Everton manager update on Galtier

Many Everton fans have been left to flock to a big manager update on Christophe Galtier.

As per football journalist and transfers expert Duncan Castles, the Goodison Park faithful have been in contact with his agents over a potential move to the Merseyside club after Carlo Ancelotti left to go and manage Real Madrid.

Galtier has just come off the back of a very impressive Ligue 1 title win over the previously dominant PSG, and former sporting director at LOSC Lille, Luis Campos, has claimed that he has ‘all the qualities’ to coach in English football, and believes that he would be a good choice for the Blues as their next permanent boss.

Nonetheless, the update has certainly drawn a lot of excitement from several Toffees supporters, who see him as the ideal fit to manage them ahead of the new season.

Auckland strive to end Trophy campaign on high note

After yet another puzzling display of their Jekyll and Hyde character, the Auckland cricket team face the giddy prospect of a big win over their old enemy Canterbury when their Shell Trophy match ends at the Eden Park Outer Oval tomorrow

Don Cameron25-Feb-2001After yet another puzzling display of their Jekyll and Hyde character, the Auckland cricket team face the giddy prospect of a big win over their old enemy Canterbury when their Shell Trophy match ends at the Eden Park Outer Oval tomorrow. This is the same Auckland team who last week played like timid schoolboys as they were dismantled by Wellington in three days, after roaring through Central Districts like a pride of lions in the previous match. In this present game Auckland have played very good cricket to take a strong grip on the game, which will leave Auckland needing seven wickets or Canterbury 316 runs tomorrow for an outright result.Auckland performed most of the manoeuvres which may well result in a splendidly-fought battle today – even if Auckland start as the heavier battalion.Auckland closed their first innings at 361 for four wickets before the start of play on this morning, remembering that the first day had been lost to rain.Giving a strong display of aggressive medium-fast bowling backed by smart fielding, Auckland demolished the Canterbury first innings for 137, declined to enforce the follow-on, batted 30 overs to score 149 for six, and then left 126 overs today and tomorrow with Canterbury needing 374 runs and Auckland ten wickets. In the 26 overs this evening Canterbury lost the usual early wicket, two more at 37 and were battling on a turning pitch at 58 for three. The one incident that may have turned the match away from Canterbury came this evening when Brooke Walker, the leg spinner, dismissed Marcel McKenzie and Gary Stead with consecutive lbw decisions – the result of the batsmen being deceived by the top-spinner and removed by umpiring which during this match has not always been the batsmen’s friend.McKenzie struggled in both innings, and in the Canterbury side at the moment struggling along without their international players, Stead is the kingpin who this season has so often led his side splendidly, especially in adversity. The sight of Stead being tweaked out by Walker’s spin may have caused a Canterbury nightmare or two overnight. Walker had struggled to show Test form in recent weeks, and was scarcely noticed during the Canterbury first innings.Yet he already has two wickets for 12 runs from four overs. At the other end another former New Zetland spinner Mark Haslam has been bowling very tidily and efficiently in recent games, so the Canterbury batsmen face a turning torment tomorrow. The Canterbury first innings batting was disappointing, apart from Stead with what looked like an effortless 39 which was suddenly cut short with the umpire agreeing with Haslam’s demand for lbw.Gareth Hopkins worked very hard for his 22 as he tried to protect the bottom half of the innings, and Peter Fulton’s first major innings gave hints of better things to come – especially tomorrow which he will enter 12 not out, alongside the very patient Jarrod Englefield, who batted throughout the 26 overs for 29 runs. But there were some easy wickets for the Aucklanders, especially Tama Canning who brushed aside three immediately after lunch at the tail of the innings.Chris Drum deserved better than his three for 27 from 11 overs. A few years ago Drum looked an international bowler in the making, but somehow the New Zealand Cricket machine that is supposed to hone and develop the promising bowlers left Drum of slightly less classical style and promise afterward. Now Drum is bowling to his own beat, and he has looked especially good with the new ball, beating the bat frequently, and still able to come back strongly later in the innings.Today Chris Martin and Shane Bond of Canterbury, two very fine bowlers, gave a brief cameo of seam bowling class and speed at the top of the Auckland second innings before Richard King righted the ship with a belligerent 70.Yet Drum lost nothing in comparison with Martin, and may offer a little more variety than Bond. There was one final frill on today’s play for Auckland. Kyle Mills, their astonishing bowler turned batsman, scored nine not out, and thus lifted his Trophy tally to 606 runs from six completed innings – and achieved the feat of having a batting average of precisely 101.

