23-Apr-2002Secretary-general of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Dr Edwin Carrington has invited the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) to participate in the Civil Society "Forward Together Encounter" to be held in Georgetown, Guyana, on July 2 and 3.The conference, which will see the participation of the Heads of Government of CARICOM, will take place just prior to their annual conference scheduled for Guyana from July 3-5.Carrington extended the invitation to the WICB during an exchange of views between representatives of both parties during the third day of the second 2002 Cable & Wireless Test between West Indies and India at Queen’s Park Oval in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, yesterday.Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Lester Bird, who is also the chairman of the CARICOM Prime Ministerial Sub-Committee on Cricket, proposed the meeting in order to get an overview of the present state of West Indies cricket and to be able to work with the WICB in managing the premier sporting event in the Caribbean.Carrington said the WICB’s participation in the encounter would create an opportunity for every CARICOM head of government to get a comprehensive overview of plans for the World Cup of cricket to be staged in the West Indies in 2007.He added that the WICB’s presentation would also allow participants an insight into the present state of West Indies cricket and the strategic role they will have to play in expanding programmes, including cricket in the curriculum in schools, coaching, fitness and conditioning, and human resource development of West Indies cricketers.During the exchange, the WICB and the CARICOM secretariat agreed to pool resources to promote the future development of all aspects of West Indies cricket, starting with intensive preparations next month for the 2007 World Cup.More than 150 000 visitors are likely to visit the Caribbean during the 2007 World Cup, an event that Chris Dehring, chief executive of Windies World Cup Limited, said would significantly benefit every CARICOM member state.Representatives of both bodies also pledged their commitment to sensitise West Indies cricket fans and the Caribbean public about the scope of the event.Guy Yearwood, Antigua and Barbuda’s Sports and Information Minister, chaired yesterday’s meeting in the absence of Bird. He also outlined the WICB’s plans for West Indies cricket in the short, medium and long term.Dehring presented a detailed background on the WICB’s approach, preparations and development plans for the 2007 World Cup. He solicited the co-operation of CARICOM in mounting an extensive marketing and promotional programme involving West Indies fans and supporters.Details of this programme will be worked out between a WICB team and the CARICOM secretariat in Georgetown.

يرى أحمد مجدي لاعب الزمالك السابق، أن فريق الأهلي سيتأهل إلى المباراة النهائية لبطولة دوري أبطال إفريقيا النسخة الحالية، مُشددًا على أن المارد الأحمر يستطيع عبور عقبة وفاق سطيف الجزائري في نصف النهائي.

وأشار أحمد مجدي إلى ضرورة الدفع بأفشة وأحمد عبد القادر من بداية مباراة الذهاب لقدرتهم على السيطرة على الكرة، وخلق الفرص للفريق.

وانتقل لاعب الزمالك السابق للحديث عن تعيين إيهاب جلال مديرًا فنيًا لمنتخب مصر، قائلا: “إيهاب جلال مدرب يطور من نفسه بشكل كبير واستحق فرصة تولي تدريب منتخب مصر بعد الاستقرار على مدرب مصري لتولي المهمة، رغم إنني كنت أفضل التعاقد مع مدرب أجنبي لقدرته على التعامل مع الضغوط”.

وواصل: “إيهاب جلال يحتاج إلى الجمع بين الأداء والنتيجة مع المنتخب في أول مباريتين بتصفيات كأس الأمم الإفريقية على الأقل، من أجل كسب الدعم الجماهيري، وتحقيق حالة من الالتفاف حوله”.

وشدد: “كان لابد أن يُعلن اتحاد الكرة عن سبب التعاقد مع إيهاب جلال، والتأكيد على إيمانهم بقدراته في استعادة الشخصية الهجومية للمنتخب الوطني، من أجل منحه الثقة، وتهدئه الأغلبية من الرافضين لتوليه المهمة”.

واختتم: “الأزمة الوحيدة في تعيين إيهاب جلال مديرًا فنيًا للمنتخب، أن أسلوب وطريقة لعبه تحتاج إلى وقت طويل وقد يصل إلى عام كامل من أجل الحصول على النتائج، لننظر إلى أليو سيسيه مدرب السنغال الذي تواجد على رأس القيادة الفنية لمدة 7 سنوات من أجل صناعة هذا الفريق”.

Na vitória de 2 a 0 sobre os gaúchos, houve arrecadação bruta de R$ 943 mil. Já no último jogo, na goleada de 4 a 0 sobre o Madureira, em Volta Redonda, com mando de campo, o Rubro-Negro arrecadou cerca de R$ 109 mil.

A esperança é que o Estádio Luso-Brasileiro, na Ilha do Governador, seja uma boa fonte de renda para o Flamengo neste ano. O clube não dá detalhes, mas tenta negociar os naming rights da arena. Além disso, ainda há grande expectativa no Rubro-Negro com o Maracanã. O estádio ainda tem futuro incerto, mas o Fla sonha em participar da gestão do Templo do Futebol.

Em boa parte do ano passado, sem ter uma “casa” para mandar seus jogos no Rio, o Flamengo rodou por diversos estados do Brasil. O Rubro-Negro atuou com frequência em Cariacica (ES), São Paulo e Brasília. Somente na reta final do Brasileiro é que o time carioca passou a jogar no Maracanã.

O presidente Eduardo Bandeira de Mello criticou a proibição da venda de mando de campo no Brasileiro.

– O Flamengo não votou a favor, tem torcida em todos os lugares. A decisão foi ruim porque inviabiliza três, quatro arenas da Copa do Mundo, que sobrevivem com jogos dos clubes de fora dos estados, principalmente o Flamengo. Fomos absolutamente contrários, mas não tem nada a fazer – lamentou o presidente do Flamengo, Eduardo Bandeira de Mello, que acrescentou:

What’s the word?

