Edouard could be Southampton’s next Pelle

Southampton have been linked with a move for Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard recently and the Frenchman could be the Saints’ next Graziano Pelle should he complete a move to St Mary’s this summer.

What’s the word?

Following Danny Ings’ surprise move to Aston Villa earlier this month, Southampton have unsurprisingly been linked with a whole host of strikers.

The Athletic have claimed that Alexander Sorloth, Tammy Abraham, Adam Armstrong and Edouard are all names being considered by the Saints, although the fee involved for the Celtic striker could be a sticking point in any potential deal with the Hoops.

Southampton have enjoyed a lot of success in signing players from Celtic in the past, with Virgil van Dijk, Stuart Armstrong and Victor Wanyama notable examples, so perhaps they could turn to the Scottish side once again as they look to replace the talismanic Ings.

Southampton’s next Pelle?

Ralph Hasenhuttl needs someone who is capable of replacing the 35 Premier League goals Ings contributed for Southampton in the last two seasons, and if Edouard could replicate his form from Scotland in England, then he could be the ideal replacement.

The 23-year-old has managed an impressive 84 goals and 38 assists in 174 appearances for Celtic in his career thus far and is widely expected to leave Celtic Park this summer, so could be a stellar addition to Hasenhuttl’s squad.

It was suggested by Ally McCoist last year that Thierry Henry is a big fan of Edouard and feels he has what it takes to reach the top and given his huge success in the Premier League with Arsenal in the past, Southampton should perhaps take his praise seriously and bring the Celtic man to St Mary’s.

If he were to join, Edouard could perform a similar role to Pelle, who contributed 30 goals and 10 assists in 80 appearances for Southampton between 2014 and 2016.

Since his departure, Southampton have lacked a natural target man, with Hasenhuttl seemingly preferring smaller, more agile strikers in his 4-2-2-2 system.

However, now that Ings has left, it gives the Austrian manager the opportunity to re-think his attack ahead of the new season, and Edouard could provide a very different option to the attacking players currently in Hasenhuttl’s squad.

Therefore, Martin Semmens should definitely consider a move for the £15.3m-rated forward this summer.

Fit Watson ready to open again

Shane Watson is preparing to open in an ODI for the first time in 16 months as he looks forward to what he hopes will be the longest injury-free period of his career

Shane Watson is preparing to open in an ODI for the first time in 16 months as he looks forward to what he hopes will be the longest injury-free period of his career. There are two vacant opening positions in the one-day side because of Adam Gilchrist’s retirement and Matthew Hayden’s achilles tendon problem and Watson booked one of those slots after he set up Australia’s innings with 95 in a tour match in Barbados on Saturday. It was on the same island that Watson last played an ODI, the World Cup final, as his muscular yet injury-prone body continued to trouble him through the following Australian summer. His hamstrings have been particularly vulnerable but he is confident that by giving up lifting weights and focusing instead on core strength he can stay out of the physio’s hands.”In the end, I was just doing what people were telling me, what the strength and conditioning guys and the physios I was working with previously were telling me,” Watson told the . “That’s what they thought was best for me.”I’m doing quite a few things differently. For me, the most important thing is being strong in my core, and that’s all I’ve really been doing the last eight months. I feel nicely balanced when I run and when I’m batting and everything.”For me, that has been the really important part, to make sure that every muscle around my core is really strong so it can hold me in positions I want to be in. I haven’t done weights in eight months. That makes a difference.”Watson had a successful run as an ODI opener in late 2006 but he lost his spot in 2006-07 when hamstring injuries kept him out and Hayden triumphantly returned to the one-day unit after a stint as a Test-only player. Tuesday’s first ODI against West Indies gives Australia the chance to trial a new opening combination with Watson likely to partner Shaun Marsh.Watson was not even in Australia’s original squad but after being Player of the Tournament in the Indian Premier League he was named as Hayden’s replacement in the one-day group in the Caribbean. The call-up came after a tough home season for Watson, during which he had a woeful Pura Cup period trying to become a four-day opener and was overlooked for national duties.”I’m actually pinching myself that I’m here again,” he said. “I was sitting in a team meeting before the Twenty20 game and was just blown away I was here.”

Campbell blown away by Spurs transfer claim

Speaking to Football Insider, Sky Sports pundit Kevin Campbell has been blown away by a transfer claim involving Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane and Man City midfielder Bernardo Silva.

The Lowdown: City pull out all the stops?

As August 31 approaches with time running out to land one of their top targets in Kane, reports have recently detailed that City could pull out all the stops to finally sign him.

Reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano claims that the Sky Blues are ‘really pushing’ for him while the Daily Mail highlight just how far they are willing to go.

The Mail claim that City could now offer Spurs the chance to sign Bernardo in a swap deal for Kane and it is believed, in terms of cash, they could also go as high as £130 million.

The Latest: Campbell blown away…

Speaking to FI, reacting to this news from the Mail, Campbell has been blown away by the ‘huge’ update and believes signing Bernardo in exchange plus £130m would be a ‘great deal for Spurs’.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-gossip/” title=”Tottenham latest gossip!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

“Wow, now that would be a great deal for Spurs,” explained the former Premier League striker.

“That is for sure because Bernardo Silva is a fantastic player.

“The question is, will Spurs bite? That is the key. I don’t think Daniel Levy is going to make compromises over this one.

“£130million plus Silva is a lot of money plus a top player. Now if that does not get the juices flowing for Spurs, I really do not know what will. Huge.”

The Verdict: Bang on the money…

Landing a player of Bernardo’s calibre whilst receiving a nine-digit fee would be a major offer and one chairman Daniel Levy would be foolish not to consider.

