Roma most expensive player sales – How Serie A side made over €1 billion in outgoing transfers

But, what about Bruno Conti, one of the best players in the world in his prime, or Cafu, who made 163 appearances for Roma over six years!?

Or Alisson and Mohamed Salah, who went on to have great careers at Liverpool!?

While Roma have brought in some great players over the years, they have also sold them at a high price.

Which players form part of Roma's most expensive sales, though?

Roma top 10 most expensive player salesGetty Images10Medhi Benatia | €28 million/£25.20 million | Bayern Munich | 2014

Moroccan legend Medhi Benatia started his senior club football journey in 2005 after graduating from Marseille's academy.

After loan spells at Tours and Lorient, he joined Ligue 2 club Clermont in 2008.

In 2010, Udinese came calling, signing him for free.

Three seasons and 80 appearances later, Benatia moved to Roma in a €13.50 million move.

However, after just one season in Rome, Bayern Munich came calling, signing him for €28m.

After 29 appearances for Bayern over two seasons, he was loaned to Juventus, who made his move permanent for €16.70m in 2017.

He left Juventus in 2019 before moving to Al-Duhail in Qatar. In the summer of 2021, Benatia moved to Turkish club Fatih Karagumruk before retiring from professional football in December 2021.

After the 1998 World Cup in France, Nakata moved to Italy, signing with Perugia for €3.50 million.

In January 2000, after making 48 appearances for Perugia, AS Roma came calling, signing him for €21.69m.

Nakata played a crucial role in helping Roma win the Scudetto in his one season with the club.

His best performance for Roma came on May 6, 2001 against Juventus. After replacing Francesco Totti in the second half with Roma trailing 2-0, Nakata first scored a 30-yard thunderbolt past Edwin van der Sar before helping Roma score the equaliser with another fierce strike which was parried by the Dutch goalkeeper in the parth of Vincenzo Montella, who scored for Roma in the last minute.

The Japanese midfielder moved to Parma in the summer of 2001, for €28.40m.

Erik Lamela Roma8Erik Lamela | €30 million/£27 million | Tottenham | 2013

After spending two years as a youngster at River Plate's academy in Argentina, Erik Lamela made a move to Europe with Roma for €17 million.

In two seasons with Roma, Lamela made 62 appearances, scoring 19 goals before Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur came calling.

The Argentine winger was sold to the North London club for €30m in the summer of 2013.

After eight years with Spurs, Lamela moved to Sevilla as a free agent in July 2021.

Product of the famous Corinthians academy in Brazil, Marquinhos made a move to Serie A with Roma in 2012 on a season-long loan, making 16 appearances.

Roma chose to sign him for €5.70 million in January 2013.

After making just 10 appearances for the Italian club, he was shipped to PSG in July 2013 for €31.40m, at a massive profit.

Steyn return threatens Abbott run

The imminent return of Dale Steyn means Kyle Abbott cannot feel assured of his place in South Africa’s T20 starting XI

Firdose Moonda02-Mar-20161:00

Dale Steyn back for Australia series

After finishing as the joint-leading wicket-taker in two of South Africa’s last four T20 series, Kyle Abbott should feel assured of his place in the starting XI but the imminent return of Dale Steyn means he is not. With Steyn certain to play in at least two of the three matches against Australia to confirm his spot in the World T20 squad and space for only one other specialist seamer, Abbott could find himself carrying drinks and his progression halted.”I always feel like a bowler that needs to bowl a lot and get into rhythms. To play one game in a series is tough,” Abbott said. “To get an extended run has really built my confidence.”Abbott has played in South Africa’s last 14 T20 matches across six series but never with Steyn, who last played in the shortest format at international level in April 2014, at the previous World T20. South Africa have won three of those series and Abbott played a starring role in the victories. In Bangladesh, his four scalps led the wicket-takers’ list along with Aaron Phangiso. At home against England, Abbott’s five wickets was the most alongside Imran Tahir.Australia’s specialist keeper

While South Africa are looking to allrounders to fill their World T20 squad, Australia have gone old-school and sought a specialist in the shortest format. Peter Nevill, their Test gloveman, was chosen ahead of Matthew Wade or Cameron Bancroft and has been told he only has one job.
“I’ve been told what my role is going to be and that’s ‘catch the ball’,” Nevill said in Durban, where Australia are preparing for their three-match series against South Africa. “As a wicketkeeper, first and foremost your job is to do the work behind the stumps. I suppose we haven’t seen much of that [specialisation] to the same degree in T20. I’ve always been a believer that wicketkeeping is the most fundamental skill.”
Nevill is expected to bat at No. 8, which means that he is unlikely to be required to build an innings but may be called on for some finishing. Even in that role, he will defer to the batsmen in the side.
“We’ve got a lot of hitters in our team so while I am trying to find the boundary, I will also trying to get some of those guys on strike,” he said. “I know I have to keep well and make a contribution if needed at the bottom of the order.”

