Preview of the match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings XI Punjab in Hyderabad

Big PictureThis is not Indian Premier League. This is Indian Pirates League. At least with these two teams. On back-to-back days leading into this match, these two teams have pulled off matches they had hardly any right winning.Kings XI Punjab came back from 99 for 7, and then from a point where the opposition needed 47 from seven overs with eight wickets in hand. Kings XI might want to lay claims to being respectable escape artists, but they are up against the Emperors of Escape. Apart from winning a Super Over against the might of Chris Gayle, Sunrisers Hyderabad have defended two sub-130 totals already, and are placed joint-second on the points table. The second of those defences came after Pune Warriors had reached 101 for 4 chasing 120.These are also two teams led by legendary wicketkeeper-batsmen. One of them, Kumar Sangakkara, had had enough of his struggles with the bat, and sat himself out of the Sunrisers’ last match. Quinton de Kock, Sangakkara’s replacement, managed only two runs, but he will consider it harsh if he is dropped after just one showing.Quite similarly to Sangakkara, Adam Gilchrist has managed just 31 runs in four innings, but he has been exceptional behind the stumps. Struggling overseas captains have been a matter of debate in this first quarter of the competition, especially with the crucial spot they block should they not perform, and Gilchrist will surely be under pressure to consider and keep his place.Players to watchThis match will feature two of the best legspinners in India, Amit Mishra and Piyush Chawla. Mishra has right to feel aggrieved with Chawla often being preferred to him by the selectors. With superb performances in the season so far, including the match-winning hat-trick in the last match, Mishra is proving yet another point to the selectors. This will be a juicy little contest between the two leggies.Stats and Trivia Amit Mishra is the only person to have taken three Twenty20 hat-tricks. With 131 wickets at an average of 18.76 and an economy rate of 6.82, Mishra is the second-most successful legspinner in Twenty20 cricket, behind Shahid Afridi. Piyush Chawla is the only other legspinner to have taken 100 wickets – 103 at an average of 26.97 going at 7.44 to an over.Quotes”You take the confidence because they’re the champions and to beat the best side of last year is important. But it’s a long tournament, so you don’t dwell in the past too much; you take the confidence from the wins, knowing that you’ve still got a lot of work to do. It’s always about the next match.”

Wade, Maxwell likely to miss out in Mohali

Matthew Wade’s chances of playing in the third Test in Mohali appear slim after he struggled through wicketkeeping, fielding and running drills on the eve of the match

Matthew Wade will have to sit out the Mohali Test in all likelihood, due to an ankle sprain•Associated Press

Matthew Wade’s chances of playing in the third Test in Mohali appear slim after he struggled through wicketkeeping, fielding and running drills on the eve of the match. If Wade is ruled out due to his ankle injury it will leave the Australians with only 12 men available. Brad Haddin would keep wicket and the only real decision for the selectors would be which of the three spinners – Xavier Doherty, Nathan Lyon and Glenn Maxwell – to leave on the sidelines. The indications at training were that Maxwell would be the one to miss out. At the end of Australia’s practice session, Maxwell looked downcast during a lengthy on-field chat with the coach Mickey Arthur, and he was not present at a sit-down meeting of the spinners shortly afterwards when the spin coach Steve Rixon chatted to Lyon, Doherty and Smith on the boundary edge. The small pool from which to select is a stark contrast to the first Test in Chennai, when Australia had a group of 17 players available. But the team management’s decision to make Shane Watson, James Pattinson, Mitchell Johnson and Usman Khawaja sit out for disciplinary reasons has left them with few options for the Mohali Test, starting on Thursday, which the Australians must win to have any chance of retaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.Wade sprained his right ankle while playing basketball on Saturday and scans concerned the Australian medical staff enough that Haddin was flown to India as cover. On Wednesday, Wade trained for the first time since suffering the injury. His movement was clearly hampered during wicketkeeping drills with the fielding coach, Steve Rixon, and he also struggled to move freely during outfielding work and while running between the wickets. That work was followed by a lengthy discussion between captain Michael Clarke, Rixon, selector on duty Rod Marsh, team doctor Peter Brukner and physio Alex Kountouris. Wade left the fielding session to bat in the nets but looked despondent as he made his way into the team rooms after completing his training. Earlier in the day, Clarke had raised the possibility of Wade playing as a batsman only if he was unable to keep wicket. But the more likely scenario now appears to be that Haddin will take the gloves and bat at No. 6 in his first Test since January last year. If Wade is ruled out it will mean Phillip Hughes will certainly retain his place in the side and Steven Smith will be included for his first Test since Australia’s miserable 2010-11 Ashes series. The decision to sideline Watson, Pattinson, Johnson and Khawaja could cost Australia in this match but Clarke said it provided an opportunity.”There’s no doubt that somebody’s loss is somebody else’s gain and a big part of international cricket is getting a chance,” Clarke said. “A lot of people talk about young players – he should be picked, he shouldn’t be picked, is he good enough? The only way you find out if he’s good enough is if he gets an opportunity. A few guys who are going to get a chance in this game have been waiting for this opportunity and now it is about grabbing it with both hands.”The Mohali pitch remained under a hessian cover on Wednesday but the Australians had inspected it on Tuesday and Clarke said it did not appear to be the pace-friendly kind of surface he had seen at the venue in the past.”I saw the wicket yesterday,” Clarke said. “I haven’t seen it today yet but I imagine it wouldn’t have changed much. There’s not much grass to cut off and it was quite dry yesterday so it’s probably even drier today. I think the conditions are going to be very similar to what we’ve seen in the first two Test matches.”There’s no real surprises there. I’ve played some cricket here in Mohali and generally they leave a bit of grass on the wicket and it’s nice for fast bowlers but I’m not surprised that all the grass has been cut off. That’s part of international cricket. The positive of that is at least we’ve experienced it in the first two matches.”Possible team 1 David Warner, 2 Ed Cowan, 3 Phillip Hughes, 4 Michael Clarke (capt), 5 Steven Smith, 6 Brad Haddin (wk), 7 Moises Henriques, 8 Mitchell Starc, 9 Peter Siddle, 10 Xavier Doherty, 11 Nathan Lyon.