That’s according to The Athletic’s ever-reliable David Ornstein, who claims the Midlands side returned with a £30m offer after having had a £25m bid rejected the first time around.

The Gunners are said to be refusing to entertain interest in Smith Rowe’s signature and are adamant that he’s remaining at the Emirates Stadium.

Smith Rowe has two years to run on his current £20k-per-week contract but has been in talks over a long-term extension, though there has been no breakthrough so far.

Here to stay?

This latest claim from one of the most reliable sources around should  not just come as promising news but it should leave many excited too as it seems as if the 20-year-old England youth international is set to remain an Arsenal player.

The Croydon-born dynamo, who is currently valued at around £45m by CIES Football Observatory, originally joined the North London giants at the age of ten and has progressed into the first team under Mikel Arteta, who has often turned to the youngster for creativity in attack.

After successful loan spells away at RB Leipzig and Huddersfield Town, Smith Rowe provided the Gunners with four goals and seven assists across both domestic and European competitions in 2020/21, whilst he ranked first for chances created having averaged 1.4 key passes per league outing, via WhoScored.

In total, the youngster has provided 14 direct goal contributions in his 45 senior appearances, as per Transfermarkt.

The 6-foot midfielder has also displayed crucial versatility in being able to play through the middle, on the left and up top and that only helps Arteta more in terms of fitting him in as he’s able to play pretty much anywhere in the attack.

It’s clear that the Spaniard is a huge fan of Smith Rowe, describing him as “extraordinary” to Sky Sports (via the Independent) back in January this year.

The fact that the Gunners’ hierarchy are remaining firm in their stance over their talented youth product is hugely encouraging and goes to show how much faith Arteta and co have in him.

As a result, this should leave the Emirates faithful absolutely delighted as it means they should keep hold of their potential star of the future going into the new campaign.

Currently without a no.10, the midfield sensation could easily cement his name down as Arteta’s first-choice option in the near future.

An update has emerged on Algerian international winger Riyad Mahrez, regarding Manchester City’s stance on his transfer status this summer.

What’s the talk?

According to an exclusive from CaughtOffside, Manchester City are open to cashing in on Riyad Mahrez this summer as they close in on a deal for Aston Villa winger Jack Grealish. The England international is said to be set to arrive at The Etihad in an £88m deal from the Midlands club after the conclusion of the European Championships.

The report claims that City are willing to listen to offers for both Mahrez and Raheem Sterling, but will only entertain serious bids for the pair.

Pep would hate it

Txiki Begiristain must avoid making a grave error with this decision. City boss Pep Guardiola would hate it if the club sold Mahrez this summer as it would be a major blow to his attacking options, irrespective of Grealish’s potential signing, which means that the former Barcelona chief could be heading for disaster by sanctioning an exit for the Algerian in the coming months.

Guardiola has made his feelings on Mahrez clear in the past. Back in September of 2020, the Spaniard hailed the winger as an exceptional player and praised his quality and mentality after he suffered with Covid-19, highlighting how important he is to

He told Manchester City’s official website:

“Riyad is an exceptional player.”

The £120k-per-week wizard has been a reliable performer for the club since his transfer from Leicester in 2017. He has produced 39 goals and 37 assists in 142 games for City, including 11 goals and 12 assists in the 2019/20 Premier League campaign. This, along with Guardiola’s comments, highlights the immense quality he has as a forward at the top level and shows why Txiki must avoid making a mistake this summer.

Signing Grealish should not be used as an excuse to axe Mahrez. The Villa captain predominantly plays off the left for Dean Smith and has not played on the right in any game for the top-flight side in the past 12 months, whilst 30 of Mahrez’s starts for the light blues came on the right of the attack.

It would not make sense to sell the 30-year-old because of the £88m forward’s addition as City would effectively be losing a quality right-forward immediately after signing a left-forward.

The Athletic journalist Adam Crafton has dropped an update involving Leeds United and Patrick Bamford.

What’s the story?

David Ornstein had previously revealed that last summer, the 27-year-old signed a new one-year extension to his existing contract at Elland Road, with his deal now running until June 2023.

And now, Crafton has claimed via his official Twitter account that Marcelo Bielsa’s side are “closing on” an extension for Bamford, adding that discussions are progressing well over a renewal.

Leeds fans will be delighted

The striker was an absolute sensation in the Premier League last season for the Whites, banging in 17 goals and providing another eight assists in 38 games.

In fact, only Spurs talisman Harry Kane outscored the Leeds man in the top-flight in terms of the players Gareth Southgate chose for the England squad, while only the Three Lions captain, Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish provided more assists than him.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post, former Leeds midfielder David Prutton had urged Southgate to take Bamford to the EUROs, declaring: “Get him in there. He’s got no tournament baggage and he’s a great team player who is a hard worker and selfless. He’s performed under pressure at a big club and always rises to the challenge of the questions against him. He’s an all round good egg.”

The fact Bamford was in the conversation for an England spot for this summer is a real testament of just how much he has improved under Bielsa at Elland Road.

Keeping a hold of the core that Bielsa has built over the seasons at Elland Road is crucial to keeping the kind of team spirit that the Leeds boss has helped create, and Bamford has been one of the main reasons why the Whites find themselves in the Premier League again.

Given how Leeds fans were absolutely ecstatic when news emerged from Ornstein that a one-year extension was signed, the update from Crafton that talks are going well over a renewal is surely to delight fans even more.