Abbott has proved himself in a range of conditions and situations, shown ability to swing the ball, threaten at the start and the death and lead an attack that typically includes Kagiso Rabada and allrounders Chris Morris and David Wiese. The problem is that Steyn is expected to do the same thing – albeit a little faster – and that would likely force Abbott out of the side.Steyn’s two-month, injury-enforced break has not dampened South Africa’s willingness to have him as their first-choice. In fact, it has only enhanced his status.”A hungry, fit, energised Dale is a massive plus for us,” Russell Domingo, South Africa’s coach, said. “He hasn’t played for a long period of time now and he has come here with a great attitude. He is desperate to play, desperate to do well. He wants to win a World Cup. He wants to be involved in all formats of the game so his energy levels are right up there.”His skills are always going to be there. It’s about making sure the hunger and the passion is there and he definitely has that at the moment.”So the focus is on giving Steyn game time because he has not had any beyond a spell in club cricket last Saturday. “He needs to play some cricket at international level because there is a big difference between club cricket and international cricket,” Domingo said. And if Steyn needs any advice for getting back into the groove, Abbott has some. “Batting has progressed from a guy just standing still to trying to hit you out of the ground to hitting you for a six over the keeper. To keep up with the speed of the game is vital,” Abbott said.Abbott explained that T20 captain Faf du Plessis has instrumental in allowing the bowlers to stay ahead of the game by helping them make decisions about what to bowl, when. “Sometimes it’s just gut feel at the top of your mark. Faf is excellent with that – understanding what a batsman is going to do and then narrowing down our options of what to bowl,” Abbott said. But Abbott admitted that it becomes increasingly difficult when things gets heated. “It’s so short and quick, this format, that it’s sometimes hard to dissect it too much.” He may not feel the same way about his selection.

Azhar Mahmood named interim Pakistan bowling coach

Azhar Mahmood has been appointed Pakistan’s bowling coach for the Asia Cup and World T20

Mushtaq out, Mahmood in as interim bowling coach

Azhar Mahmood has been appointed Pakistan’s bowling coach for the Asia Cup and World T20, and is expected to join the squad in Dhaka on Thursday evening. The former Pakistan allrounder is replacing regular bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed for these two tournaments; according to the PCB, Mushtaq is rested and is expected to resume his duties ahead of the England tour in June this year.”Mushi has been rested for two events as he was too fatigued,” Pakistan’s team manager told ESPNcricinfo. “Mahmood is a good replacement for the interim, being a T20 specialist. He will join the squad later this evening.”Mushtaq, 45, the former Pakistan legspinner, has been a part of the Pakistan coaching staff and team management since 2014. He last played for Pakistan in 2003. After ending his playing career, he transformed into a successful coach. He worked with England as a spin-bowling consultant, and when he was released in 2014 he started working with Pakistan, working with and mentoring Saeed Ajmal and Yasir Shah among others.Mahmood, 40, has been active at domestic level since his last international game in 2007. A vastly experienced allrounder, he has played 225 T20s, representing teams from Pakistan, England, India, Bangladesh, New Zealand and the West Indies. Although he has not been involved in any international coaching till date, he has featured in the minor-coaching roles in private clubs in the UAE and England.

Bayliss set to be named England coach

Trevor Bayliss is understood to have been offered the role of England coach ahead of fellow Australian Jason Gillespie

ESPNcricinfo staff25-May-2015Trevor Bayliss has been offered the role of England coach ahead of fellow Australian Jason Gillespie.Bayliss, 52, a former Sri Lanka coach who led them to the World Cup final in 2011, has also been a successful coach with New South Wales, Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash and Kolkata Knight Riders. The initial reports emerged in the UK and Australia newspapers and were later confirmed. It is believed that he was the ECB’s first choice for the role after an interview process led by Andrew Strauss.Bayliss would not fill the criteria of international playing experience, but his considerable coaching pedigree around the world has seemingly held sway. He briefly coached Australia last year during a Twenty20 series against South Africa.Alastair Cook admitted it will be good to get the appointment confirmed although was out of the loop having been focussing on the final day at Lord’s. “We are a little bit in limbo, not quite sure what’s happening behind the scenes. it broke at lunch, and kind of took us all by surprise a little bit. I’ve probably now got to go and ring Andrew and see what’s going on.”Gillespie, the current Yorkshire coach, had been the frontrunner for the job of next England coach even before Moores was sacked earlier this month following the tour of West Indies. He recently became Adelaide Strikers coach in the Big Bash although that contract had a clause allowing him to take up an international role if it was offered.Trevor Bayliss during his time with the Sri Lankan team•AFPHe confirmed that he had informed that the ECB had an alternative preferred candidate. “I’ve spoken to Andrew Strauss and I’m not that preferred candidate, so that’s their call,” Gillespie told .”I’d hardly say I’m disappointed but I think it would have been a good job to have, no question. There’s exciting times ahead for English cricket and it would have been a great challenge, but it’s not to be. I’ve got a wonderful job with Yorkshire and the Adelaide Strikers, and I’m really looking forward to continuing that work.”Bayliss was interviewed a year ago when England searched for a replacement for Andy Flower before they eventually settled on returning to Peter Moores – an appointment that lasted barely 12 months. His appointment would see him reunited with Paul Farbrace who was his assistant with Sri Lanka.Last year, during England’s previous coach hunt, Bayliss said: “I am interested in hearing more about the job. I am happy doing the jobs I have got at the moment but when it comes to a position like that I would be silly not to find out what they have to say and finding out a bit more about it.”Brendon McCullum, the New Zealand captain, has played under Bayliss in the IPL. “It’s a bit different in the IPL because teams are made up slightly different but I really enjoyed working with Trevor, he’s a champion fella, he’s very relaxed in the background and I’m sure he’ll have a very good relationship with Alastair and Eoin.”He’s had a lot of success of all the teams he’s worked with. The majority of teams have gone on to be very good. He’s a backroom guy, you won’t see him front and centre all the time. He encourages you to play his game.”

