Lampard dealt with Everton injury setback

Everton will travel to St James’ Park for their first Premier League clash after the winter break and their first league game since Frank Lampard was appointed as the manager last month.

However, the ex-Chelsea boss has been given a double injury setback to his tenure already.

What’s the word?

Lampard took to his pre-match press conference to give an update on both Abdoulaye Doucoure and Ben Godfrey, both of whom have been regular starting players in the Everton side this season.

The Toffees manager told the press:

“Ben came back from his scan this morning and will be a 4-5 week injury, we hope without any issues.”

“Doucoure is still 3-4 weeks.”

In late January, Everton confirmed in a statement that Doucoure would be out for a minimum of four weeks, and almost two weeks on, if Lampard’s comments are accurate, the midfielder’s timeframe of being side-lined hasn’t reduced, whilst the loss of Godfrey over the next five weeks weakens the squad further.

Frank will be fuming

The game itself is critical for Everton’s season, and a win could be the start of a turning point for the side who currently sit just four points off the relegation zone, so Lampard will be hoping he can emulate the successful team performance he led his new side to in the FA Cup last weekend, with the side winning 4-1 comfortably against Brentford.

The ongoing injuries in the squad will leave the manager fuming, as he navigates through a challenging time for the Toffees in the league with many congested fixtures, including an important FA Cup game against Boreham Wood in that time.

Lampard would surely be wanting as much availability in his team so that he has the opportunity to really get to know the players, their strengths and who will fit into his philosophy moving forward at the club.

Thus, injuries to first-team players has come at a vulnerable time for the squad and will surely have an impact on the new manager’s selections and plans in the remaining months of the season.

Everton made five signings in the January transfer window so the new manager will be hoping that his new acquisitions can come in quickly to make an impact on the team ahead of his task of pulling the side back into safety this season.

David Smith resigns as Leicestershire CEO

David Smith has left his position as chief executive of Leicestershire and looks set to take legal action against the club

George Dobell28-Jun-2010David Smith has left his position as chief executive of Leicestershire and looks set to take legal action against the club.Smith resigned after a disagreement with Leicestershire’s chairman, Neil Davidson, and has been placed on ‘gardening leave’ until the end of the season. Mike Siddall has assumed the role of acting chief executive until a permanent replacement can be made.”We had a situation where the chairman was interfering in the selection of the side,” Smith told CricInfo. “I will be looking to pursue a claim of constructive dismissal against the club.”Smith, who played for Warwickshire before enjoying a successful career in the the leisure industry, has been Leicestershire’s chief executive for two-and-a-half years. During that period the club has weaned itself off a reliance on Kolpak registrations, returned to modest profitability and, last winter, contributed three players for the England Under-19 squad. No county produced more.Until now, Smith has chaired the Leicestershire selection panel. In that role he has worked with the county coach, Tim Boon, and the captain, Matthew Hoggard.

Leeds enter Armando Broja battle

Leeds United are the latest side to be linked with a move for Armando Broja…

What’s the word?

That’s according to TEAMtalk, who claim that as many as three new Premier League sides are eyeing up a move for the Chelsea striker this summer after an impressive campaign so far on loan to Southampton.

Alongside the Whites, Everton and Wolves have entered the race.

It remains to be seen what sort of fee the 20-year-old gem would command with CIES Football Observatory currently valuing him at €40m (£34m), and then there is the matter of whether or not the Blues will want to sell, even though he’s well down the pecking order behind the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner.

Much-needed addition

Whilst this wouldn’t be a signing for the January transfer window, it is one that the Yorkshiremen desperately need to make heading into next season.

As we’ve seen throughout the year, manager Marcelo Bielsa has suffered from numerous injury problems which have affected key areas, like in attack.

For instance, he has been without Patrick Bamford and his goals for much of the season. The England international has missed 17 of their last 18 league games with three different issues. He has no backup, leaving the Argentine head coach rather short.

United should be safe from relegation but they cannot afford to go into next year with just one senior striker as deploying wingers like Daniel James and Jack Harrison up front just isn’t as effective as having another centre-forward.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-lufc-transfer-rumours-gossip-bielsa-orta-radrizzani-elland-road-updates” title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

And Broja has proven that he can cut it with the best. He’ll find game time very hard to come by at Stamford Bridge, so a move to Elland Road could appeal.

As per Transfermarkt, the young Albanian international has found the net seven times across 21 appearances for the Saints in all competitions.

Speaking about his form this campaign, Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl waxed lyrical about his ability and threat in the final third.

“He’s a great threat. He didn’t have many poor games this season so today he showed again how dangerous he can be for the opponent and he’s very helpful for our game,” he told the BBC after a 4-1 win over Brentford earlier this month.

Indeed, at 6 foot 3, Broja is a bit of a target man-like presence in the penalty box and one that could very much operate in a similar role to Bamford at Leeds.

According to football scout Jacek Kulig his strengths are “finishing, instinct, power, athleticism, and heading,” whilst he’s won 2.7 aerial duels and averaged 1.1 dribbles per game, via WhoScored.

