Predicted Manchester City XI vs Arsenal

Manchester City take on Arsenal at the Etihad on Saturday, with Pep Guardiola’s side hoping to pick up where they left off against Norwich City last time out.

The Citizens bounced back from defeat in their opening fixture against Tottenham Hotspur to thrash the Canaries last weekend thanks to goals from Jack Grealish, Aymeric Laporte, Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez and an own goal from Grant Hanley.

They take on an Arsenal side who have suffered back-to-back 2-0 defeats against Brentford and Chelsea in the Premier League thus far, although they were more successful in midweek, winning 6-0 against a young West Brom side in the Carabao Cup.

Here’s how Football FanCast expects Guardiola to line his side up against the Gunners, with three changes from the team that started against Norwich…

Ederson unsurprisingly keeps his place in between the sticks after picking up the first of what is sure to be many clean sheets this season.

There’s one change in defence as Oleksandr Zinchenko makes his first start of the season at left-back, with Joao Cancelo dropping to the bench, as Kyle Walker keeps his place on the right.

There are two changes in midfield as Fernandinho comes in for Rodri in defensive-midfield, whilst Kevin De Bruyne makes his first start of the 2021/22 campaign alongside the Brazilian and Ilkay Gundogan, with Bernardo Silva dropping out.

The Portugal international, who was described as “incredible” by Guardiola last season, is reportedly keen on a move away from the Etihad and has been linked with AC Milan, so it would be a surprise to see him start.

After impressive performances as the weekend, Gabriel Jesus and Jack Grealish start on the wings supporting Ferran Torres up front, and the Spaniard will no doubt be keen to impress in that role given that he could soon be usurped by Cristiano Ronaldo.

Liverpool fans excited by Jurgen Klopp hint

A number of Liverpool supporters believe Jurgen Klopp has hinted at staying at Anfield beyond 2024, following an interview regarding his future.

The German has done an incredible job in charge of the Reds, overseeing one of the greatest periods in the club’s history.

Klopp is undoubtedly one of the best managers in world football, so the hope is that he remains at Anfield for as long as possible.

His current contract expires at the end of the 2023/24 season, and while he could choose to leave at that point, he has hinted in an interview with RTL [via Anfield Edition on Twitter] that he will take a break “whenever it will be”:

Shane Watson will keep the pressure on the struggling Andrew Symonds after being recalled to Australia’s squad for next week’s first Test against South Africa. Watson was dropped following the opening match against New Zealand after batting at No. 7 and bowling first or second change, and he could be used in a similar role at the WACA.However, if Symonds falters Watson might soon be pushed up a spot to the position he filled during the India series. Symonds scored 46 in three innings in his comeback from his fishing suspension, but he was also involved in a hotel incident during the series that increased the scrutiny on his performances. Both Queenslanders are handy contributors with bat and ball, but Watson improved his credentials last week with seven wickets and 81 on the same day for Queensland. The offspinner Jason Krejza has been chosen in the hope his injured ankle will allow him to play his first Test in Australia following his 12 wickets on debut in Nagpur last month. Peter Siddle, the fast bowler who was part of the squad for Adelaide, was cut while Nathan Hauritz made way for Krejza.”[Jason’s] been picked subject to fitness but all reports suggest he’ll be fit and will resume cricket for Tasmania this week,” the selection chairman Andrew Hilditch said. “Jason richly deserves to be back in the Test squad.” The selectors are determined to pick a spinner for Perth but it will depend on Krejza’s recovery.Hilditch said the team would have to be at its best to beat South Africa – the first Test starts on December 17 – and he was happy with the way the players fought back from the 2-0 defeat in India. “One of the most pleasing parts of the New Zealand series was the good form of Brett Lee, whose bowling improved as the series went on,” Hilditch said. “We expect him to be back to his very best against South Africa.”The wicketkeeper Brad Haddin also confirmed his future with an entertaining century in Adelaide while Mitchell Johnson enjoyed his return to the more lively home wickets. “Brad’s emerged from that period of scrutiny well, his keeping improves with each Test and his batting blossomed in Adelaide as we would’ve expected with someone with such a good domestic record,” he said.”Mitchell had an outstanding tour of India and his progress continued against New Zealand. He’s presenting himself as a very exciting, wicket-taking package for Australia.”Australia squad Matthew Hayden, Simon Katich, Ricky Ponting (capt), Michael Hussey, Michael Clarke, Andrew Symonds, Shane Watson, Brad Haddin (wk), Brett Lee, Jason Krejza, Mitchell Johnson, Stuart Clark.