SLC apologises for floodlight failure

Sri Lanka Cricket has apologised for the generator failures that halted play for 99 minutes in the first ODI in Hambantota, and said an investigation into the problem will be launched tomorrow

Sri Lanka Cricket has apologised for the generator failures that halted play for 99 minutes in the first ODI in Hambantota, and said an investigation into the problem will be launched tomorrow. One floodlight tower lost power after the 41st over of the Bangladesh innings, before both the towers on the western side of the ground went out during the innings break, causing the major 85-minute delay. Sri Lanka’s innings was curtailed to 41 overs as a result, and their target adjusted to 238 according to the Duckworth-Lewis method.”Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to apologize to the millions of viewers & the general public for the inconvenience caused due to this technical fault,” a release said. “Two of the four light towers at the ground had failed. It should be noted that these generators were tested the day before and were fully functional during the said testing period.”One generator provides electricity to two floodlight towers, and each of those primary generators has a back-up generator that kicks in if the first one fails. The first generator on the western side failed during the Bangladesh innings, causing the first delay, but although the backup generator took over after a short break, that too failed during the innings break. The generator that provides electricity for the southern grandstand was then brought in to provide power for the floodlights.SLC has contracted state owned power company Ceylon Electricity Board, to provide and maintain the generators required for cricket matches, but an SLC engineer is employed to oversee the electricity arrangements for each match. The investigation into the failures will be carried out by the power company. There have been several instances of floodlight failures affecting international matches, with the Twenty20 between South Africa and New Zealand in East London last year being the most recent example. This is the first time a floodlight failure has stopped play in Sri Lanka.Hambantota hosts the second ODI on Monday, and SLC said two new generators would be brought from Colombo on Sunday, to replace the faulty ones.

SA bowlers pose tough challenge to Pakistan

To beat South Africa, opposition teams need to hone in on one thing: the world No.1 side’s bowlers

To beat South Africa, opposition teams need to hone in on one thing: the world No.1 side’s bowlers.”The big battle between any team coming up against the current South African one will be between their batsmen against the South African bowlers,” Vincent Barnes, manager of the high performance centre, who was in charge of the South African Invitation side that played against the touring Pakistanis, told ESPNCricinfo. “If you can tame the bowlers, you can get close but if you can’t, you will get a hiding.”On the evidence of the tour match, which few read into, Pakistan’s batsmen have some work to do. Nasir Jamshed and Mohammad Hafeez did well in both innings but of the middle order only Misbah-ul-Haq scored a half-century.”It looked like they were just trying to occupy the crease and then some of them got good balls and got out,” Barnes said. “We can’t judge too much on that. Guys like Azhar Ali and Younis Khan have scored big runs in the past. Jamshed looks like a guy whose natural game is to play his shots and Hafeez is a quality player who scores both sides of the wicket.”While the batsmen will be the ones under scrutiny, some may see the real contest as a battle between bowling attacks as Pakistan’s has a lot to offer. Barnes regards Umar Gul as their “best bowler who is very skilful” and Saeed Ajmal as the “key factor” to their chances of success. He also saw first-hand the two bowlers who will be relatively unknown quantities to South Africa – Junaid Khan and Mohammad Irfan. Left-armer Junaid swings the ball both ways while Irfan, at more than two metres tall, is expected to extract steep bounce. “Junaid drifted in an out a bit. He had some good spells and some average ones,” Barnes said. “Irfan is definitely a massive presence. Bounce will be his strength but he struggled with his lengths and didn’t seem to swing the ball much.”Irfan’s Test debut is the most widely talked about point in the lead up to the series. While Jacques Kallis joked that some of the South African bowlers will go to practice on stilts, he does not actually seem too fazed about the prospect of facing him.”Morne Morkel is not too much shorter than that so we are used to facing quite a bit of bounce. It will be slightly different but nothing we haven’t seen before,” he said. “There is so much video analysis around. I suppose it takes a few balls to get used to facing them but once you’ve seen them on video, you get an idea.” Morkel, at around 1.9 metres tall, has been known to prosper on the more lively pitches on the Highveld and Irfan will hope to do the same in the Tests at Johannesburg and Centurion. But it is not bounce or swing that Hashim Amla thinks will make the difference in the series. Precision and discipline are the traits he rates highest in his home conditions. “I’ve always felt that in South African conditions, it’s usually the guys that are not necessarily quick but quite accurate who do well. Vernon is an example of that,” he said.”I think they’ve got a good bowling attack and what helps the sub-continent teams is that they usually bowl on flat tracks. So when they do come to a wicket that does assist them they have the discipline.”Local conditions are also what Kallis hopes will give South Africa’s bowlers the upperhand in the contest between the pace packs. “They’ve got some good quality batters that have been around a long time but what we have in our favour is that they are not used to our conditions. They will be tested with the short ball,” he warned. Other sub-continent teams have been told the same but Pakistan are the team that have prospered most. They will hope to continue that run.