This is a big game for both teams but, arguably, for different reasons. Newcastle, who have their sights set on qualifying for the Champions League again next season, are five points off the top four, whereas Chelsea want to establish themselves as a force in the division once more, with the Blues currently a mid-table side still searching for fluency and cohesion. A win for either side would go a long way to helping them achieve their goals.

Moeen set to replace Rashid

Moeen Ali looks set to replace Adil Rashid in the England Test squad touring the Caribbean

George Dobell at North Sound15-Apr-20151:24

‘I was in my element today’ – Jordan

Moeen Ali looks set to replace Adil Rashid in the England Test squad touring the Caribbean. He was not named in the original party after he sustained a side strain during the World Cup, but played in Worcestershire’s first Championship match of the season against Yorkshire and reported no reaction after bowling. He will be assessed by the ECB medical team in the next 24 hours and, if they give him the all-clear, he will fly out to the Caribbean and meet up with the rest of the squad in Grenada ahead of the second Test. That is likely to spell the end of Rashid’s tour, though. While the England management retain high hopes that Rashid, the 27-year-old legspinner, could go in to play an important job for the team in the future, he produced a modest performance in the second warm-up game in St Kitts and missed out on the spinner’s spot in the first Test team to James Tredwell. With no games between Tests, there is little further opportunity for him to impress. While it is possible England could go into one of the Tests with two spinners, Moeen and Tredwell – who claimed his first Test wicket in five years on the second day in Antigua – are both ahead of Rashid. The England management are therefore likely to conclude that he is better off bowling in county cricket rather than carrying drinks in the Caribbean. That will be good news for Yorkshire. Rashid is one of six Yorkshire players in the touring party and one of four not named in the current playing XI. That situation led Dickie Bird, the Yorkshire CCC president, to chide the England selectors and suggest that some of the squad players could return to county duty.”It’s good for the club that six Yorkshire players have been picked for England,” he said. “But if they are not playing, send them home. They’d be better off playing for Yorkshire.Moeen established himself as England’s first choice spinner during the Test series against India when he claimed 19 wickets; only one behind Ray Illingworth’s record for an England spinner in a home series against India. He also made a Test century against Sri Lanka and will strengthen England’s batting.England will be careful not to rush Moeen back into service, though. He only bowled 11 overs in the match against Yorkshire and, while the player is hugely enthusiastic to return to the fray, the medical team will want to ensure he can handle the heavy workload possible if he goes into a Test as England’s only spinner.England could send back several more players before the end of the tour, but not until the final Test in Barbados is under way. While Jonny Bairstow, the reserve wicketkeeper, is most unlikely to displace Jos Buttler, England will want to retain him in case Buttler suffers an injury.Equally Durham quick bowler Mark Wood, who has impressed with every opportunity he has been given, or Liam Plunkett could come into the side if one of the first choice seamers sustains an injury. Adam Lyth, the spare batsman in the squad, is also unlikely to play, but remains an option for the top order in place of Jonathan Trott.England might like to retain the fast bowlers for another reason. There is already evidence that the competition for places among England’s seamers is pushing the established bowlers to improve their performance. While he only finished with one wicket at the end of the second day in Antigua, Stuart Broad bowled with better pace than for some time – he touched 89.3 mph at one stage – and dismissed the dangerous Marlon Samuels with an excellent slower-ball leg-cutter that gripped in the pitch and took the batsman’s outside edge.

Salah the Egyptian Messi, Halilovic the Croatian Messi – all the new Messis around the world

Many players try to play like Lionel Messi but few come anywhere close – That doesn't stop pundits from comparing their stars to the icon, though!