Kane, at 28-years-old, is slowly but surely approaching the twilight phase of his career – with there being an argument that Spurs should cash-in while they still can.

Given the player’s own desire to leave and Tottenham’s need to adopt a sell-to-buy policy, not entertaining a generous offer of that ilk would be questionable to say the least.

Danish Kaneria has reaffirmed his commitment Pakistan, denying quotes attributed to him that he would consider switching allegiance to England if he wasn’t selected for Pakistan.Kaneria, who is currently playing county cricket for Essex, had been quoted by a local newspaper as saying that he had “plenty of years to go” and will “consider playing for England at one stage if Pakistan” don’t pick him. But despite the fact that his name does not figure among the 30 probables for the Pakistan squad in the Champions Trophy, Kaneria has insisted that he remains committed to Pakistan.”I did not say that I wanted to stay over here (and qualify to play for England),” Kaneria told the Essex website. “I still want to play for Pakistan and my state side there. My priority is with Pakistan for as long as they need me in Test cricket.”In fact I am always there for them in any form of the game – Pakistan has given me the name to be playing cricket in England. If ever Pakistan didn’t select me for three to four years in a row in any form of cricket then, and only then, would I think about coming over here [on a permanent basis].”Kaneria has not represented Pakistan in the current season, and had been reprimanded by the board in April for criticising them after he was demoted to category C among Pakistan’s centrally contracted players. He was in the Pakistan team in their most recent Test, against India in December, and made the last of his 18 ODI appearances in the 2007 World Cup.

BCCI rejects ECB's rival league offer

The BCCI is believed to have rejected an offer from the ECB to join England’s version of the Champions League

The BCCI has rejected an offer from the ECB to join England’s version of the Champions League to be held in Sharjah this October, Cricinfo has learnt. It’s understood that David Collier, the chief executive of the ECB, invited the Indian board to join the ECB’s tournament. However, the BCCI replied on Monday saying that, though it “wished the ECB all the best” with its tournament, “unfortunately, we cannot accept” the invitation. An ECB spokesperson contacted by Cricinfo said he was not aware of the development. The BCCI’s reply, sent on its behalf by Lalit Modi, the IPL commissioner, suggests its position is final. It wants “to avoid playing ping-pong over email” on this issue, reliable sources told Cricinfo. Modi is also understood to have “clearly informed” the eight IPL franchises that they can participate only in tournaments run and approved by the BCCI.It would have been “very unusual” for the BCCI to accept the ECB’s proposal to join another Champions League, the sources said, considering the Indian board had already announced the dates and venues of its own tournament. Significantly, the ECB’s offer says the tournament will be held in Sharjah, which was blacklisted by the Indian government following the allegations of match-fixing. “No Indian team will be going there, at least not with the BCCI’s permission”, the sources said.As far as the BCCI is concerned, it will now focus on its Champions League along with Cricket Australia and Cricket South Africa, who are said to be on board. “Already, more teams are lined up for next year, including West Indies, which has confirmed its participation,” the sources said.On Sunday, Collier was quoted by BBC as saying, “I would be bitterly disappointed if all four nations aren’t represented by their two top teams. We will be discussing with our counterparts in Australia, South Africa and India to try to iron out the last few items within the rules and regulations.”The BCCI-backed Champions League will be played this year in India from September 29 to October 8 at three venues – Jaipur, New Delhi and Mohali. The final details of tournament will be finalised in Mumbai on Wednesday at a meeting to be attended by officials from the BCCI, Cricket South Africa (CSA) and Cricket Australia (CA).Modi had told Cricinfo on Sunday that the ECB would not be represented at the meeting and the tournament was also unlikely to include England, which “has been unreasonable” in continuing to object to various rules and regulations. The BCCI’s Champions League originally planned to include the top two Twenty20 domestic teams from India, Australia, South Africa and England. With the ECB’s participation in doubt, Modi said a team from Pakistan was confirmed while the last slot may be filled by a team from New Zealand or even Sri Lanka.

Guardiola provides De Bruyne injury update

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has provided an update on Kevin De Bruyne’s injury situation as his side prepare for their Premier League opener against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

What’s the word?

The midfielder picked up an ankle injury playing for Belgium during the European Championship this summer and has missed all of City’s pre-season as a result, so he is unlikely to feature in the first few weeks of the season as he continues his recovery.

Guardiola provided an update on De Bruyne’s situation recently, saying: “He’s getting better, every day. We’re still waiting. He cannot do the full training session, some with us and some alone. We’ll see what happens in the next days.”

Whilst it is good news that the 30-year-old has returned to the training pitch, if he cannot complete a full session yet, then it is hard to imagine him being named in the squad to face Spurs this weekend, which is a huge blow to City’s chances of picking up three points against Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.

A huge blow for Guardiola?

Given that De Bruyne was one of the standout performers in the Premier League last season as City won the title, it is far from ideal that he is unavailable as they begin their title defence this weekend, especially at a ground where the Citizens have struggled in recent seasons.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-manchester-city-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Manchester City transfer rumours and news!”]

The former Wolfsburg man made 25 appearances in the top-flight, contributing six goals and 12 assists, averaging a superb 7.65 rating from WhoScored, which ranked him as the top performer in Guardiola’s squad.

Although the manager might well have a ready-made replacement for the Belgian in Jack Grealish, it is difficult to know how the 25-year-old will adapt following his £100m move from Aston Villa, and it would be unfair to expect him to replicate De Bruyne’s goal and assist numbers straight away.

[freshpress-quiz id=“577936”]

Given that De Bruyne’s condition was no doubt worsened by the fact that he played with the injury against Italy in the quarter-finals of Euro 2020, City fans will no doubt be frustrated that he is missing the start of the campaign, especially when you consider the tough start to the season they have been handed.
