux faithful whatsoever.

Gayle sets sights on drawn series

Brydon Coverdale in Perth 15-Dec-2009

Chris Gayle hasn’t seen much success in West Indies cricket in recent years. They have won three of their past 41 Tests; by comparison, Australia have triumphed in 25 of their past 41 matches. The chasm between the two teams in the past few seasons has been enormous. That’s why, with one Test remaining on this tour, West Indies would value a drawn series as a win.To achieve that, they must build on the progress they made in Adelaide, where they had the better of the draw. The outcome meant that as the reigning holders of the Frank Worrell Trophy, Australia retained the prize but on the eve of the third Test in Perth, Gayle jokingly said that a West Indies victory would be so important that his men would deserve the trophy.”Getting a one-all result, that would be great, it would be fantastic,” Gayle said. “Australia will still hold the trophy, but if it do happen, they should give us a trophy. I think we’ll actually deserve it if we win this Test match, we’re looking forward to it and if that do happen they should hand it to us.”Gayle’s wide smile confirmed that he was being tongue-in-cheek but having been involved in so many low points for his team over the past few years, he no doubt felt that such a result would be a cause for major celebration. Adding to his optimism was the fact that Australia will be without Peter Siddle and potentially Nathan Hauritz, and will have one or two debutants in their attack.Although those changes could make Australia more exposed, West Indies are also facing up to the likelihood that Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Adrian Barath won’t play due to injuries. Gayle knows that much will depend on how his own bowlers challenge Australia’s batsmen, who he believes are in form without being invulnerable.”It’s cricket, anything can happen on any given day, it doesn’t matter what sort of team you have out there, they can still crumble,” he said. “Once you get it right definitely we can put a bit of pressure on them, and we’ll see what happens when the pressure is out there. It can be a totally different ball game.”Gayle has spoken to his fastest bowler, Kemar Roach, about the need to convert his good bowling into bigger bags of wickets. The Perth conditions might suit Roach’s speed and Gayle was confident West Indies’ young fast men would not be lured into bowling too short, simply because of the WACA’s reputation for sharp bounce.”You can’t get carried away when you come into these situations,” Gayle said. “They’re keen and they’re getting to know their game a bit more, so I’m sure they will understand to go out there and assess the conditions as quickly as possible, and then work on the team point of view.”It’s still unclear just how much pace and carry the WACA surface will have. The Perth Test pitches over the past couple of years have drawn criticism from Ricky Ponting, who wants to see a return to the trademark fast-bowling paradise of the 1970s and 1980s. The curator Cam Sutherland has prepared a pitch that has barely been used before and on the day before the Test, Ponting was cautiously optimistic.”The weather’s been quite warm here so I’d imagine by tomorrow morning it’ll be quite hard on top with a reasonable cover of grass,” Ponting said. “That normally indicates good pace and bounce in Perth, so we’ll wait and see how the game starts. All reports from the state players are that it’s been quite quick and bouncy.”While West Indies are hoping for a 1-1 result, Australia can answer some of the criticism after the Adelaide draw if they can secure a 2-0 series win. The task has been made harder with the absence of Siddle and the inclusion of the debutant Clint McKay, but Ponting was confident he had the men to deliver Australia’s first Test victory at the WACA in three seasons.”Clint, who’s only been playing first-class cricket for a couple of years, will have played a few games here and know the right way to bowl here,” Ponting said. “Dougie [Bollinger] has had good success here only a couple of weeks ago, taking eight wickets [in a Sheffield Shield game].”Although some of the guys are relatively inexperienced at Test level they’ve all played a fair share of cricket here and should know how to adapt and adjust to these conditions. We know it is a place that fast bowlers can come and get a little bit carried away with things, with the way the ball carries and the bounce in the wicket but our guys should have a better and pretty good understanding of that.”One thing that is certain is that Australia won’t be handing over the Frank Worrell Trophy, regardless of the result. But West Indies have far more to gain than a piece of silverware.