Glamorgan bat again after Warren and Penberthy fight back for Northants

Northamptonshire’s sixth-wicket pair, Russell Warren and Tony Penberthy, retrieved a desperate-looking position against Glamorgan at Wantage Road before the weather intervened

Robin Reid22-Apr-2001Northamptonshire’s sixth-wicket pair, Russell Warren and Tony Penberthy, retrieved a desperate-looking position against Glamorgan at Wantage Road before the weather intervened.Warren (175) and Penberthy (132 not out) added 250 in 66 overs for the sixth wicket, dragging their side away from deep trouble at 127-5 on Saturday afternoon when the follow-on appeared a formality.David Ripley’s declaration on 446-7, still 102 runs behind, then kept alive hopes of an interesting finish, and the visitors closed on 66-1 – a lead of 168 with a day to go.Resuming on 181-5, Warren and Penberthy survived the morning session with the help of some costly Glamorgan fielding errors. Warren, dropped on 25 the previous evening, was put down again on 134 by wicketkeeper Adrian Shaw off Jimmy Maher, and Penberthy should have gone with 44 to his name, only for Matthew Maynard to spill a slip chance.Warren was eventually undone by Steve Watkin with the second new ball, having hit a six and 31 fours in his stay of five hours. His partnership with Penberthy set a new Northants sixth-wicket record against Glamorgan, eclipsing the 145 posted by Fred Bakewell and Ben Bellamy in 1934, and was only five runs short of the county’s best for that wicket against any opponents at Northampton. The Cornishman was still in possession when the declaration came, having struck 20 boundaries in an attractive 211-ball knock.Glamorgan then lost Alun Evans, trapped leg-before padding up to Paul Taylor, but Maher and Michael Powell were going well when rain halted play for the day 20 overs early.

Should Celtic sign Andre Ayew this summer?

If and when Ange Postecoglou is announced as the new manager of Celtic, he will have a huge job on his hands in the transfer market.

The Hoops are in danger of losing defensive stalwart Kristoffer Ajer to England or Germany while star striker Odsonne Edouard could also flee Parkhead.

He seemingly has a deal wrapped up to reunite his relationship with Brendan Rodgers at Leicester but that hasn’t been formally announced yet.

What’s the word?

Crucial to Postecoglou’s success will be finding a new striker. We know Celtic don’t have a bottomless pit of money so they will have to be shrewd in the window.

One way of being just that will be to sign players who are out of contract in the summer.

According to Ghana Soccer Net, the Bhoys are interested in securing the services of Andre Ayew, who will be available on a free transfer this summer.

The attacker is currently under contract with Swansea City but his terms in Wales expire at the end of the month.

Ayew was a target under Rodgers but now the Hoops are seemingly casting their eyes towards him again.

Edouard successor?

The Ghanaian might be the wrong side of 30 but there is no denying his fabulous ability to find the back of the net.

Edouard scored 22 goals this term and has been Celtic’s top scorer for three years in a row so if he does leave, finding a replacement is absolutely necessary.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-news-faria-postecoglou-howe-elyounoussi” title= “Read the latest Celtic news!”]

Ayew would presumably only give the Hoops a couple of years of service but despite his age, he seems to be improving.

The striker has a relentless never-say-die attitude that saw him score 17 goals last term, taking his tally in Swansea colours to 47 strikes.

The 2020/21 campaign was his best for attacking numbers, usurping the 16 occasions he beat the goalkeeper during the 2019/20 season.

With that in mind, it would appear that Ayew is getting even better as time goes on. Described as “brilliant” by Swans manager Steve Cooper, his professionalism could be incredibly beneficial for the players coming through at Lennoxtown.

Speaking earlier this year, Cooper commented: “We know he has the ability, he can be as good as anyone in the league and he can play at a higher level.

“But the fact he is showing the commitment and work-rate he is, means it is rubbing off on everybody. It is certainly motivating me to see a player so committed to what we are doing.”

For a new manager to arrive and instantly insert a player like that into his team would give everybody a lift.

His experience is fabulous and would surely be game-changing for young players like Karamoko Dembele.

Celtic are at a stage where they need to welcome younger players into the first-team but it’s impossible to ignore a player of Ayew’s talents.

In winning three aerial duels per match, he is a physical presence in attack while his 1.5 dribbles per game dictate that he can beat defenders in a technical capacity too.

The Ghana international has everything needed to succeed in the Scottish game. He’d be a very good short-term replacement if Edouard does leave, as is expected.