He played over 100 La Liga games for Barca before moving on to Roma, AC Milan, Ajax and Stoke. In 2018, he revealed that the "new Messi" nickname held him back and that he rejected a chance to go to Euro 2008 with Spain because of anxiety issues.AdvertisementGettyCatalan Messi: Gerard DeulofeuAny player who comes up through the Barcelona academy is always going to be in the shadow of Messi. Gerard Deulofeu was given the nickname the "Catalan Messi" as he broke through during his teenage years. Rugby stand concern at Headingley

Yorkshire will be able to play host to day/night matches this season with the installation of floodlights but a lower-than capacity crowd may be there to watch after safety concerns were raised about the rugby stand at Headingley

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Feb-2015Yorkshire will be able to play host to day/night matches this season with the installation of floodlights but a lower-than-capacity crowd may be there to watch.Four 56-metre floodlights, complete with innovative “white rose” head frames, are being installed but the Rugby Stand may have seen its final spectators after concerns were raised over safety.Part of the stand, built in 1932, has been condemned due to corrosion and a structural engineer is due to report on the remainder of the somewhat iconic stand which doubles up to provide accommodation for spectators watching both the cricket and rugby on the opposite side.Rugby fans are unaffected by the corrosion because they use a separate entrance. If the stand was forced to be closed, Headingley’s capacity would reduce to around 14,000, around 3500 lower than present, and lost ticket sales could see the club lose around £130,000.The rugby stand was due to be developed anyway from 2017 and if the cost of repairs is too high, that side of the ground could remain empty until the renovations are completed in 2019.”If it’s going to cost over £100,000, we’re not going to spend that money and throw good money after bad,” Mark Arthur, Yorkshire chief executive, told the . “It’s a blow, but only potentially for two days of the year, which is for the one-day international and the T20 match against Lancashire, which are the only days that we really sell out.”It might be possible to just use the ground floor of the stand, the bottom tier, but when you get people in stands you get what’s known as vibration. It’s not just a question of roping an area off.”If you’ve got a lot of vibration, and suddenly a great lump of concrete comes off the front and bangs on somebody’s head…We simply wouldn’t open the stand unless it was absolutely safe to do so.”

Chigumbura quells injury fears

Zimbabwe’s newly appointed captain Elton Chigumbura has cooled fears he may find himself on the sidelines with a quad injury shortly after taking over

Firdose Moonda17-Aug-2014Zimbabwe’s newly appointed captain Elton Chigumbura has cooled fears he may find himself on the sidelines with a quad injury shortly after taking over. Chigumbura hurt his quad in the first match of his second stint as captain, and battled through most of his 89 minutes at the crease.”I injured my quad but I think I will be fine,” Chigumbura said. “I just pulled it. I think I will be fine for the next game.” Chigumbura showed discomfort after facing 17 balls and asked for on-field treatment. He limped significantly on his left leg thereafter but confirmed the niggle had nothing to do with him not bowling in the match.Although Zimbabwe’s three seamers included two rookies in Neville Madziva and Luke Jongwe and an off-colour Shingi Masakadza, Chigumbura chose to concentrate on the nuances of captaincy instead of putting more burden on himself.”I thought the guys bowled well so there was no need for me to bowl,” he said. “In my first game as a captain there will be a lot of things on my mind so I tried to concentrate on managing the bowlers and the field settings.”Chigumbura conceded that his attack gave away “20 runs too many,” but was happy with their overall fielding effort. Zimbabwe dropped Hashim Amla on 62 but did not let any other chances go begging. What will worry Chigumbura more is that Zimbabwe did not create many chances on an unhelpful surface. With just a day’s rest between matches, Zimbabwe will look for an immediate solution in terms of being “more strict on the bowlers,” and could even bring some changes to the batting line-up.Chigumbura was unhappy with the top-order’s failing and asked his men to show more staying power at the crease. “Wickets in hand is going to be key if we want to win these games so on the batting side, we need to improve on that,” he said.Zimbabwe only need to look to South Africa for evidence of how that can work. After finding themselves only two wickets down after 80% of their innings was complete, the visitors could assert themselves with freedom in the final 10 overs.”We showed we are quite dangerous in the last 10 overs with wickets in hand,” South Africa captain AB de Villiers said. “We didn’t have Morne, Dale or Vernon – the old stalwarts so it was nice to see we can win games without them here. It was nice to see Kyle Abbott and Aaron Phangiso bowling well today. So it’s nice to see we have some depth.”Those players have likely earned themselves another match after which South Africa may try new combinations again. “The most important thing for me is to win games for South Africa. We will try and get the best XI on the field in the next match,” de Villiers said. “If we win the series, there is room to try out a few new positions but we will look at that only after the next game.”
