Roy entertains to help Surrey heal

It has been such a dreadful year for Surrey that were they to be relegated they would only attract sympathy

It has been such a dreadful year for Surrey that were they to be relegated after only one season back in the First Division of the LV= County Championship they would only attract sympathy. Yet there were signs in this truncated contest that a healing process is under way. After two and a half days lost to the weather, and no agreement on a way to salvage a positive result, there were some passages of play that lacked a little energy although others that fizzed, particularly when Jason Roy was batting. In the end, both sides benefited from the points gained – in Nottinghamshire’s case keeping Warwickshire’s lead at the top to a single point – but perhaps for Surrey the draw will be of greater significance. They could have gambled with the terms Nottinghamshire put their way but reasoned that to avoid defeat to one of the title contenders was a safer way to bolster morale than to take risks in pursuit of a win. Given their circumstances, you could not really criticise them for that.In fact, the points Surrey gained take them out of the bottom two again ahead of Worcestershire and Durham and put them only a point behind Lancashire, who have played a game more. What’s more, a brilliant 83 from Roy off only 50 balls, with five sixes, confirmed that their spirit of adventure is not dead, while a composed 79 from 20-year-old opener Rory Burns offered hope of good days ahead. It was only the third time Burns, a left-handed batsman who also keeps wicket, had faced county opposition in a first-class match. Against Lancashire at Guildford last week, he was bowled first ball by Glen Chapple but emerged here unfazed, and though he was badly dropped on 54 after completing his maiden Championship half-century, he otherwise played with a maturity beyond his years. He and his similarly youthful partner, the 21-year-old Zafar Ansari, denied Nottinghamshire a wicket for an hour and three quarters before Andy Carter took out the latter’s off stump. It was an impressive effort considering that the senior members of the Nottinghamshire attack – namely Andre Adams, Ben Phillips and Samit Patel – have more than 1,000 first-class wickets between them.Burns had his bit of luck facing Harry Gurney, the left-arm seamer, when an attempted pull went straight up in the air. It seemed an age coming down, perhaps too long for Patel, who jogged in from short midwicket but somehow left the ball slip through his hands.”I was pretty happy with the innings,” Burns said afterwards. “It was a challenge against good bowlers. They are a good quality attack, that’s why they are challenging at the top of the table. They give you a lot to think about but I tried to play at my tempo and did not feel in any trouble until I was out, really.”Adams is always asking questions but I was pleased with the way I played him and until he did me with the slower ball I was comfortable.”Roy, generously entertaining the crowd on his birthday, played at an altogether different tempo, rarely passing up an opportunity to attack. He hit five sixes, mixing wonderful timing with the bold audacity that has become his signature. The innings ended with consecutive reverse sweeps for six off Patel’s left-arm spin before, going down the pitch, he missed the next ball and was stumped. The match ended after Stuart Meaker had added a lusty 29 to the five-wicket haul he had completed earlier, giving Surrey a second batting point. Four wickets for Adams, beginning with the slow yorker that foxed Burns, raised his tally for the season to 50 and gave Nottinghamshire their second bowling point.Earlier in the day, the unfinished partnership between Chris Read and Adam Voges grew to 145 before Voges was leg before to a nip-backer from Jon Lewis. Read looked set for his 22nd career century until he was bowled by a full, quick delivery from Meaker, by which time a stand of 75 with Ben Phillips (47) had claimed a third batting point.Read handed the wicketkeeping gloves to Riki Wessels for the last hour after taking a blow on his left index finger but the injury is not serious.

LUCÃO, ARTILHEIRO DO VERDÃO…

-Intuição, percepção e capacidade criativa do atleta. O técnico dá a mecânica. A capacidade intuitiva.

Assim, o camisa 10 iniciou tratamento imediato no Ninho do Urubu.

Iniciou tratamento.”

IPCC will not investigate Maynard death

The IPCC has handed responsibility for investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Tom Maynard back to the Metropolitan police

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Jun-2012The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has confirmed that it has handed responsibility for investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Tom Maynard back to the Metropolitan police. The matter had been passed on to the IPCC has a matter of course, after Maynard was found dead on tube tracks near Wimbledon Park station on Monday, having been pulled over by police while driving in the early hours of the morning. Maynard, the 23-year-old Surrey batsman, subsequently abandoned his car and fled the scene. However, the police regulator will not investigate the case further, as Maynard eluded the chasing officers before his body was discovered almost an hour later.”The IPCC has assessed the referral from the Metropolitan Police Service regarding the death of a 23-year-old man,” an IPCC statement said. “The police evidence is that at 4.13am officers saw a car being driven erratically which they followed.”The driver then decamped and after a short chase on foot, officers lost sight of him and had no further contact. The man appears to have been hit by a train at 5.04am. In the circumstances the IPCC has referred this matter back to the MPS. British Transport Police will prepare a file for the coroner.”Maynard’s death was marked by a minute’s silence at The Oval, his home ground, before the start of the second ODI between England and West Indies. Tom, the son of former England and Glamorgan batsman Matthew Maynard, has been the subject of tributes and messages from former players and members of the cricketing community and his family issued a statement on Tuesday, expressing their thanks and asking for privacy. The statement, issued through the British Transport Police (BTP), said: “The Maynard family would like to thank everyone for the many messages of support following Tom’s tragic death in London yesterday morning.”As you can appreciate, the news has come as a devastating blow and although the family is grateful for all the kind messages of sympathy, we would ask that we can be left to grieve in private at this very difficult and sad time for us.”