Bielsa  – or whoever is in charge next season – badly needs another striker at the club and on the above evidence, Broja seems like an ideal candidate to target, should he be available.

Stevens helps scrapping Kent avoid follow-on

Lancashire’s hopes of winning their opening three Championship games for thefirst time in 15 years remain very much intact despite the efforts of DarrenStevens whose unbeaten century frustrated Glen Chapple’s bowlers on the secondday of their Champions

ScorecardLancashire’s hopes of winning their opening three Championship games for thefirst time in 15 years remain very much intact despite the efforts of DarrenStevens whose unbeaten century frustrated Glen Chapple’s bowlers on the secondday of their Championship match against Kent at Old Trafford.Replying to the home side’s first-innings total of 320, Rob Key’s batsmen hadstruggled to 97 for 7 before Stevens’ 92-run eighth-wicket partnership withMatt Coles changed the contest.Stevens had made 101 not out by the time Kent were bowled out for 213.Lancashire added 68 to their first-innings lead of 107 before bad light and rainended play 15 overs early, but they had lost Tom Smith, for his sixth successivesingle figure Championship score, Paul Horton and Stephen Moore in the process. This leaves Glen Chapple’s side with a lead of 175 with seven wickets in handand two days of this fluctuating contest still to play. However, while Lancashire’s Sajid Mahmood will look back on the day with pleasure – he claimed 5 for 55 from 18.5 overs – it was Stevens’ innings which altered the balance of the game.Mixing doughty defence with uninhibited aggression, the former Leicestershireall-rounder, who had taken four wickets in Lancashire’s first innings, clubbedtwo mighty sixes and 10 fours in his 129-ball stay at the wicket. When Makhaya Ntini was last man out – caught at leg gully off the back of thebat attempting to avoid a Mahmood bouncer – Lancashire’s lead had been reducedto a healthy advantage, but nothing like the abundance they had envisagedearlier in the day.Stevens needed his luck – Chapple dropped a steepler at deep mid-on when he was53 – but he perhaps deserved a little good fortune and his performance spikedthe guns of a home attack led by the fired-up Mahmood. Most of Kent’s top order were unable to cope with Lancashire’s purposeful andwell-directed new-ball bowling in the pre-lunch session. Only Geraint Jones survived for long, and even he came in for lunch knowing he had ridden his luck.Chapple started the rot, and also claimed his 700th first-class wicket for thecounty, when he moved one away from Key and in the next over, Joe Denly receiveda savage lifter from Mahmood which he gloved to Sutton.Martin van Jaarsveld then fell for Chapple’s three-card trick and tamely gave acatch to backward short-leg Simon Kerrigan, who had been deliberately placedthere a few balls previously. When Sam Northeast sliced Tom Smith to Ashwell Prince in the gully, Kent were53 for 4 and thoroughly in the cart. Jones’ irresponsible slash gave Mahmood his second wicket three overs after the break, Smith’s swing then accounted for James Hockley and a stunning one-handed diving catch by Steven Croft in the gully saw the end of Simon Cook. While wickets fell at the other end, Stevens had been adopting a policy ofselective aggression and he maintained this policy in company with Coles, whooffered useful support with 33, as Lancashire’s hopes of enforcing the follow-onsagged.

Journalist discusses Bielsa’s Leeds future

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa will again make a decision over his future at the end of the season, according to journalist David Anderson.

The Lowdown: Bielsa out of contract

The Argentine has been a game-changing figure at Elland Road since arriving in 2018, transforming the club’s fortunes and guiding them back into the Premier League after a 16-year absence, not to mention being hailed as a ‘genius’ by Mauricio Pochettino.

However, Bielsa has only been signing one-year deals in order to avoiding committing his long-term future to the club, so his current contract expires at the end of the season.

It remains to be seen if the 66-year-old will continue at the Yorkshire club, but Anderson has been discussing the matter.

The Latest: Journalist expects Bielsa wait

Speaking to GiveMeSport, the journalist claimed that Bielsa will again wait until the summer to make a decision, having been in contact with people at Leeds. He outlined:

“I was chatting to people at the club saying, ‘What’s your feeling?’ (about Bielsa’s future). The thing about Bielsa is they do this cycle every year where, as you know, he operates on a 12-month rolling contract.

“He gets to the end of the season, and he says, ‘I don’t want to talk about the future until we get to the end of the season,’ then he’ll decide if he wants to stay, and usually by then you know if he wants to stay on.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-32/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Will he stay on?

The current campaign has been a struggle for Bielsa, with injuries affecting Leeds’ form and poor results coming their way, such as the 1-0 defeat at home to Newcastle United on Saturday, so it remains to be seen what his decision will be come the season’s end.

He may feel that he has taken the Whites as far as he can, running out of steam slightly after a consistently upward trajectory until now and potentially losing either Kalvin Phillips or Raphinha, or both for that matter.

On the flip side, another 12-month deal could be signed, which is sure to be the preferred choice of most Leeds fans, even if 2021/22 has been far from ideal.

In other news, a journalist is unsure over Leeds’ potential move for one player. Find out who it is here.