ECB rejects pink balls for 2009 domestic games

The ECB has rejected the MCC’s proposal to use high visibility pink balls in domestic limited-overs games in 2009. The MCC had suggested using pink balls as an alternative for white ones, which often get discoloured and can be difficult to spot in day-night matches. The MCC believes pink balls will be easier to spot for players and spectators, and have been conducting trials, most recently in the national club Twenty20 finals under lights at Cardiff two weeks ago. “We thought the pink balls worked”, the MCC’s head of cricket John Stephenson told the , “but the view of the ECB cricket committee was that they were little better than the white balls we use at the moment.”The decision was that pink balls didn’t add anything visually although they were something different.” The ECB, meanwhile, is considering experimenting with fluorescent yellow balls, similar to the colour used on tennis balls, in non-county games next season. However, the MCC are hopeful their proposal to use pink balls will be received favourably by other parties. “The IPL are quite interested in using pink balls and I am waiting to hear back from them”, Stephenson said. “I have also been in contact with Clare Connor, the ECB’s head of women’s cricket, and the ICC about the possibility of using pink balls in the women’s World Cup next year, so that’s another possibility.”We will continue to use pink balls because we believe that they retain their colour longer than white balls,” he said. “If we are going to play day-night Test cricket in the future then we are going to have to find a solution.”

Centuries from Nick Jewell and Brad Hodge put Victoria in a powerful position on the first day of their match against South Australia in Adelaide. They put on 190 runs for the second wicket as Victoria went to stumps at 2 for 352 with Hodge unbeaten on 100 and David Hussey on 8. It proved to be a luckless day for the home side, which had gone into the game looking to overturn the one-day loss to Victoria on Sunday.Chris Rogers, playing his initial first-class match for Victoria having moved from Western Australia, combined with Jewell for a strong 139-run opening stand after the stand-in captain Hussey chose to bat. The pair began confidently on a lifeless pitch and Jewell in particular was harsh on the South Australia attack, which featured Shaun Tait in his first taste of first-class cricket in nine months.Jewell, who likes to joke about having only a couple of shots in his repertoire, showed more aggressive instincts than usual and struck 28 fours in his 164. His most recent previous innings for Victoria was 99 in last season’s Pura Cup final and this time he reached triple-figures with a quick single following a lofted drive over mid-on that took him to 99.Rogers continued to justify Victoria’s investment in him after he opened the season with 60 in Sunday’s one-day game. He fell on 63 when he edged behind off Paul Rofe, having already survived a chance that was put down by Tom Plant at slip. The removal of Rogers was one of the few bright spots for South Australia, who then had to deal with Hodge. He took 14 balls to get off the mark but was hardly troubled by any of the bowlers. He provided the perfect foil for Jewell as Victoria looked to be heading towards a mammoth first-innings score. The only other celebration for the Redbacks came when Rofe bowled Jewell in the 81st over with the score on 329.Mark Cleary was unlucky not to have Hussey for a duck just before stumps after an edge flew between the wicketkeeper and first slip. Hodge brought up his century in the penultimate over of the day with a casual flick through midwicket on a day which clearly belonged to the visitors.

Warriors secure lead despite Lambert's five

Grant Lambert’s first five-wicket haul in first-class cricket was not enough to stop Western Australia securing a handy first-innings lead of 88

Cricinfo staff11-Oct-2008
ScorecardGrant Lambert’s first five-wicket haul in first-class cricket was not enough to stop Western Australia securing a handy first-innings lead of 88. After bowling the Warriors out for 265, New South Wales lost a couple of wickets but their batsmen fared comparatively better than they did in the first innings, ending at 2 for 62 with Greg Mail on 24 and the nightwatchman Beau Casson on 1.Resuming their overnight score of 3 for 106, the Warriors lost their captain Marcus North first thing in the morning, trapped lbw to his opposing number Dominic Thornely. Adam Voges was Lambert’s first victim of the day, edging to Daniel Smith and the side was in a spot of bother at 5 for 128.However, Trent Kelly and Theo Doropoulos added a crucial 76 to help the Warriors past the Blues’ 177 and secure first-innings points before both were dismissed within four runs of each other after crossing 200. Doropoulos fell within sight of his half-century and his 41, which included eight fours, was the highest score of the innings. Lambert then cleaned up the tail to finish with 5 for 82.It didn’t take long for the Warriors to strike, as Steve Magoffin sent back Phillip Hughes for a duck in the first over. Peter Forrest and Mail showed a lot of patience in constructing a half-century stand for the second wicket and the Warriors had to wait until the 30th over for their second breakthrough, when Forrest edged one to Luke Ronchi off North.