Notts close in despite Anderson haul

Lancashire lost five second-innings wickets for 39 in pursuit of their target of 328 as Nottinghamshire closed in on victory

Jon Culley at Old Trafford04-May-2012

Having taken 77 years to add a ninth County Championship to the eight they had won outright up to 1934, Lancashire are in danger of seeing their hard-earned spoils slip through their grasp even before summer is ushered in.With a vicious wind howling around the pillars of the half-built stands at the relocated Statham End, the fielders retreated to the shelter of the temporary dressing rooms amid fading light with Lancashire almost certainly facing a third defeat in four matches.Chasing a target of 328 to win, secured when James Anderson took his fourth and fifth wickets with consecutive balls, Lancashire slumped to 38 for 5, to which they had added one more run when the umpires, Rob Bailey and Steve Gale, decided it was too grim to continue. It was a judgement on the hue of the sky above but it might have been about the state of Lancashire’s cricket. They have endured a wretched match, one way or another, from the injury to Tom Smith and the afflictions of Anderson, interspersed with some untimely dropped catches and bedevilled by an opposing team whose application and skill levels have largely outstripped theirs.Anderson, in the event, set them a good example, defying the lingering symptoms of the cold virus that laid him low on Thursday with a performance that was decent enough, in the circumstances, to suggest that England, for whom selector James Whitaker was in attendance, will conclude that this one match is enough for him to be ready for the Test series against the West Indies. He had looked ready on Wednesday, in truth, when the 17 overs he bowled either side of a trip to hospital with a damaged thumb deserved better than a wicketless analysis. As so often is the way, he bowled less well with greater success in Nottinghamshire’s second innings, even if the figures suggest the opposite. Not that there was any surprise in that. Having felt so ill on Thursday that he could bowl only one over he was hardly likely to be feeling at his best – only “70 per cent”, in his words, and craving sleep and tomato soup. He thanked Mick Newell and Chris Read in the Nottinghamshire hierarchy for allowing him to bowl on the third morning, after it had emerged that the umpires had been wrong to tell him on Thursday that his requirement to field for as long a time period as he had been off the field would be cancelled at the start of a new day.Newell, Nottinghamshire’s director of cricket, said it had been “the right thing to do” even though he could have insisted that the letter of the law be applied.”It was only fair because he had made the effort to get on the field on Thursday afternoon, thinking that he needed to be out there for an hour and a half so he could bowl first thing today,” Newell said. “It wasn’t his fault that the umpires told him he could go off again. It was an honest mistake and we thought that letting him bowl was the right thing to do.”The deliveries he produced to dismiss Michael Lumb and Chris Read, which denied Nottinghamshire an even stronger position, might have given them cause to regret their generosity. Anderson had his revenge, too, on Graeme Swann, after his first-ball dismissal to the England off-spinner. But these were rare moments of encouragement for Lancashire. They dropped catches at important moments, or rather Paul Horton did, at first slip, when he put down Read on 29 off Glen Chapple and James Taylor on 38 off Anderson. It would be unfair to blame one player, though. In reality, they were denied by the application shown by Read, Michael Lumb and the Nottinghamshire middle order in general on a pitch that rewarded hard graft, significantly against the second new ball, which they not only survived for an hour after lunch until Taylor was caught behind off Simon Kerrigan, but added 70 runs in doing so in a partnership for the fifth wicket worth a critical 100 runs.Lancashire looked powerless to change the way the match was drifting away from them and you wondered whether Andre Adams, whose magical bowling has brought him nine wickets in the match so far, had a point the other day when, intriguingly, he suggested, mindful of Nottinghamshire’s failure to follow up on their 2010 Championship-winning season, that to defend a title “you have to know how you won it”.Adams, who finished with 7 for 32 in the first innings, took two more on Friday, bowling Stephen Moore, defending on the front foot, with an inswinger preceded by two outswingers, before having Steven Croft caught behind with another that went away.It followed a significantly improved opening spell from Stuart Broad, another in pre-Test warm-up mode, who went for 60 runs from 14 wicketless overs in the first innings but struck with his second ball to have the unfortunate Horton caught at second slip and then pinned Karl Brown in the crease. Swann, the third of the Test regulars on duty, claimed the key wicket of Ashwell Prince for the second time in the match.

Viljoen, bowlers star for Namibia in low-scorer

A patient unbeaten by Christi Viljoen took Namibia to a modest 154, but it proved enough in the end as the bowlers combined to shut Canada out in a low-scorer at the Wanderers Cricket Ground

A patient unbeaten by Christi Viljoen took Namibia to a modest 154, but it proved enough in the end as the bowlers combined to shut Canada out in a low-scorer at the Wanderers Cricket Ground. Sarel Burger and Craig Williams took three wickets apiece and led a combined bowling performance to bowl out Canada for 133.It was a game dominated by the bowlers. Canada’s Rizwan Cheema ran through the batting order to take 6 for 34. Namibia’s Burger and Ian Opperman added 52 for the second wicket but that turned out to be the highest stand of the innings as the middle order collapsed to Cheema. Viljoen’s unbeaten 50 included four fours and came off 88 balls. Cheema recorded his career-best figures to bowl out the hosts within 46 overs.Canada got off to a rocky start in their chase, losing four wickets for 33. Jimmy Hansra and Tyson Gordon put Canada’s chase on track with a stand of 60 for the fifth wicket. But Viljoen broke the stand when he had Hansra caught for 34. A double-strike by Bernard Scholtz, the left-arm spinner, left the visitors in deeper trouble at 98 for 7. Gordon and Rustam Bhatti gave Canada hope with a stand of 33, but Burger’s three-wicket burst gave Namibia the match.
